I often watch comedy (The Middle, Whose Line, King of Queens, etc) on Channel 11, court shows, and Family Feud, cause nothing else is on elsewhere. Also, Channel 11 seem to play less, and less boring, commercials than the 'main' stations, which makes whatever show is on a lot more worth watching.

Or packed with people asking for pledges instead of commercials. I find that it skips over the ages 12-25 in terms of demographics because it shows kid's shows and things geared towards older people like the antiques roadshow. If they did a program that was more relevant for our age group more youth would watch it. I find that when it comes to educational TV the history channel and discovery are better. One thing that did not make logical sense to me was in Arthur the cool kids loved school, homework and things of that sort. Of course I watched this as a child in the late 90's so it could have changed. Most of the kids I knew that liked school had no social life and were often picked on. I don't feel it's right to cram more learning into a kids day. It's like coming home after a busy day of work and watching a show on how wonderful work is. As a kid I thought my parents were trying to brainwash me into liking school!

PublicCola fills this coverage gap very nicely, and is a refreshing change from the what the local mainstream media covers, which now days, flips its nose to the people of the City of Seattle and what they want to read. Since the beginning of the year, they've expanded their coverage from local political, to food, music, legal, and land use to name a few. I've been going to the mainstream sites increasingly less, since the writing is much better and much more on par with what this Seattle resident wants to read. So, if you're sick of the lack of detail that the local tv station or newspaper writes, or want much more detail with a Seattle perspective, head over to PublicCola.net and check it out!

A for Effort. That counts for something, right?…read more I first was turned on to Publicola in the late Summer of 2009, when the primary for Mayor of Seattle was really heating up. As a venture headed up by two former Stranger writers (Josh Feit and Erica C. Barnett), it offered the possibility of decent to better coverage of local issues, with some snarky writing to make things a bit more entertaining. As the campaign wore on past the primary, the comment threads really kept me coming back. While they would, at times, get excessively heated, it was the one place where a bunch of local political junkies, insiders, outsiders who wish they were insiders, and antagonists converged and really hashed out the issues (and, occasionally, solely engaged in trashing the other person's favored nominee/position on the tunnel). It was also during this period that Publicola attempted (from my perspective) to go "mainstream", and offer, per Mr. Feit, a "dose of objectivity" to their reporting, an alternative to the blatantly biased reporting at the Stranger, and more subtle biased reporting at the Seattle Times. All of that aside, I still read Publicola daily, and comment fairly regularly. What I fear the site lacks, however, is a clear direction. At one point, it was a local political reporting site, and it seems to be becoming a hodgepodge of random "nerds", with postings at random times of the day. Some are interesting, some are uninteresting, and some are painfully boring and pointless (and not the funny pointless at the Slog (a la Lindy West)). The morning routine of "Morning Fizz" is never in any logical order for the blurbs on stories involved (literally - they will post on a topic from the City Council, then some random bit about THEESatisfaction, back to the City Council, someone is going to be on KUOW, State Legislature, and some other random bit), and it is common that simple spelling and grammatical errors that MS Word Spellcheck would catch are not caught in the editing room. The "dose" of objectivity is, more often than not, a farce. While there will be occasion of straight news reporting, almost every story includes a clear slant from the reporter involved. Making matters worse, it is rare that there will be opposing viewpoints, until one enters the comment threads. That's not objectivity. There is also the issue of "scoops". It is fairly common that a story will be posted, and end mid-sentence of a paragraph, in shorthand, in order to be the first local outlet to report. I personally find this very troubling, as if being first is more important than being accurate or, even worse, intelligible. Finally, the comment threads are one will_in_seattle away from becoming the mess of BS that the Times comment threads are. This is really sad, because it takes away from good, well thought out conversations to mayor bashing for the sake of mayor bashing. I know that they can't control the comment threads (even though they are known to pull and/or edit comments), but this is just a sad fact. Those gripes aside, the fact that the team at Publicola is willing to do so much digging for stories that most media don't care about (Dr. Bushnell), and really keep following others (the panhandling ordinance), does show a seriousness that they are trying. Where was the Stranger during the Bushnell fiasco? Is the Stranger willing to criticize the man they feigned over during the election? It seems not. Publicola has shown that, even though they'll support you, doesn't mean you're free from tough questions. They've been around for just over a year. I hope that in the next year, they continue to grow, but also continue to work on issues such as editing before posting, ensuring facts are correct, and ordering news items in a way that makes sense. For now, three stars. Maybe next time they can get four.

They tend to be the less "in your face" version of Seattle life…read more When I first got to Seattle, I tended to use this paper to navigate around easier and figure out what events were going on. Less ads and a bit less junk to wade through to get to the point. And it was a fairly good resource to start living downtown. However, after living in Seattle for a little bit, you will notice that this paper tends to miss a lot of events. Especially if your taste is not mainstream. And the "safe" writing tends to get bland after awhile. So I still check out their listings for events and news online. But find that it's better to compare it with "The Stranger" to get all the information.

I highly recommend you give it a whirl and subscribe which is the cost effective way to get any magazine. Even if you don't live on the Eastside, you'll find it relevant and it may have you crossing the bridge a bit more often.

Plus City Dog features all the great adventures you can find outside the city; in the mountains, beaches, small towns - cool stuff to do on the weekends with your dog. Don't let the name fool you --- City Dog is definitely not the NY/LA glam mag for dogs --- it's 100% Go, 0% Show. They do this cool section each issue where they highlight the pets of local celebrities; top chefs, authors, musicians, athletes --- and it's really about the dogs, not so much the person. Helpful sections like a calendar of local dog events, a directory of businesses for just about anything you could need, book reviews...And at only $15 for a subscription it's definitely worth the coin.

I'm genuinely glad it's here. Brazil vs. Japan is on FIFA, my coffee is perfect, I grabbed a new Sub Pop tee because my old one is basically a thread, and my friend and I somehow scored the good leather seats. I walked straight into bliss and found myself in one of Seattle's best places to just exist for a minute.

Bay Area music radio sucks. To a certain extent, most music radio sucks these days, but when you…read morecompare the Bay Area's selection of stations (corporate, college, NPR, etc.) to, say, what you can hear in L.A. County, it's not even close--L.A. wins every time. I grew up and went to college in L.A. County, and I spent way more time driving and, thus, listening to the radio in the 1990s and very early 2000s than I do in the Bay Area. Put another way, when I lived in Southern California, I had radio presets on my car. I've lived in San Francisco since 2003 and have had three cars over that time, and I've never bothered with radio presets, because aside from KQED, KALW, and KPFA (none of which are really music stations), it's generally not worth listening to the radio for music here. Until 2024, that is. I was running errands for an upcoming weekend trip, and I happened upon 92.7 FM, which is technically KEXC but which is just a repeater of 90.3 KEXP in Seattle. Whatever show I caught was really cool and eclectic, a combination of a college-radio station and Santa Monica's KCRW. The music was familiar and new at the same time, and the DJ sounded like a very polished college DJ. Over the next few months, I continued to listen KEXP whenever I drove, and then, when I wasn't driving as much, I started streaming it. It's an amazing station with a long, interesting history in Seattle. Its current iteration is nonprofit, but it's not an NPR affiliate, as far as I can tell, and while it is still somehow connected to the University of Washington, it's not purely owned by the university. If they play anything other than music, I've never heard it. Not all the shows are the same, and some DJs are more interesting than others, but it's generally worth listening to at any time of the day. They have some Bay Area sponsors and ads as well, and while I generally abhor ads, most of them are for small businesses both here and in Seattle, so it feels like real community radio.
