So eight months ago I would have written a very different review. Seven months ago I was injured by…read moremy physical therapist at Select. Mike Holmes is very good sometimes at what he does. He does have some blind spots though that you should know about before you would choose to work with him. I have been in extreme pain every day and night since the beginning of May, 2022. My life has been altered in a way that has put me into a depression. I missed my spring, summer and fall and there is no end in sight at this point. I have missed a friend's funeral due to not being able to travel. I can't go on vacation, I can't do my art or gardening and my new physical therapy with someone else is progressing so slowly that we can do hardly anything. My doctor says I have a long road ahead of me. I was almost finished seeing Mike for the issue that brought me to him. In fact, I thought it was our last visit. He can be extremely arrogant and when he gets like that, won't listen. He became obsessed with what he referred to as my dowager's hump. I told him that I had been born with a curvature of the spine, and he knew that I had degenerative disc disease. The disc disease was the cause of the issues that I had seen him for off and on over a two year period. He wanted me to hyperextend backwards on a table with arms overhead over a hard plastic roll that is hard as a rock. I argued with him for 10 mins about it telling him that I thought it might injure me and that it was a move I'd never been able to do as a child and certainly not as a 68 year old woman. He kept saying just do it. Finally, he leaned down and said to me..."we've talked about that hump". A manipulative move with an old lady not feeling great about how society views older women. Unfortunately, I did do it. I told him it felt like I broke my back. He smiled and told me to move the roll slightly and try again. When I said it still hurt he told me to hold to the count of 20, 3 times. He told me to continue it at home and when I came in the next time and told him I was in too much pain to do any home exercises or do anything there, he said, "let's try it another way" with me on my stomach trying to push up with my arms. When I broke down in sobs, he tossed me a kleenix. He did not take any of this under advisement. He in fact did not appear to care. He seemed annoyed. I know that when in physical therapy, true pain is a sign that you are doing something you should not be doing. He refused to take note of this. I had always been completely compliant with him. He should have at least viewed this as unusual and noteworthy. So, after 2 sets of Xrays and 2 MRIs, we find that I have a torn disc, a protruding disc, another disc sliding another the other and pain like I've never had before. When I went in to the spine guy after 4 months or so of dealing with this, he couldn't believe a physical therapist would have ever done this. He said, don't ever let anyone do this to you again. The 3 new physical therapists I've seen have all been devasted for me and couldn't believe someone would have a woman my age with degenerative disc disease do this. All three of them were angry. I bring this to your attention because orginally when I finally contacted him, I told him that I wouldn't give him a bad review or report him or sue him, I just wanted him to learn and never do this to another person. However, his attitude has made me believe that he may not have learned anything from this. He actually tried to blame me for it by saying, "I thought you knew your body and what it could handle but I guess I was wrong". I think we had a communication problem. When I mentioned my 10 mins. of explaining to him why I shouldn't do it, coupled with all my reports of severe pain afterwards including massive cramping of my entire back, both legs and neck (cramps which he worked to try to remove to no avail), he said, "well, I heard you say those words but it didn't seem like you said them with the same strength. Since then, Mike's supervisor had two conversations with me laughing both times. He referred the matter to their insurance company and legal team, telling me that they would contact me. NO ONE HAS CONTACTED ME. The last time I heard from him by text was Nov. 9th, saying they would contact me soon. Again. Nothing but crickets. If I were you, I would consider another physical therapist. I think that Mike manages the place so that is something to keep in mind.

Covid was in full swing, and I was in so much pain and had very little movement in my left (dominant) arm. I was taking over the counter painkillers morning, noon, and night, and was not getting relief. I thought I was going to have to have surgery to repair my injured left shoulder. Over the first few visits, Brian, assessed my injury, my movements, what caused pain, or didn't cause pain and taught me small movements to practice at home until we met again. Brian isolated where the pain was; down the arm, in the back side of shoulder, in the armpit, along the neck and shoulders and gave me exercises to practice at home for these areas. He taught me exercises with specific movements to strengthen my shoulder muscles. Brian incorporated dry needling to help with the pain, and what a game changer it was. The dry needling and physical therapy I received at Laughlin has been some of the best pain relief and hands on, constructive therapy I have ever received for an injury. The Best! In all it took about 6-7 months to clear up my shoulder issue. I have full mobility. I went from not being able to raise my hand over my head, hold a cast iron pan, clean the floor, vacuum, or any of the fun things I love to do - Kayak, carpentry, bowling. I had no idea how depressed I was when I started going to Laughlin Physical therapy due to how limited my life had become because of my injury. Brian helped me gain strength, decrease the pain I was suffering, increased my confidence in trusting my arm movements and postures, to do things I love doing. I am forever grateful for the skilled, precise, and innovative physical therapy training he taught me. I highly recommend Laughlin and their staff. From the front desk to the physical therapists - they all do a fantastic job.

I had to force the issue of effectively treating the situation and it still took them 10 days before they bothered to do the correct treatment that should have been done on postop day 2. This borders on malpractice. Secondly, when I was asked, I told them that I expected to be walking without a cane after surgery. I had been forced to use a cane for about 5-6 years prior to surgery due to safety concerns and the need to preserve what I could of being able to use the knee. My expectation of being able to walk normally was completely ignored. Instead, when I tried to walk without the cane, I was told to keep using the cane. This continued throughout my entire time in rehab. Somehow they thought that using the cane was going to help me be able to walk without it. Even I don't think that's right!! This means that I couldn't really walk when they decided to dismiss me from their care. They didn't care about getting to the correct place; all they cared about was that I could stand and waddle around a little with the cane. That is not good rehabilitation. It is coming up on a year since my surgery and I still cannot walk normally because they never appropriately addressed the problems in my hips that were caused by the use of the cane. Basically they expected me to figure it out on my own. I am going to have to go to a different doctor (not one who is part owner of this facility) and a different PT place in order to get proper medical care. I find that disgusting. I will never recommend this PT facility to anyone. At this point I am unsure if I will ever be able to return to my sport. They do not care about performance. Do they even know what that word means? They only care about money.

My first workout was mild, but Ian built the intensity slowly over several sessions, so that the last 2 sessions I had left me feeling the endorphins for about 24 hours after the workouts, which is so close to being completely pain free so that even my husband noticed how much happier I was after the aquatherapy. Do NOT let fear of the water intimidate you from taking advantage of this wonderful resource! In the same way race horses are toned in water tanks for racing, you can rebuild your strength with aquatherapy! And, lastly, the folks at the front desks are always friendly and happy to see you, even though this facility is quite busy with patients who stay and patients that come daily. I am so glad I was willing to drive the 50 minutes it takes me to get there for these sessions every week.
