One star for "cuteness", and had a clean bathroom (although the womens needed the trash emptied). There were 3 people at a table when I arrived. 4 people visibly working. Nobody acknowledged my presence. I had to ask if I can sit. Was told I can sit anywhere but order at the counter. Separate wine counter that said tastings till 4pm (its only 3) but it looked shut down. Despite looking at the menu and display for 15 minutes, nobody seemed to care. From what I gather on my own, they offer a small to moderate amount of wines from the area. Those available to taste are written on the daily board. Despite selling reds and blends, none of these were offered to sample before purchase. Not really a meal place. Menu consisted of a $32 cheese platter of 4 small wedges (2-3 bites) of cheese and a small container of chutney. If you wanted meats or crackers to eat these on, theze are purchased separatly. Small shop items available to browse, mostly sauces and marmalades. Nobody seemed to care I was there or that I left. My inbox often runneth over with announcements I couldn't care the slightest bit about. But the day I received a press release about the grand opening of a Yarra Valley chocolatier happening the same weekend as my birthday -- well, let's just say I was quite enthusiastic. And so it went, combining my (weekend) day of birth with a sugar laden trek to Yarra Valley. In spite of being their grand opening, the outside was stark with minimal signage. [I just assumed they were saving all the balloons to surprise me with for my birthday, hehe ;) ] There's one large building for visitors among the 16-acre plot. When you walk in, your senses will immediately pulsate from joy -- and the sound of dozens of sugar-high children. There are giant bowls of milk, dark, and white chocolate to taste by the spoonful. Staff members in brightly colored uniforms paraded around with trays of other specialty sweets to sample. There's a lovely cafe overlooking the grounds, and I'm told a rather large chocolate fountain coming soon. On the opposite side, you can peek into production where some of the chocolates are made, conveyer belt style. (This was real life I Love Lucy!!) YVCI's chocolate was very good. I made several Christmas purchases from their gift shop, most of which were very favorably received and followed with requests for more. Many of the products had great local additions, such as the mint truffles, which were flavored from plants right in the garden. My visions of an upscale Willy Wonka excursion weren't quite met, as YVCI left me feeling slightly dissatisfied with the experience. There was little to do here other than eat and shop, and my itch for learning about the local chocolate production was left unscratched. This is a fantastic venue for families and an absolute must on a Yarra Valley exploration, but not something I'll be begging to return to - at least not until the next Secret Santa season. If you are looking for something fun to do in the Yarra Valley besides drink wine - or in addition to drinking wine, I highly recommend stopping here. It's set in the picturesque wine country, with rolling hills and a fun grassy area for kids. There is an ice cream shop out front and inside, plus you can see how chocolate is made and sample pretty much anything they sell. It was as magical as Willy Wonka's factory, minus the whiny Veruca Salt! The staff here are all super friendly. They must be high on all the sugar and chocolate aromas, as they will happily explain ingredients, suggest items and if you were late like me for the annual ice cream festival, escort you directly to the tasting room without delay. The tasting was of all 12 flavours, that change each season. For $18 you get your money's worth. In fact, I couldn't even eat all the samples. My personal faves were the sea salt caramel and macadamia, bacon and maple syrup, and the chocolate beetroot and walnut. There were many unique flavours, even a non-dairy ice cream and a frozen yogurt. Delicious! This will now be a mandatory stop for all visitors I host. Don't delay, sugar-rush in today! :) read more

Can I say this chocolate is better than Max Brenner? I might HAVE to go back just to make sure, I don't believe in false advertising. This awesome chocolaterie is worth the drive out. As you enter you are greeted with 3 massive bowls of chocolate buttons - white, milk and dark. For free. To sample. To eat. To crave that little chocolate craving. As you move on, you get to actually see the chocolate making factory in progress and then walk through a gazillion different type of chocolate as you head to the cafe area. Not only do they have chocolate to eat, there's also chocolate soap, chocolate cream etc etc... The cafe not only sells chocolate-y stuff, but they also have lunch items. A chance meeting with one of the head cheese makers led to a visit to Yarra Valley Dairy & I have to agree with the other reviews & say that the Ashed Goats Cheese Pyramid is amazing. The dairy lets you sample a selection of the cheese they produce with no pressure to buy. The shop within the dairy sells wine, chutneys, sauces, jams etc along with tea towels and crockery amongst other things. We left with some funky tea towels and a cheese pyramid. During our visit we also enjoyed some yummy cakes and coffee whilst enjoying the view out across the Yarra Valley. It was definitely a worthwhile stop whilst exploring the Yarra Valley for the first time. read more

