I love to be able to go here for a walk and then a pint and a little bit of food. The staff are always great, warm friendly and helpful and the food in terms of the offerings and range and the quality are all excellent. Great food, great people, great ambiance and great views.

I ordered the fish and chips and, when I was finished eating, I specifically asked for the remainder of my food to be taken away and boxed up so I could bring it home. After we received and paid our bill, I sat waiting for my leftovers to be returned. They never came. We eventually asked our server, Matthew, where my food was, and he told me it had been thrown away because I had supposedly told him to throw it away. I absolutely did not. I had specifically asked for it to be boxed up. Mistakes happen, and although I was understandably frustrated that food I had paid for was thrown away, what happened next is what completely changed my opinion of the experience. When I expressed my frustration, Matthew told me to "get over myself." I was genuinely stunned. There is a huge difference between making an honest mistake and speaking disrespectfully to a paying customer after that mistake is brought to your attention. An apology or even a simple attempt to make the situation right would have gone a long way. Instead, I was spoken to dismissively and made to feel as though I was the problem for questioning why my food had been thrown away. We are visiting from the United States, and I was excited to experience local places while here. Unfortunately, this interaction left an awful impression. I hope the owner or management sees this review because regardless of the misunderstanding over the food, telling a customer to "get over yourself" is completely inappropriate and unacceptable customer service. The Dirty Duck may be a beautiful and popular place, but our experience with the service was incredibly disappointing.

The towns we passed from Donegal to Castelderg didn't even have a coffee shop open after 4pm (its…read moreoff season right now) We were wondering if we would even get anything to eat in Castelderg - our halt for the night. My stomach is rebelling at the fried, cheesy, potato and bread overload from pub style food. When we reached Castelderg, all we could see were takeaway places that didn't even have a chair to sit on, forget a table. We weren't sure how our B&B would feel about us bringing a takeaway to eat in their dining room (I can't abide the smell of food in the bedroom). Then we suddenly saw this sit down place. We weren't even sure from the lighting if it was open. But we parked and they said they were serving dinner. The menu looked standard, but we were just grateful for a quiet place to sit down and eat. What followed has to be the biggest surprise of this trip foodwise. Red Pepper restaurant served us Michelin quality food, that people would queue up for hours in London! We started with a duck liver pate and a vegetable soup. I ordered a grilled chicken main and we had creme brûlée and vanilla pannacotta for dessert. He asked for a large whisky with hot water, they recommended adding cloves and lemon (free Irish warming cocktail upgrade alert) The bill for all of this was 29£ Yes Twenty Nine Pounds only. The quality, the presentation and the fantastically friendly service! Colin & Marie are doing everything right!

Having heard good reports about the food there, a group of us made the trip to Viscounts on a…read morerecent Friday evening. The restaurant is in an old church hall and as the name suggests is themed Heraldic. At 6 pm it was quite busy. We all plumped for the Early Bird menu, served from 16:30 to 18:30 two courses, main and dessert (£12.95). True to form our two offspring decided that they'd also have a starter. Hang the budget! Daughter went for scallops with black pudding fritters in a celeriac sauce while son ordered the beetroot and goat's cheese salad. Due to the chef's oversight, the goat's cheese arrived but the beetroot was AWOL. This was corrected promptly with apologies. For main course we had chicken goujons with salad and a spicy dip, steakburger with onion marmalade and grilled cheddar (x2) (in one case blue cheese was requested, and served, in place of the cheddar) and beef stroganoff (x2). I had the latter and loved it. Home-made chunky chips accompanied some of the dishes; they were beautifully cooked and couldn't be faulted a remark that applies across the board. All present tried the Tobacco Onions. Very good. Desserts (from a choice of four) were lemon tart (x2), Bailey's Cream and white chocolate cheesecake and pavlova. Wife strayed from the menu and ordered ice-cream. A pint of lager, vodka and mixer, three diet cokes and four Cappuchinos were the beverages consumed. Total Bill: £100.10. Fine. The food was both delicious and plentiful. We all left the restaurant agreeing that a return trip was inevitable. I have no hesitation in recommending Viscounts.
