If you're looking for good American BBQ in Mexico City, this place gives Pinche Gringo a run for its money and ought to put Porco Rosso out of business.
I had smelled this place before I saw it while walking by it on the opposite side of the street. While I wasn't confident good smell would translate to good taste, I was curious enough to tell my co-workers about it. Three of them headed here before another group of four of us made it. When the four of us got there, the three who had just finished raved about the food and left some samplings for us to try: the mac and cheese and the banana pudding (both delicious). They all suggested we get the pulled pork sandwich, so that's what 3/4 of us opted for, and we were all glad we did. It was probably one of the best pulled pork sandwiches I've had. Ever. The fresh bun was toasted perfectly but not burnt, the pulled pork was tender and flavorful with just the right amount of BBQ sauce, but not dry. And it was topped with a few pickles, but not cole slaw, which is my preference. They do give you extra BBQ sauce out of the squeeze bottle on the table, which somehow stayed warm the entire time we were there. I'm guessing they had just made it and it was still hot by the time they poured the sauce into the bottle.
For my two sides, I got the mac and cheese and the potato salad (also good, but not mind blowing). The one person who did not get the pulled pork sandwich enjoyed the ribs, but raved even more about the baked beans and he's from the south. He thought the ribs might have been a little tough coming off the bone, but they were St. Louis style, not baby backs.
My only suggestion to management for improvement was to put wet naps on the table. The woman who cashed us out politely suggested the owners (from the States) wouldn't make such an investment since they were generally unwilling to buy things that weren't deemed necessary. Interesting considering our sandwiches were wrapped in paper. Aside from that, my co-worker didn't think his make and cheese was hot enough, but I was fine with lukewarm. My only real complaint is that the fries are those silly wavy frozen carnival fries. I think there's enough potatoes to go around Mexico to make them fresh cut.
Prices are very reasonable as well: $189 pesos for the sandwich and two sides, which included a drink and the 16% tax.
We will definitely be back, as in ... probably our next day back to work. read more