I knew that the Yarra Valley was famed for its incredible wines. But dairy? I hadn't a clue. That was until I visited the Yarra Valley Dairy for my very first cheese tasting and now I can't wait to go back. A shop and cafe offering tastings of the dairy's incredible marinated, fresh and mature cheeses, the Yarra Valley Dairy may be small but in my opinion it is perfectly formed and just about the best place to while away an afternoon round these parts if you're becoming a bit fatigued with all of the wine. I stopped in for a tasting and an - amazing - cup of coffee and could not recommend the Yarra Valley Dairy Cafe more highly. The Dairy's cheeses are fantastic with the 'Cardi' a fresh goats milk cheese marinated in cardamon, coriander and black pepper deserving special mention. Is it possible to get sick of chocolate? As soon as you walk in here, the chocolate marathon begins. Three deep bowls of white, milk, and dark choco buttons greets you unmanned, UNMANNED. But be warned, it's so easy to keep nibbling on these, you'd have eaten a whole kg of chocs. And you haven't even bought anything yet! This is the place for variety, any form that chocolates can take, they do them here. Ever had chocolate covered snakes? Double coated! Saw them with my own eyes while nibbling on free choc buttons. Need a break from all the winery-hopping? A stopover here is a good way to taste something other than the grape variety, though free tastings seem to be limited to a spoonful of either white, milk or dark chocolate buttons packed into large bowls by the entrance. While there is a great deal of chocolate to be bought, I opted for an ice-cream during my visit, perfect for a hot and sweaty day. There is an ice-cream kiosk both at the entrance and inside (saw a huge line outside and thought for a second that it was for entering the venue, but no it was just for ordering, so you can walk straight through if you wish). I got the sugar-free dark chocolate sorbet in a cup for $4.80, serving size was generous and while 'sugar-free' doesn't sound too appealing to the sweet tooth, it was surprisingly rich and full of chocolately flavour. If only all sugar-free food tasted this good.... Keep in mind that if you visit during a weekend, it is ridiculously hectic inside, with kids running around everywhere, so it's a cautious exercise having to avoid collisions both indoors and out. There appears to be ample seating, especially on the deck, and I would recommend sitting here as it looks out to the gorgeous orchards, rolling hills and a nearby lake on the property. Compared to the wineries, it's not as serene an experience due to the noise levels, but still a worthy pitstop on the Yarra Valley trail. read more

Yarra Valley Dairy Farm is delightful. The free cheese tastings offer you a chance to sample and try something different. If you like, you can then order a cheese platter and take a seat by the windows overlooking the farm. Each cheese plate comes with locally baked breads and you can pay for additional items such as olives, quince paste and other charcuterie delights. Our platter had four very different cheeses (two cow and two goat cheese) but I was hard pressed to pick a favourite! We ended up taking both the Persian Fetta and the Le Jack home but I would have been happy with anything I tried! Whilst you can't book in advance, there's complimentary wine tastings for groups less than 8 people. Yarra Valley Dair Farm offers wine tastings for some independent wineries that are don't offer their own cellar door experience. This is a lovely way to pass the wait for a table and to taste some wines that you most likely haven't tried before. If soemthing takes your fancy, you can order by the glass or purchase a bottle to take home. There's also a stocked shop full of regional produce, homewares and other knick-knacks that's worth a look. I'd recommend Yarra Valley Dairy Farm if you've visited one too many wineries and feel like something different. The cheeses I tasted were all impressive and the coffee hit the spot. Anyways, it gets a few stars for the cuteness factor and the fact that you can try the different cheeses. However, it kinda smelled weird (I guess cuz of the cheese and cows?) and the interior was a bit dark. Also, the deli section (and even the cheese selection) had a lot of imported products (mostly from Europe) which was disappointing. They did have some cool stuff though like gold mustard/salt/pepper/sugar if you're baller like that. Supposedly wine tastings are available but no one was manning the station. All in all, it was an interesting place and worth a look around if you like cheese and have some time to kill. Make sure you come here on a completely empty stomach! We were so sickly full by the end of this trip but it was so worth it! The place was packed on a Sunday at around 11am but we easily got a park (don't let the cars parked on the side of the road fool you, keep driving around and you'll find a heap of parks!). We wandered around for a while before standing in a long line to order dessert. It actually moved very fast and while inside was a bloodbath to find a table, outside had heaps of free space. We ordered 2 Mississippi mud pie hot chocolates (hot milk served with cream, a disk of hot chocolate, hot caramel to pour over the top to melt the chocolate and a marshmallow and brownie bite) and a warm brownie with ice cream and melted milk chocolate. It was delicious, beyond delicious! And fun so so fun! We can't wait to come back to try something new! read more

