Small restaurant, surprised they accommodated my reservation for a party of 10 in the entry dining room space. Didn't expect the divey bar vibe, but ended up loving the oddities and fox decor. For food, the menu focused primarily on tapas/small plates - wished it had specified the number of pieces per order, but no worries, our server was quite knowledgeable. We took advantage of all the promotions: happy hour discounted cocktails and FIVE DOLLAR wine (um, I'll have several glasses, please), 10 tapas for AUD $109, as well as 3 tapas for AUD $30 - great deals! We shared a ton of small plates and pretty much ordered the entire menu, including a large sharing plate, the Butcher's Block meat platter. Some hits, some misses. Recommend ordering: chicken wings, chicken skewers, arancini, and quinoa salad (add lamb). Everything else was just OK. Overall, decent food and drinks at affordable prices. What's not to love about a tame but tricky little fox who scampers around in the near darkness balancing well-crafted cocktails on his noise? Ok, the fox might be a mere hallucination but the cocktails exist- oh boy, do they exist- and so does the tantalizing food menu to match. I went recently to Mr Fox for dinner / drinks with a friend. We ended up ordering the meat share platter ($25) which had a little bit of everything included- steak skewers, marinated chicken wings, toasted breads with three dips, cured ham strips, falafels, olives and a small bowl of mixed nuts. It was enormously good value for money as we could barely even make a dent and before becoming stuffed to the point of bursting. I must also make a nod to the cocktails, which are fantastic. I started with a mint julep which certainly didn't disappoint in the authenticity department. Served over crushed ice in the traditional chilled silver glass, it was the perfect refreshing kick in the pants I needed. My second drink of the night was a classic Manhattan, which was also flawlessly created down to the tiny cherry in the bottom of my glass. And did I mention my favorite thing about Mr Fox? He's hip, he's crafty, he's Mr. Fox. You can find Mr. Fox on the corner of Cleveland and Crown, inconspicuously serving delicious cocktails to his guests. Mr. Fox is one of the few places on this side of Surry Hills that is worth going for a drink. It's sufficiently modish, with the walls covered from ceiling to floor with drawings or neon chalk scribbles. Keep this in mind if you're sitting on the stools or on the left wall. I made the mistake of leaning on the walls while sipping my drink, not noticing that my entire back was covered in smudgy chalk markings. I probably would have cared more if I were less inebriated. Mr. Fox offers standard cocktails and their own specialty ones, too. I opted to stick to beer (you know the rule), but my friends' drinks were adequately alcoholic. On a Saturday night, it wasn't as full as I expected it to be and, thankfully, the music was at a decent sound level to foster conversation. The crowd was mixed with hipsters, few 30-something couples, and a sprinkling of sleazy younger folk. Mr. Fox has been in the Crown Street hood for about 18 months and somehow I've been walking past it with Mint on my mind. Luckily Mint was shuttered on Wednesday and so I stumbled into Mr. Fox. The Fox is a divey dark cave of well made drinks and chalkboards on walls with random scribbles, homely couches and a long bar counter. The fox has a well stocked gin and bourbon collection -Not to mention a good selection of mainly Australian wines and a beer fridge full of Doss Blockos in their lovely paper bags. As I was on my own I had a glass of Two Italian Boys Sangiovese to keep me company ($8) and a bowlful of the complimentary salt and vinegar popcorn (see note below) and chatted with the bartenders. My friend showed up after a bit and we perused the bad boy menu (not joking it's full of mug shots of bad celebrity boys) and we were tempted by the sidecar and martini shaken or stirred promises. We will definitely be back again as we had to run. Mr. Fox is blokey and kicked back, in a great location and worth hitting up next time on the weekend. What a hoot this place it! We have been there three times now and had exactly what we wanted - an easy, relaxed and good time. On all occasion, so far, we have been there for pre-dinner drinks. I love the choice of (Chesterfield) couch, table or high table seating, especially when you are in certain moods. The drinks list is good and I was suprised by the range of spirits. I am not really into spirits but a number of the friends I have been with are and they have been delighted with the choices. We haven't had any of the food menu as yet, but it does look good. Only gripe, a bit snug in parts and the crowd can be loud (yes I am getting old). I had probably one of the best cocktails here that I had in a long, long time! It was called million or billion dollar baby or something? All cinnamony, sweet, but with a kick and dehydrated pear on top! Which the bartender did himself! Spectacular! The staf were all super friendly and great, too. Excellent Place! I researched places to have a friends hens and found Mr Fox had a small function room upstairs. Went and checked it out and it looked suitable for us. After going home and deciding to go ahead with the booking, it was a little difficult to make initial contact. My friend and I called and emailed a few times. Eventually after booking with this email address I had superb communication. The event manager James regularly replied to emails, confirmed my booking, sent menus and was a pleasure to deal with. There are a range of catered platters to select from, ranging from $330 (for 10-15 people) to $1000 platters for 40 people. Prior to the event we decided on what food platters we wanted, what