The volunteers are friendly and trying to be helpful but lack the knowledge or experience to make things happen with any efficiency. This was coupled with long lines. The wait to check in was 45 minutes. The wait for a locker was 10 the wait for a hose to spray off the mud was 20+. These events are expensive and it is clear that Spartan race means to squeeze every dime out of you. $15-$30 for lockers, $150 for entry, $30 for photos and the list goes on. The obstacles are fine, the only redeeming quality is the other racers who all seem to be there to get through this together. People were happy to help each other and that was cool to see.

I did the Spartan Race for the first time with a large group of friends and had a blast!…read more The Spartan Race for the Seattle area takes place in Monroe, near the high school at a spacious equestrian field in Snohomish County. It definitely was the perfect landscape for obstacles and trail running. For the most part, the event was well organized and they had plenty of volunteers throughout the entire race, to help navigate and cheer you on! Even as you arrive, you're directed to where to park and there are signs everywhere for checking in, restrooms, food and drinks, etc. The space for the race was ideal since it had everything you need for a spartan race, like trails through the woods, uneven grounds, hills and steep inclines, and yes, they even bulldozed some holes for the muddy pits that's part of the three obstacles where you get dirty. There are three different races that occur during the weekend the race takes place: Beast, a 21k with 30 obstacles, Super, a 10k with 25 courses or the Spring, a 5k with 20 obstacles. It was definitely a fun and exhilarating experience that I'll never forget! It was also cool to see how many people visited the Seattle area, just for this race that takes place every year, all over the world. Everyone was very friendly and loved the encouragement from fellow spartans and the volunteers and staff, cheering you on. I can't believe I'll say this, but yeah, I'd do it again.

I thought this would be a good experience before I try more of their runs. I thought the race event itself was well organized and all the volunteers who involved were very nice and friendly. This race started in Marymoor Park in Redmond and ended in Lake Sammamish State Park in Issaquah. And, there's shuttle (school buses) dropping participants back to Marymoor after the race. That's very nice. In addition, Gear check in from Marymoor and Gear check out from Lake Sammamish. I was able to change to dry t-shirt after the race. I really appreciated that! If you are looking forward to having your PR, this is a race for you. I would say this trail is all the way flat. My last 4 half-marathons I had time around 2 hours 10-15 mins but this time, I was able to make it under 2 hours. I was very happy with it. In fact, a lot of first time half-marathoners were very happy with their first one! Highly recommended if you are looking for your first half-marathon to run!!

This was very organized and the shirts and metals were great quality (although be warned that the shirts sizes always run small for this one). The shuttles at the end that take you back to the start were very easy to use and left often. The density of runners was great, not too crowded but enough that you could pace with people. They also had some pacers running which is always much appreciated! My only negative on this run is that darn back and forth they do in the parking lot before the finish. I admit this year was much better that the 2013 course which had a painful number of repeats but when you are at mile 12 it is torturous to be looping around. I always wonder why they don't add that mileage on at the front at Marymoor instead? Still a great race and definitely worth it!

The course has been the same each year, taking runners down Fourth Ave and then back to the Seattle Center. A family friendly fun run, The Color Run attracts participants of all ages - my favorite is actually seeing all the families out and about on the course. :) The premise of the run is simple. As participants are going through the course, they'll pass through different color stations where they are covered with either paint powder or foam/liquid. Be sure to bring a pair of sunglasses or you WILL get powder in your eyes! While we've generally had a positive time at the Color Run, my friends and I have noticed that quality has slowly started slipping. :( There weren't any (or maybe fewer?) event photographers, booths, etc. this year. The clincher was the "Self-Apply" paint station this year - I mean, really, Color Run? Fun, festive and silly, I would say that the Color Run is a great 5K though if you're just starting out or looking for a low-pressure event. Feel like you didn't get enough paint along the course? Definitely stick around for the after-run party where they pass around packets of colored powder. Happy running! :)

I had to pour water on my head because of the heat. Friendly people throughout the race. 5k was a day before and marathon next one. I was expecting a little more of a celebration afterwards though. The Expo was great. Bigger than Hot Chocolate's good old years. I found many interesting things and vendors. Take your time. It took the day before in the theater or event spot in the Seahawks Stadium. There was a line before it was opened. It was worth it.