My review for the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery will involved 3 distinct words which I shall expand on, and they are chocolate, landscape and fat. The primary reason as to why I chose three distinct words is because these three words paints a beautiful picture of my experience when I visited this place. However, for the people who don't like to read and who cannot be bothered reading past this first paragraph, I shall summarise condense these three words into one highly profound adjective. Immaculate. Chocolate. There's something in chocolate that brings people together. In the case of Yarra Valley Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery (herein YVCIC), their chocolate brings a truck-load of people each and every day--no joke. And why wouldn't it? Their chocolate is probably one of the best within Melbourne, and people know that. Just by walking into the store you're greeted with a store that is FULL of chocolate, left, right and centre. There's even a glass pane to your left just after you walk in which hosts a view of the workers who is creating the chocolate you'll be buying. This not only shows you a view of the end product but also the how-it's-made from start to finish. A very clever marketing technique. Landscape. Often from visiting stores that catches my attention I end up walking in, checking in the store, checking out the store and the leaving. My attention span doesn't last very long as once you've seen it you've seen it. However, having visited YVCIC, I can say that the landscape that this place possesses is something worth staying for. It has got such a wonderful and relaxing feel that you cannot help but go in, buy some chocolate and probably a hot cup of whatever, sit outside and enjoy. It is a fantastic place to take the entire family as the landscape outside the actual store is equipped with enough equipment to entertain a small crowd, ranging from a few frisbees to a few soccer balls. It's actually something that you'll have to come and experience. These are one of those moments again that words cannot give full justice on explaining how beautiful this place is. You'll just have to come and experience it for yourself! Lastly. Yes, it's the word that people often do not like. Fat. YVCIC is a hazard for diabetics, and more so for healthier people. The amount of 'stuff' they have just waiting for human consumption is ridiculous and many things can go wrong in a person's body if they decide to consume said 'stuff'. haha. An example would be the 'bowl'--think of a bowl, okay, now enlarge that by about 20 times--that's filled with, yes you guessed it, chocolate. Now why is this significant? Well primarily because these 'bowls' are actually free. Yes. Free. You can literally walk up, grab a handful and walk around whilst eating said chocolate. Best yet, once you've finished that handful you can waddle over back to the bowls and repeat. No one will question you, no one will ask you to pay and most importantly no one will judge! haha Overall, YVCIC is the haven for chocolate lovers--hence the name. If you're a person who enjoys the company of chocolates and humans then this WILL be the place I would recommend. It is fantastic place for a nice afternoon out, whether that means catching up with a few friends, taking family members out on a trip somewhere far from the city or just wondering adventurously by yourself. I highly recommend YVCIC, and I think it's in your best interest to go experience the wonders this place has. It is probably the closest experience you'll get to Willy Wonka's Factory. read more

It's the Yarra Valley's take on Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory with chocolate goodies as far as the eye can see. There is so much choice here, it's almost overwhelming. But there are super friendly staff members walking around with free samples of their delicious wares to help make your decision easier. There is also three big bowls of white, milk & dark choc buds with spoons to help yo'self - danger!! Whilst we didn't sample either the ice cream or any meals, there is an ice cream servery at the entrance as you walk up from the carpark and also a cafe inside with lots of chocolate & dessert delights, hot & cold drinks and some savoury breakfast & lunch items too. You can also watch the chocolatiers working their chocolate magic through the big glass windows looking into the "factory kitchen". I also noticed that they offer a cute experience for the kids where they get to create their own chocolate masterpieces - a great idea for a fun school holiday activity. I bought a giant chocolate freckle and some dark chocolate coated freeze dried strawberries to take home - both of which were delicious! All in all a great spot to bring visitors as part of a day trip to the Yarra Valley in between wineries and the like. read more

