County, it's not even close--L.A. wins every time. I grew up and went to college in L.A. County, and I spent way more time driving and, thus, listening to the radio in the 1990s and very early 2000s than I do in the Bay Area. Put another way, when I lived in Southern California, I had radio presets on my car. I've lived in San Francisco since 2003 and have had three cars over that time, and I've never bothered with radio presets, because aside from KQED, KALW, and KPFA (none of which are really music stations), it's generally not worth listening to the radio for music here. Until 2024, that is. I was running errands for an upcoming weekend trip, and I happened upon 92.7 FM, which is technically KEXC but which is just a repeater of 90.3 KEXP in Seattle. Whatever show I caught was really cool and eclectic, a combination of a college-radio station and Santa Monica's KCRW. The music was familiar and new at the same time, and the DJ sounded like a very polished college DJ. Over the next few months, I continued to listen KEXP whenever I drove, and then, when I wasn't driving as much, I started streaming it. It's an amazing station with a long, interesting history in Seattle. Its current iteration is nonprofit, but it's not an NPR affiliate, as far as I can tell, and while it is still somehow connected to the University of Washington, it's not purely owned by the university. If they play anything other than music, I've never heard it. Not all the shows are the same, and some DJs are more interesting than others, but it's generally worth listening to at any time of the day. They have some Bay Area sponsors and ads as well, and while I generally abhor ads, most of them are for small businesses both here and in Seattle, so it feels like real community radio.

For instance, Lady Gaga was played on C89.5 before she hit it big. There is an interesting mix of songs here. While you might hear a song daily, it does not become repetitive like KISS and the Top 40 format. Other things going for C89.5 are that it is a listener supported station, there are hardly any commercials and the music playlist is diverse. There are several programs that run during the evenings focused on certain genres like the Wednesday night trance show. Interestingly there is gospel music on Sunday mornings which kind of does not mix, but I get it is a community station that is student run. And sometimes that word "student" comes to mind. Specifically when the occasional news report segment comes up. It comes off as amateurish when the reporters stumble with their words while Seattle listens. But cut the person reporting some slack because it is for classroom learning. Being a student run station, C89.5 is impressive with its great music selection and for the most part competes well with the other stations on the dial trying to gain my attention.

What other station plays Doris Day, Sam Cooke, ABBA, Andy Williams, and The Beatles alongside "Tara's Theme" from 'Gone with the Wind' and "The Impossible Dream" from 'Man of La Mancha'? All the hosts at this nonprofit station are volunteers and they each have their own unique and delightful presence on the air. They really do play "the best music ever made" and I derive much pleasure from anticipating what they'll play next. I listen to it all the way in San Antonio, and love it! They're apt to follow a Bob Marley song with a synth pop song. They play grunge polka, flaccid jazz, retro fusion pop, and all the hits! They have award winning talk shows, all put on by students, and DJs who know their stuff. There are no commercials, since it's a community radio station. Instead they play public service announcements about how lobsters have feelings too! Super varied music, with funny weird DJs!