Registration was easy but looking up your bib on line was way harder with this race than with others. Need to work on that user interface. The expo was fairly large but they didn't have vendors selling Gu, which is the brand of goo I use when running. That's the first expo I've ever been to where I can't find some! Getting to the start of the race was pretty easy. From the monorail it wasn't well marked and there weren't a lot of volunteers around directing people but by following the crowd I was able to get to my corral. Start was well organized and smooth. Once the race started, it was okay. The course is narrow in some places, only one car lane wide and that caused some bottlenecks. Additionally, some of the water stations didn't have any water or volunteers left by the time I got there (I was running slower than normal). There was not much crowd support along the course and the hills were obscene! Oh my gosh, that one short, steep hill at mile 9.5 almost killed my friend. Also, I ran the half and counted only four musical acts, one of which was a DJ. Most Rock N Roll races do better with the music. Finish line was fairly well managed, but again, not much signage or direction to family reunion area. Race day was beautiful so I can't complain too much. Other races are better organized and have more course support (and fewer hills) but I am not holding that against the Seattle race. Overall, it was pretty fun.

SHOUT IT OUT for Yelper Kris R of Quilcene, WA and Santa Cruz, CA as he constructed the offical Rhody-Run website. The folks who organize this event are amazing. They even care for sixty-five year old walkers who complete the course in just over two hours. I ought to know. That would be my category. Sunday, May 11th was a beautiful Port Townsend day. Not terribly hot, not terribly cold. And absolutely no rain. Well...maybe just a sprinkle or two. We gathered on the parade grounds of Fort Worden for this annual 7.46 mile event. Almost three thousand eager beavers of all shapes, sizes and ages headed toward the starting line as the race began. Some of us (and that would include me) started in the middle group, knowing that the world-class runners would *not* like to trip over our corpulent little bodies as they streaked out over the timing pads placed across the track. Others jogged along with strollers, a few wore casts, bandaids or splints. A couple of folks had canes. Volunteers, ambulances, park rangers and the Port Townsend police were all available to ease our journey toward the finish line. Residents along the route held out cups of water, lemonade and water hoses to sprinkle over heated runners. All were cheering. Along Cook Avenue, the crowd grew thinner and more spread out. The first runners had already finished. Young runners jogged back along the route wearing their newly acquired "winners" t-shirts. Great whoops and hollers from the crowd greeted these folk as they rejoined slower members of their familes to complete the run for a second time. One neighbor poured champagne for those enough old enough to drink, but determined enough to reach the finish line. Kinectic Kops circled up and down the lanes to urge the runners onward. For some, the goal was the t-shirt. For others, the goal was the free beer poured at the finish line by the Port Townsend Brewery. By the time I crossed the line, most everyone had already begun to party on the Fort Worden Green. But that's not the point. The point is: I finished. Next year, I'm going to beat my personal record. Should be able to do it in less than two hours. See you there.

It's all women and great for any skill level, age, ability, or size. It's empowering! It's exciting, especially because of its size! And they give great medals and shirts and other swag! BAD NEWS Danskin fills up quickly, often on the first day of registration, which is in February. If you do get in, there will be about 5500 women racing with you. It's crowded. Last year's expo (my first) was a long mess. Allow lots of time to register on the day before the race. If you don't get in, don't worry. The Trek Tri is the same route and also women-only, run by the women who used to run Danskin; it's better anyway and not as full. It's commercial--you will be innundated with advertising for Danskin everyime you turn around. And they love to promote straight, pink femininity. Sometimes it feels like women's triathlon organizers and those who market to us are trying to compensate for the fact that we're athletic by dressing us in pink flowers. Yuck. TIPS Find a good training program online or in book and follow it. When my BFF told me she was signing up for the Danskin Triathlon, I was confused. A triathlon?…read moreAren't you a smoker? And don't you need to be in awesome shape to participate in a triathlon? Answers: yup, yup, and nope. The Danskin Triathlon is open to all women, regardless of age, weight, and disability. Throughout the training process and actual triathlon, coaches are always on-site to encourage, support and cheer the participants. My BFF quit smoking and wore a patch through most of the training. Today, as I got up at 5:45 so I could make it to her start time of 7:52, I watched a triathlete swim, bike and run with nary a nicotine patch. The energy present at the triathlon was incredible. Woman after woman crossed the finish line to the sounds of cheers and excited friends and family members. Greeting her at the finish line and giving her a big congratulatory hug almost brought me to tears.