Let me begin by saying I love cheese. In fact when I first typed that sentence I mistyped I live cheese which is almost true in itself. If like me you live / love cheese you must stop off here as a pit stop from your wine tour. Yarra Valley Dairy is a goats cheese dairy, so if you are a cows cheese lover only look elsewhere. They offer free tastings of mainly soft cheeses, although they also stock a small selection of hard cheeses. The selection is pretty good and they also have a cute little gift shop selling a range of things such as chutneys and jams, cheese boards and cheese knives. They also have a cafe added on, which is worth a sit down in while taking a break from your cheese tasting. So I was pretty torn what to rate this place. After all like I said I love cheese. I settled on three stars for two reasons. The first and main reason is the service; which I found has really slipped here. The girl doing the tastings had zero care factor. She clearly wanted to cycle us through as quickly as possible, never even looked us in the eye or smiled once and was bordering on; in fact no she was, rude. The second reason for three stars is the choice of cheeses in the tasting are all soft cheeses. They need more hard cheeses to try for sure. That said you should come and try this place. Hopefully they'll pick up their game the next time I go back. read more

If you are a fan of delicious, hand crafted chocolate; you'll love Yarra Valley Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery. First things first though, it's very touristy so it gets really busy during the day. We got there after lunch time and it was packed to the rafters. It was a beautiful sunny Saturday so I wouldn't have expected it to be any different anyway. Around an hour's drive from Melbourne, you owe it to yourself to visit this place. They have thousands of products on display and over 250 hand crafted creations to choose from. I bought a box of their truffles and they were absolutely amazing. I also grabbed some of their turkish delight, milk and dark chocolate and they were really nice. They also have free tastings available. Their staffs are really nice and friendly, it's very refreshing and the girl who served us was so lovely. You walk in and on the left you'll see a large glass window and behind it, are the chocolatiers at work and busy creating their masterpieces. With summer on the way, now's the time to check it out if you haven't. You won't regret it and, before I forget, make sure you try their ice cream from the cafe - it's awesome! So do it, actually make it a day out and grab some lunch at one of the wineries nearby as well. It's a nice drive and the view is beautiful. Arrgghh now I want to go back! read more

The happiest staff on earth. Seriously, these lovely, helpful and genuinely friendly ladies would be right at home at Disneyland. I am not sure if they are getting high on their own supply but with those huge bowls of "help yourself" chocolates, who wouldn't? There is every type of chocolate here that you can imagine, even the type you rub on your skin. Overseas visitors will love the Australian animal shaped chocolates but my favourites were the rocky road, freckles and soft nougat. The cafe is a bustling, dive for a table affair but if you are willing to rug up you can enjoy a more peaceful time on the covered terrace with beautiful Yarra Valley views. You need to order at the counter first and the menu is your standard fare for savoury items ranging from risotto to pizzas and a few salads. However, dessert is the main event and if you want a concentrated chocolate experience get the warm chocolate brownie and tip that shot of hot couverture all over it. Washing it down with some hot chocolate should come with a health warning but you'll do it anyway. My best advice is to make sure you have worked out before you get here so that you have some calories in the bank and then go for a very long walk afterwards so that what you remember is the deliciousness of the chocolate and not your greedy over indulgence. read more

Cheese, I love Cheese... AND COW'S So as apart of our wine tour we wanted cheese (as all wine tours should have) So we stop here to indulge ourselves in abundance of cheese. There was a free cheese tasting sessions and we are walked through all the different cheese's. They were delicious. Some great flavor and some real creamy cheese's. I highly recommend a stop over at this dairy farm if you head down the valley because cheese and wine are just like spaghetti and meatballs.. they just work. Let me start by saying this place is a chocolate lovers heaven. It's huge. Really really big! And busy. The first thing you'll notice once you've worked your way through the maze car park is all the signs saying No. Don't be put off by this just keep on going in. On arrival there are three large offerings of chocolate sample- white. Milk and dark. The warehouse sized store is separated into four areas. Cafe, ice cream, retail (inc truffle style chocolates) and the factory viewing window. If the crowds are too big inside and you want an ice cream her back outside where a small ice cream stall is. The pricing here is fairly similar to the Melbourne chocolatiers. The different being the larger range here. Price wise the cafe was a bit too expensive for what was on offer, especially considering the seemingly hundreds of wineries and cafes around. read more

