Olinda Sweet Company is a really popular sweet shop in Sassafras. When I arrived it was full of excited children, their parents and even a few grandparents. It isn't a large shop so it was quite a squeeze moving around at times. There was one person serving but that was definitely adequate as people seemed to spend a lot of time looking then buy only one or two items. My favourite part about the shop was the pick 'n' mix section. There was a table with all sorts of lollies on it and it cost $2.90 for a 100gram selection of your choice. No wonder people were in here for ages - there was so much to choose from. I noticed the prices in this shop were a fraction higher that the other lolly shop in Sassafras but I'm talking fifty cents so it wasn't a big difference. They stocked sugary drinks like Dr. Pepper as well as big giant freckles, which was quite cool. The shop is around the corner from the main shopping strip in Sassafras and stocks all sorts of worldly treats like Dutch Licorice and English Boiled Sweets - make sure you don't miss out!

The same guys that have the Sassafras Sweet Co shop. are catering mainly for the weekend visitors to the area, the Olinda Sweet Company bring sweets from around the world to their cute little stores and make them available by the bag, perfect for opening in the car as you wind your way around the hills. Much the same as the other store, you can buy your favourites sweets of old by the pre-packaged bag, or by weight. The range of chocolate candy bars is great too, with American favourites on offer, plus some you may remember being in stores here at home that have now been discontinued. In the fridge is a range of soft drink varieties you may or may not be familiar with too, and although you'll pay a little more than usual, these aren't your usual flavours.

This discovery saved my toosh for Thanksgiving this year because USA Foods in Moorabbin screwed up my order and shorted me my canned pumpkin and I didn't realize it until the last minute. So, hooray for these guys! They made it possible for us to have traditional American pumpkin pie at our Aussie thanksgiving :) And now I have another can for Christmas, too! As for the other stuff they offer here, seemed like a bunch of junky sugary American cereals, sodas, and candies. And uniquely American things too, like graham crackers. I want to go back and peruse their sauces and stuff more closely and see if they have any Cajun stuff too, but what I saw briefly in my quick frenzied quest for canned pumpkin led me to believe it's mostly junk food here. Which is totally acceptable -- I just hope Australians don't judge us Americans based on the stuff they sell here, ha! We don't all eat like we're one snack away from diabetes, I swear. Price-wise, this place seemed comparable to or cheaper than USA Foods. It's a lot smaller, though -- really just a hole-in-the-wall. Honestly, I prefer Prahran Convenience for cheap imported foods from the U.S. and elsewhere, but this place is a bit more U.S.-focused than Prahran Convenience so if you're looking for a distinctly American product, you might want to try here first.