time they would come out etc. What I thought was amazing is that there is no booking fee. It is a minimum spend of $1000 on a Saturday, but that is not much at all if you include the platters, drinks and spread the cost out over your group. I thought value for money for the food was absolutely incredible, the food was overflowing; I actually asked to halve the servings because I was personally worried about wastage with my friends not eating as much as I expected. We ordered the cheese platter for $80 which had so many varieties of cheese in huge servings; haloumi, fetta, blue cheese, brie, camembert, tasty and all types of crackers you could possibly ask for as well as focaccias and more. It was presented beautifully and ready on arrival. We ordered the $550 platter as well which included an antipasto platter of pickled vegetables (my favourite), aged and cured meats, marinated olives and also dips. We got the delicious chicken wings, meatballs, oven roasted Portobello mushrooms, chorizo and fries (though I don't remember getting those). Food tasted great and good finger food for a party. For a different event, you can also order a seated set menu if your group is smaller. The wait staff on the night, were regularly suppling the food, cleaning up and excellent service. There is a private bar and bar man as well, and you can put on a table or order bottles. We ordered bottles of sparkling wine and wine which my guests got through. The barman was so kind and made my friend, the hen a complimentary cocktail which she thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated. I also had a delicious cocktail which the bar man took his time to prepare. There are a good range of cocktails, wines and also sangria.In terms of styling  It is a small, dark room, almost "prohibition" styled with candles, lamps, and vintage furniture. It had small stools and tables to sit at and would fit about 20 people I think.  downstairs. I would also like to comment that the manager and event planner were very flexible with letting me go in and set up the room with decorations. He offered to help and event packed things up so I could come and collect them the next day. You could have the venue until midnight if you so please. A well run place with excellent staff and I would thoroughly recommend for a small event. Thanks for everything! I had my 21st at Mr Fox in their private room upstairs. Dave ran a cocktail class for me and twelve of my friends and it was amazing. He was so friendly and knowledgeable, willing and able to answer any questions we had about basically any cocktail. He gave us origin stories for everything we made and ensured everyone had a go at getting involved in making a delicious concoction. It was for such a great price too. If anyone wants to do something a little different to celebrate an occasion, I can't recommend a cocktail class at Mr Fox enough (it's not mentioned on their website that they can do it, you have to ask and you definitely should). We had share plates and wine for dinner afterwards and everything was delicious. I especially loved the meatballs and haloumi (such a good glaze on the haloumi). Our bartender/waiter for the night, Leon, was attentive without hovering and really friendly. The room had a great atmosphere because of the decor. It didn't just look like your typical bland function room. Ian was so helpful when we were organising everything and checked in during the night to make sure everything was going well. He didn't rush us to leave at all at the end of the night even though things were being packed up for the night downstairs. It was also made easy for my mum to drop off the cake earlier in the day. My friends all enjoyed themselves and I had exactly the 21st I wanted. I can't thank the team enough. Great staff, great food, great cocktails, you really are fantastic Mr Fox. read more

If I could give this place 1/4 of a star I would. I think they have changed management because this is not the 4-5 star place that people rated last year. The menu is different and in what world does an antipasto plate with thick cut (half raw) chorizo, cheese and balsamic glaze drizzled on top make sense?! This place was just such a let down. Their pork dish was also very lacklustre with chunks of dry pork supported by tinned tomato and herbs. Tasteless? That's exactly what it was. Love this place, have been here many times of the day and always have a good time. Nice vibe, lots of choice with drinks and cocktails, tapas type food options, friendly staff. In April it was my birthday... i wanted a low key affair, somewhere quaint to catch up with a few close friends and enjoy a night of tapas and champagne.. We arrived to be told the booking had not been made (i did call that day) and then was given wine glasses instead of champagne flutes to drink their most expensive bottle of champagne..(out of flutes??) i wasnt very happy with the service or attitude of the management. Not one to get disheartened i was happy to be there with friends.. lady luck was lookin out for me and some people at a table left and we sat down. After about an hour the place filled up to the point we were yelling to hear each other. The level of noise was not good, between the people and the music coming down from the second level it was the main reason i will not go back unless. The walls were a chalk board and as fun as it looked in the picture being an arty small wine bar, catering to that many people it was crowded i must admit i came home with chalk on my clothes as our table was next to the wall (not overly thought out). ONE GOOD point was the food, the tapas was delicious and we all enjoyed sharing it immensely. Overall i had a fantastic time with beautiful friends but the actual place was a let down and i wont be revisiting. read more