Another must-stop along any path we take through the Yarra Valley, the YVDC is perfect to either break up the wine tasting (although they do that there too...) by getting a cheese plate and some crackers and sitting in, or picking up something delicious you've fallen in love with during your free tasting and enjoying that at home later with a few choice wine selections that also made their way home with you (sometimes seemingly as if by their own volition!) The selection of cheese changes slightly each time I go and the options are always delicious and exciting. Once you have sampled the substantial (yet not overwhelming) range of cheeses, you can pair it with some biscuits and take a seat at one of the tables overlooking the gorgeous Yarra Valley and paddocks. In a corner, there is a table for a a local winery to set up and offer tastings. The winery changes each week or so and the options are always tasty. This chocolaterie is a bit of a trek if you live in Melbourne but it's a must visit if you're a fan of chocolate. It's located just outside the Yarra Glen on the corner of Old Healsville Road and the Melba Highway. The venue is amazingly large and has a large assortment of chocolates to buy. We stopped to check the place out and it was packed with families with children and tourists in the area. We tried two different chocolate dessert (I can't remember them at the moment) which were delicious. The service and timing wasn't fantastic but semi-understandable given the amount of people that were at the chocolaterie. The best part is when you walk through the front door there are buckets of chocolate pieces that you can take for free! read more

First of all, I don't eat goat cheese. However, after tasting the cheese here, I'm a changed woman. The Ashed Goat Cheese Pyramid, as others have alluded to, is amazing. Tastes like blue cheese, but is goat cheese. It's mild enough that someone like me who detests goat cheese is able to like it. We also really liked the cheese that was marinated in chili oil. Set among the beautiful rolling hills of the Yarra Valley this is a great place to stop off and end enjoy the scenery and indulge in a massive sugar hit!!! Spent a lovely winters afternoon with friends hanging out at the cafe which was packed to the rafters with like minded people. With a fairly large menu to keep everyone happy, the ques to order may have been long but table service was quick. Coffee was good and the sweet treats even better! I don't have a massive sweet tooth so my favorite were the Vanilla bean scones! We also ordered the the Honeycomb sundae which was huge and was enough for our group of 5 adults and 3 kids to all enjoy. Seating both inside and outside sheltered, comfortable and heated. There's plenty of room to walk/run off the sugar high before heading out via the chocolate shop to grab a few goodies to take back home. I am a cheese lover to the max and was very excited to be at a Australian dairy, we came from America.We walked into the place at 1035 on a Tuesday morning only 5 mins after the place opened. It had about 10 people walking around few people doing a tasting. We Walked up to the counter and asked about doing a tasting. Two cheese in We were then handed off to Sarah. Who again offered little explanation, then a big group came in that appeared to not have an appointment her attention was then focused on that. I know it is a free tasting, but I have been to many free tasting and have been given great recommendations , explanations, and attention. I would not recommend going here unless you have an appointment the website states that you don't need one if you're a group of less then 6 or 8 but if you want any explanation I would make an appointment. Visited the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie on the weekend for the hot choc festival. Booked a session for hot chocolate tasting of 7 different flavours of hot chocolate ($8). First thing you'd notice even before you enter is the amazing landscape and refreshing views of greenery. Just amazing! Next thing you'd notice upon entry is the ice cream stand :) gets you a little more excited, then as you enter ....you'll notice walls filled with chocolate of all sorts - the smell of chocolate and sweetness was amazing. 3 bowls of chocolate - white, milk, dark which you can freely help yourself to. I must admit the hot chocolate tasting session was a bit of disappointment - it was a bit rushed and though the flavours sounded fantastic - it tasted more like sweetened milk rather than 'hot chocolate'. Each flavour was served in a big milk jug which was already flavoured and sweetened then it was mixed with only small spoons of chocolate and given to us to taste. I believe that had we opted to buy a hot choc at the cafe, it would be served differently and with more real chocolate added into it (you get a shot of chocolate which you can add to your hot choc). The positives would be the amazing selection if chocolates that you could buy :) and of course I bought a few varieties to take home with me, the freeze dried strawberry covered with choc was Devine! Highly recommended! As were the peanut brittle chocolate! Next time I visit I would opt to go for a classic hot chocolate or their amazing looking ice creams and desserts and enjoy that while admiring the scenery and surrounds. read more
