Once you're at the top there's so many spots to explore! Went at sunset and it was just beautiful! Lots of parking spots available and you do have to pay $5 to park here.

Limited parking but we arrived early and got one of the last spots. Environmental toilets. Large trash bin near the toilets. Trails were well marked and maintained but some of the maps were a little confusing. We did a sort of loop that mostly consisted of Cockscomb Trail with a little bit of Aerie and finished with brief section walking along the highway to get to our car faster and avoid an advanced trail. Great views of the red rocks, some cool cacti, birds and deer, and not very crowded. Also, everyone we encountered here was so polite and followed standard trail etiquette. The bikers here were great with informing us of how many were in their group. Hardly any litter which was great to see. People seem very respectful here. This trail could be rough in the summer because there is a lot of sun exposure but was perfect in January. Really glad we drove a bit farther out from VOC to do this trail.

The trail system is well marked and well kept up. We took the Blowout Canyon trail 551 to Bullseye 557 in a clockwise direction. I recommend this direction for the best view of the red rocks and valley to the north while you are hiking. There is interesting geology with red and gray tuff rock in several places and a red rimmed wall along part of the wash canyon. We saw only a couple of other hikers and two sets of mountain bikers on a Thursday in January so this is a great place to get away from crowds and enjoy the views. There was some mud on about 1/4 of the trail which would make for messy mountain biking, and a few places of the trail are narrow with a pretty good drop off into the creek canyon, so this is best for experienced mountain bikers. It is a fairly easy trail for hikers with only moderate climbs. Our hike was about 6.5 miles, but there are many options for longer or shorter walks. There is no shade so this is best enjoyed in the spring, fall or winter. To get here take Mingus Ave south of highway 89A, head about 1.5 miles south of the airport where Mingus Ave turns into FR 493. There are a few bumps and rocks on the Forrest Service road but it is easily passable in any car. The parking lot for the trailhead is on the west side and is quite large.

He shared his knowledge of the area, and pointed out plants and wildlife along the way. He knew every lookout and picture opportunity and used our camera to take some fantastic group pictures. He also airdropped us pictures he took along the way as well. Having the hiking gear provided was great as we had traveled in the night before and could not bring everything with us. We tried poles for the first time and are hooked. We stopped for a snack about midway and were pleasantly surprised. There was something for everyone! The bento box was delicious as well as the packaged snacks. We found some new favorites! At the end of the hike we were offered some cold beverages and took a few more pictures with the scenic red rocks. We learned so much about the area and also learned what is needed on long hikes. Jason was a great storyteller and made the hike so enjoyable. We would use this company again and highly recommend.