It's a little smaller than some of the halves around here (a little over a thousand people this year), but a good choice for a low-key race. So there's not really an expo and the finish line is tiny, but the course is interesting and well-marked with volunteers at all of the potential trouble spots (i.e. busy cross streets, confusing intersections, etc.). Five water stations are present along the course and there's a medical tent if you happen to blow a hammy on a hill. There's a nice amount of hills, if you're interested in that type of workout (or just masochistic). The first seven miles are run through residential areas and are a series of back-to-back hills with a nice elevation increase. From miles seven through ten, it's a steep downhill: my fastest mile was the eighth in this race. The course gets more scenic along this stretch as you head back toward Lake Washington with the Olympics in the distance (mountains, not London). The last few miles are along the waterfront with a few more hills thrown in for good measure. The timing is nice in early May since it's usually pretty nice running weather. They also have day of race registration, so if you find yourself bored on a Sunday morning.....

While all that can happen, what is inexcusable is that I used their online correction form that evening to address...which was ignored. It is now over a month later. Our pottery class was on March 29th, we came back to paint on April 12th, and then picked everything up on April 17th. It honestly felt like such a fun extended experience getting to come back and see everything through. The painting portion was super enjoyable too. They offer a variety of glazes, some classic colors included at no extra cost, plus a few specialty options for a small fee. My fiancé chose the "Safari" glaze (just $1 extra), which had these cool glass pieces that melt in the kiln and create such a unique pattern. Definitely worth trying if you want something a little different! Pickup was easy overall. My only small suggestion would be to clarify the pickup hours on the card that's handed out after painting. Google hours seem to reflect member hours, while the hours posted on the door are different. When I arrived, they technically weren't open yet (my mistake, I'm sorry!), but the person at the front desk was super kind and still helped me find my pieces, which I greatly appreciated. This is quite far from where I live in Lake Stevens so it's a bit of a drive. I met my friend in Monroe and drove from there to go pick up our pottery - making it a fun girls day! We were SO excited. Upon picking up, she got hers fine but apparently mine had a chip in it and the lady was kind enough to fix it. But, with that said I had to wait even longer to pick up since she put it back in the kiln. She took my cell number and said she would text me when it is ready for pick up. Very frustrating as we drove ALL the way out there to pick up our pieces. And now I had to make ANOTHER trip out there to pick up. A waste of gas. They need to have a better communication service for when your piece is in the kiln vs. ready for pick up. This is not a system at all and I can see it could frustrate a lot of people in the future. I hope they fix this.

The one thing I find a bit disappointing is that the classes fill up - sometimes several weeks in advance and it can be hard to get into particular classes. So far our schedule has allowed for flexibility with this but given the short time in which to use up classes, it can be challenging to find enough options that fit our schedule.

But the youngster who worked on the bike scarred the back fender, so the bike isn't mint any more, with a 1 by .5" scrape. He was very apologetic about it but geesh. The store gave me a $75 discount off the work and offered to take it to their paint shop, but I think I'll do the work. The bike is back in fine running order, but I don't think I'll be going back. There was a little girl and her dad buying a brand new Trek and although they remembered the water bottle, the salesperson did not recommend a lock. WTH?

Amped Adventure was the perfect outdoor activity for an afternoon with limited availability. We booked our ebikes a day before so they were ready to go as soon as we arrived. The process of grabbing the bike was quick and painless, letting us maximize our 2-hour time limit on wheels. This storefront is situated right next to the most gorgeous trail. Once you cross a single busy intersection, you're in serene lake territory. The team on site is helpful and will offer advice on trails, how-tos, etc. They also provide you with a lock and helmet, making it easy to explore local businesses along your route.

This was one of my favorite runs because of two reasons: it was flat and you run alongside the…read morewater nearly the whole run. What more can you ask for? The starting line and finish line are at different spots, so when you first arrive, you park at the finish line (Madison Park) and then shuttle to the starting line (it differs depending on whether you're running the 5K or 10K). It was easy to find the shuttle pickups; just look for the long line of people. Surprisingly, it didn't take long to get on the school bus. They could cram a lot of people on the buses with runners awkwardly trapped in the aisle as the bus took us away. Upon arrival, check-in had no line, so it was very easy to pick up my bib. The bathroom line was super long though with 15 porta potties and a bunch of anxious runners. The race itself started on time. I know I said this was flat, but there was one TINY incline and then one actual hill you run up around mile 5. For the most part though, super flat. There were race photos taken during the run, water stations, friendly volunteers, and festivities at the finish line. I even won a raffle prize! Overall, great race, would highly recommend.

