Time for another annual trip to the Junction City Scandinavian Festival! This year the crowds of…read morevisitors all seem in good spirits. Many people wearing various styles of lederhosen, others dressed as vikings, Oompa music fills the air along with the cooking aromas from Elephant Ears, Meat Pies, aebleskivers and brats! Ice cream and various cold drinks are also available. There are the usual array of vendors selling t-shirts, jewelry, handmade crafts, and the food! There is also plenty of entertainment to be had. There is an area for performing dancers doing traditional folk song and dance as well as a Maypole waiting to be decorated. I found a vendor for a company called 'Just Rum' who had a unique and very old recipe for the manufacture of rum. Utilizing these old recipes this company based in Sandy Oregon had come up with several award winning rums with varying alcohol levels. After a very entertaining and informative tasting session, I just had to purchase a bottle of Blackberry Rum! This is some potent stuff and seems to work best as a mixer, although there is one with a very high alcohol content made for sipping. Moving along to the Viking Village section I came across a vendor I had met last year. A leather belt maker. He does the whole process starting with a hide. Tanning the leather, cutting and tooling the designs, staining and preserving, it's just good quality craftsmanship. I purchased a belt from him and it's still in such good shape that I decided the cost was worth it to pick another style from him. He will also be at the Oktoberfest in Mt. Angel. Having secured my purchase of another belt, we escaped the heat for a bit by going into the crafts building where some of the more delicate items are on display. One of the real eye catching items is lampshades made out of wood! These shades are carved so thinly that light actually penetrates the wood casting a fantastic incandescent sepia tone of light. Time for some eats now, so we moved along and found an assortment or caramel apples with nuts, chocolate, M&Ms... you name it. We were also very happy to find some outstanding corn on the cob and some Danish Sausage Dogs with a very authentic European style casing that actually gave a crisp snap as you bite into the sausage. Thank You Junction City for another successful Scandinavian Festival. I just might come back before this four day event ends!

Beautiful setting and the live music was a perfect touch. I've been to the big ones up in Sequim and I'll tell you, I didn't miss them. No giant crowds, ample parking, and pretty by the river. Due to the price and the selection of breweries this is excellent value for your money. The popcorn was also 1 ticket and there were many food vendors to pick from. The vendor prices were reasonable too. There was a separate room for games and rolled derby. They had a large connect four, and other extra large board games . The official party weekend is scheduled now at the end of August, but before Labor Day, and is a Friday - Sunday affair. Although the festivities used to stretch farther and wider (to Good Times on the north end, and W.O.W. Hall on the west end), nowadays the partiers are confined to the heart of the downtown blocks, with three - five large-ish stages scattered throughout. Saturday morning of the fest is kicked off with my favorite Eugene event, The Celebration Parade! Here you will see so many things, rich and strange, that even the most through-and through south valley-ites have missed! The parade is capped off with the first public venture of our S.L.U.G. Queen (who was crowned some two weeks earlier at an early August pageant). The parade is free but to get "in," one must purchase a pass. These are $15 for the whole weekend, $8 for Sundays, and some unknown amount for singleton admit on the other days. The music scene is pretty tight for our little town. I've seen the Cherry Poppin' Daddies (of course), Fishbone, They Might be Giants, Blitzen Trapper, Lyrics Born, Misty River, Pinback... All with little to no crowds. The music has stayed strong over the years, but what is waning is all of the local color inside the festival gates. There used to be so many ... oddities... throughout the festival gates, and that is what I really miss. I have come to Eugene Celebration for maybe three years and I loved the little shops. The shops were a great place to by local gifts and wares. They had plenty of massage, kids, and local exhibitor booths. My friends and I decided to go to the Saturday Marketplace for a few shops, which was nice. The Saturday of the Eugene Celebration is usually busy, but it was dead. I felt bad for the other patrons. I was disappointed. The music we witnessed was okay. Beers were delish. Oakshire, Hop Valley, Ninkasi. Also, they usually have a DISCO BALL cart at night and that was not there, either. Food had some good options. My friend loved her: Cart De Frisco. An old college treat - she claims. Love the Celebration normally, but this year was a bust.