35 years of this event and nobody has Yelped it yet?!?!?…read more I was in town for my niece's graduation from Seattle Pacific University, so I looked on the calendar for any running events that might be going on this weekend. Luckily, I was able to come across the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center Shore Run/Walk. For my family, this event was perfect. They offer a half mile kids fun run, a 5K walk for the non-runners of the family, and a 10K for those of us that are a little more competitive and enjoy a little smack talk. From the 10K perspective, this is a small race. The entire group looked to be now more than 250-300 runners - a STARK contrast from the 40,000 + from the San Diego Rock N Roll Half Marathon I ran 7 days prior. It was actually really nice to be a part of such a small and intimate run. With regard to the course, it was absolutely beautiful. The 10K begins at Ferdinand Park - be careful not to get confused with the 5K Furry Run that starts only yards away at Seaward Park (what was that all about?) - and continues along Lake Washington Blvd with beautiful vistas of the lake, through McGilvra Blvd and neighborhoods out of my tax bracket, and on to the finish at Madison Park. Beware the "hill" at about the 4.5 mile mark. Though a bit steep, its relatively short, so a little preparatory hill work should help you beyond that without too much issue. On the topic of water stations, there was one at approximately the 3 mile mark, and one more about the 5 mile mark (just a bit beyond the "hill"). The finish line at Madison Park was festive with booths and activities. The gear check was a bit difficult to find because the event is so small, there wasn't exactly a "booth", it was more like a volunteer holding bags in the back of her car. So to the gear check volunteers, and to the woman that volunteered her SUV, thank you! Thanks to all the sponsors, especially The Old Spaghetti Factory. I'm not one to dine at such establishments, but our bibs were good for a free dinner. For 8 of us, our bill came to $27 and a "congratulations" from our server - it continued to carry the intimate sentiment from the race through dinner (don't worry, we tipped her well). A chance to run a beautiful course with my family and to contribute to an amazing cause, I wish I could say I'll be back. The truth is, now that my niece has graduated and is now coming home, I'm not sure if I ever will. But what I will say is thanks to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and to the people and communities of Seattle. You have a beautiful gem of a run here and if you've never participated in it, mark your calendars for next year. Oh, and this is the first time I've ever run with my phone in hand, hence the pictures. You're welcome. ;)

This is my first time joining UW Dawg Dash. And, I am not a UW alumni. But, I thought it's nice to…read moreget the spirits going and help out UW students in their scholarship. It's meaningful. However, my friend who ran with me was a UW alumni. That's another reason to support. This isn't really a big event. But, everyone was running/walking hard. I am a dog lover. I think the best part of this run is that you can bring your dogs. Unfortunately, my boys don't really run. In addition, there were a few sponsors handing out goodies. My favorite would be the green tea chopsticks and Peak's Frozen Custard, Pumpkin flavor. When it comes to the route and course, this run isn't my favorite. Towards to the end, the course looped around campus several times. It got crowded, a bit confusing, and complicated for 10K. I think the 5K may have been a better route since it's shorter.

The Dawg Dash is a 5K and 10K run sponsored by the University of Washington to raise money for the…read morealumni association. The biggest draw for me is this is a dog friendly event. There aren't many in Seattle unfortunately even though this is a dog friendly city. My pooch, Dugan, and I have done it two years in a row. This is a fairly well organized event. This year I had to stand in line longer to get my race bib than I had last year but that tends to happen. The run starts in Husky Stadium. Before the gun goes off to start the race the Star Spangled Banner is played. You run on the track then run out of the stadium. Soon you are in the UW campus, on the Burke Gilman Trail then back into the stadium for the finish. While running through campus the alumni band is playing festive tunes to keep you motivated. The course is mostly flat with a few small inclines here and there. This is a great run for beginners. Don't worry. LIttle Bobby won't be left out. For the little guys there is a free one mile Pup run which commences once all the runners are out of the stadium. While I enjoy this run my only complaint is there are no waves. The runners, walkers, and joggers all start at the same time. Due to my frequent trips to the bathroom caused by nerves Dugan and I were stuck in the back. When the gun went off we were ready to go at full speed but were stopped in our tracks as we encountered the walkers. For at least half a mile there is no room to move. It is crowded not only with humans but with dogs. Be aware of the length of your dog's leash and you'll be just fine. I recommend the Dawg Dash highly because I can run with my dog. Also, the course is easy as pie. The alumni band is a great touch as well.

Northwest Trail Runs

I'm new to trail running, and I've participated in two of the events through Northwest Trail Runs,…read moreand both have been a lot of fun. They're low key and inexpensive, and I like how most of their events have a short distance (~5k) option that's newbie friendly. The courses were well-marked, and they do a trail briefing before the event start. One of the things I like most about the events is what happens afterwards! For the trail to grill series during the summer, there are hot dogs and watermelon, and for the one I did, there was also yummy ice cream. For the opener of the winter series, pancakes and hot chocolate or cider warmed up runners at the end. They also do a nice awards ceremony followed by a raffle of little prizes that you actually have a pretty good shot at winning if you stick around.

Having no climbing experience, I thought it was challenging but fun and totally do-able. Besides skydiving, this was my second favorite activity so far in Washington. The session kicks off with a safety overview and a practice climb up 30 feet before moving onto the next tree. Depending on the pace of your group, you could climb up to 3 trees in one session. At no point do you feel any pressure to have to climb all the way to the top. You can stop anytime and just "hang out" or descend to the ground. The guides are very helpful and patient. The equipment is checked multiple times to ensure everyone's safety. Make sure to bring some snacks, water, and a camera. You might get lucky and spot some bald eagles like we did.

City Running Tours

Thanks to Kate Reed and Seattle City Running Tours, I was able to experience multiple highlights of the city, learn amazing and interesting facts, as well as get a well paced run all in about an hour an a half. What really made this five stars was the Kate's knowledge and amazing customer service. She was more than happy to take photos at various points and was always looking out for the safety of fellow runners. Furthermore, after every interesting fact, if there was a follow up question she had the answer. This was truly the highlight of my trip and one I cannot advocate enough!

The pace is slow and leisurely but necessary since you are navigating through some heavily populated sidewalks and tourist attractions. First let me say that the Snowman Trek is an…read moreepic adventure, the people of Bhutan are amazing and with the correct local team you will have an experience of a life time. My recent trek with Mountain Madness (MM) left me deeply disappointed and compelled to share my experience to prevent others from facing similar frustrations. You will read other reviews from my fellow trekers extolling the virtues of Mountain Madness and what they say about the trek, the scenery and the local guides is absolutely correct. My warning has to do with MM and their business practices. Remember that they are a marketing aggregator, there is nothing unique about the path the trek took and that the quality of the trek itself relies soley on the local operator. In this case is was provided by ' Sacred Himalaya Travel' who were excellent. In the build up to the trek, MM consistently misrepresented the size of our group (some being told it was to be limited to 3, others 7 and the website stating 10 max (the cap that I was told), pressuring trekkers to commit under false pretenses of capped numbers and "last spot" availability, only to reveal the actual size (17 hikers) well after non-refundable payments were collected. In fact the last addition was made in September. This lack of transparency created unnecessary stress and left trekkers unable to explore alternatives. Despite paying for a premium experience, we faced the logistical chaos and safety concerns that inevitably arose from managing an oversized group with insufficient resources. The inflated group size disrupted the trek's flow, with poorly coordinated stops and unsafe gaps between hikers, leaving some without guide supervision for hours. The group was split into two camps and with only one international guide, the physical separation of the camps (up to an hour) added further risk, as the international guide would have been unable to respond quickly to emergencies. Additionally, MM failed to honor pre-trek arrangements, including private tours and accommodations, despite the extra fees paid. These decisions, seemingly driven by profit over customer satisfaction, reflect a disregard for ethical practices and trekker safety. While MM did refund a small amount for the private tour portion (we asked that they donate it to a local school), I cannot recommend MM and would actively discourage you from booking with them.

Their worldwide reputation serves them well with locals, their quality and thoughtfulness of guides, and individual service blew me away. I ALWAYS felt very taken care of, checked in on, and CHEERED on to have success in their programs. Make sure when you sign up for their classes that you are not guaranteed to complete or be successful with the trips- that is part of MOTHER NATURE. Sometimes weather is not sunny, sometimes the body fails you, or gear was left at home. Know that you will have the BEST experience either way. Before signing up, know you'll have the best time but listen to their packing list and make sure you TRAIN to have the ultimate experience.