The first of about 10 informational photos says that the museum is trying to be more inclusive and aware of its history, but has all the photos of the Native Americans up a staircase you cant even access. And, it looks like most, if not all, of the photos were taken without this person's consent. It's very obvious that this section did not take any direction from a Native person, or do any research into considerations to be taken. How about mention of community efforts to reconstruct the Kalapuya dictionary? How about teaching about the agriculture they did here before colonization? How about teaching about Lane County's roles in the atrocities of residential schools? How about not putting the ONLY photos and mention of native people up in a corner you can't even access? How about showing examples of traditional dances done by Kalapuya and neighboring tribes? So f*ckin, daft, y'all. Do better. I understand that its a small museum, but you could at LEAST make the stairs available to view what you do have, even though its almost comical how obvious it is that these did not want their picture taken, or didn't know, like the blind woman standing outside her house- probably not knowing who tf was there or why. The Race for Change exhibit is phenomenal and takes up a very decent amount of space, that was awesome. The only reason I'm giving 3 stars instead of one is because of the effort put into the Race for Change exhibit, and the fiery and undeniable acknowledgments of KKK presence here in Eugene- which NEEDS to be taught about if our community wants to be a safe space.

Currently there is a hippie movement exhibit that is very well done but I believe it takes away from other important historical events. The pioneer section of the museum is definitely my favorite part. They have a number of horse-drawn wagons from various time periods. If you're in the area and want to know a little about Lane County stop by, or if you live here and don't know enough come check it out. Also it would definitely be a good place to take kids to teach them local history.

Northwest Paella Fest is the best!…read more Picture this: twenty or so groups of people in front of giant, flat pans (the paellera). These pans are bubbling, filled with saffron-laden Bomba rice. This one of vegetarian, that one has chicken, chorizo and shrimp. Next door is pork, mussels and green beans. It's kind of heady just being here. And it is great fun. There's just something about the combination of piles of delicious Spanish food, the vibe all around and everyone having a blast. It is a great experience and totally unique.

There must have been an elevator but it wasn't obvious to my eyes. I took a lot of photos of food options, because if you have a more restricted diet you might want to know what's available before you go. I did not get a shot of every menu but I got most. Or course it may vary from time to time. I was happy to see that Peek A Book Delight was there, and was able to get a cup of mango slices with seasonings like chamoy and lime. You can get peanuts for $3 and Prince Puckler's ice cream. The stadium itself just has one main screen and there were no instant replays during the game, but they did have those fun and silly fan games in between innings that were sponsored by various local businesses. The park being outside got chilly at night but the restroom was warm. There was a couch in the women's room. Note that they have a clear bag policy and if you have a prepaid ticket to park in the East Lot, the entrance is at MLK Way and Kinsrow. Google maps took me to the wrong place and I had to drive a bit to figure out where I was supposed to go as the signage was not so good.

PK Park is the home stadium of the UO Ducks baseball team, and shared with the Ems during their…read moreseason. PK Park is not very old--baseball only returned to the university as a NCAA sport about 15 years ago. Most of the donations came from a prior athletic director, whose initials for the name of the ballpark. It's small but mighty, with a total capacity of about 4,000. There are suites, a picnic area, and so on. We walked all the way to the other side of the stadium and down to ground level to the only merch booth that exists in the stadium and they had one toddler shirt. That was a bummer. I was really hoping to find at least a couple options between which to choose, and would have liked to find their Monarcas gear in something that wasn't a jersey (I'd like to wear it as an everyday shirt, and the only times I've ever worn a jersey--which I can count on one hand--was at an actual baseball game); even better if they'd had children's monarcas gear. Some of the food was ok and rather reasonably priced. We were able to get a hot dog and corn dog for about $4 each--go to one of the "regular" concession stands, not the one with fancier items, where you would see a footlong hot dog for $17. They had some nachos that looked tasty, but we skipped them this time. The favorite was the cotton candy. Even my sister remarked on how good it was, because it actually tasted like raspberry (or whatever flavor it was supposed to have), and often cotton candy doesn't really have much of a flavor. It was also only $8 and I was expecting it would be higher than that. Whew, a price break. Parking is plentiful. I think it was $2? You have to pay by card only as they don't accept cash. The line at the ticket booth was really long and it took my sister 15-20 minutes to get tickets, so probably better to buy online if you can. And if you have an "oversized bag", apparently you're required to enter through the south entrance even though there's nothing indicating that (nor what an "oversized bag" is, so check the website to see if there are actual details on it).

While it would be nice to have actual instruction, there's not enough time in 3 hours to do so! Go with the flow, wear clothes you don't care if they get some paint on, bring a beverage and a little snack, but not too much as you will be hard pressed to have a casual paint and sip party if you want your masterpiece to be finished in time! The instructors vary depending on group size, and they have an assistant sometimes if there are too many, to make sure people have enough paint (hint...there's never enough paint!).
