I was looking for late night bites and this place popped up. They have specials during the week; dollar dogs on Tuesdays, Jukebox Thursday, and I went on Movie Monday; they were playing Sister Act. When you first walk up to the place you think it's just a little pop up soda stand. There's no sign on the outside so it's easy to pass up. I think there's normally a security guard or hostess but no one was there when we walked up. This cute little venue is a speakeasy. Walked in and loved the chill vibes. It was dark, movie playing, people lounging around drinking cocktails, eating ice cream and popcorn. aka a mini heaven. Comfy couches, bean bags, and tables. They have an "American" menu, which made me laugh. Their menu is straight up late night munchies food; mac-n-cheese balls, waffle cone poppers, buffalo wings, waffle fries, dogs, and fried chicken. They have some crafty cocktails with funky names. I went with the Jameson on the rocks with a side of fries and fried chicken sandwich. I would give zero stars if i could. Absolutely appalled as so what happened last night at this bar. I can go on and on about how the security guards were assholes for not reason but i will make it relatively (short). One security guard accidentally punched my girlfriend in the face because he was so angry that she moved the curtain. The other security guard was huge, but he was a pussy. He lacked common sense, respect, and human decency. My friend had 2 drinks and he wouldn't let him in because he was asking why he looked at his passport 37 times. Not to mention they looked up and down at us and our passports like we were animals in a zoo trying to figure out what foreign animal we were. Not only were we treated like zoo animals but also 12 year olds who have never been to a bar. You are also not allowed to have human contact with each other just like the animals in the zoo. My friend was kissing his girlfriend on the couch and they kicked him out because they said he was too intoxicated. ITS A BAR! 5 star for the experience. 3.5 stars for the food. The food was just so so. They had a deal for a bucket of chicken and so we opted to get it. The chicken was soft and juicy in the inside and flaky on the outside. The pieces were big. Not exactly like your Buffalo Wild Wings size. Have to many and you could get sick. I'd say, stick to sharing it between 3 people. We quickly got tired of it with just the 2 of us. Their hot dogs were pretty ok too. Well never mind, they're just any gourmet hot dog for $1 on Tuesdays but pay that no mind because now there's something better: Fat Bubba's Chicken Wednesdays. $1 hot wings and $10 buckets of fried chicken. I'll pause here for you to consider those prices. Very un-Sydney-like, no? Came here with some Yelpers on a Wednesday and went to town, and when I say town I mean TOWN, son, because there was more chicken all up in our face-holes than is healthy and/or practical. The fried chicken comes breaded, the hot wings, well hot winged. They don't have any hot sauce which is kinda a bummer, but tabasco did in a pinch. Use an Anchor Steam lager to wash it down, then sit back and rub your belly and figure out how you're going to get home when you can't even stand up, not for a few hours. At least there's music. The Soda Factory opened up this past Friday and this place encompasses COOL...maybe too cool for school. The entrance doesn't even say The Soda Factory; it looks like a 50s diner, and you enter by opening a massive Coca Cola fridge door where you're then welcomed to an Industrial paradise. Tale of two cities. There's an island bar smack dab in the center, a stage for music/movies, chairs that make you think of leather bound books and smells of rich mahogany, and a friendly and hip staff. When you order they give you a playing card instead of a number, which is a cool concept, but they're still working the kinks out as orders were getting mixed up last night. There's always something going on each day, from Movie Mondays, Tightass Tuesdays, and special guest DJs and more. We came on Tightass Tuesday for their $1 Gourmet Hot Dogs. $1!!!!! These hot dogs are typically $10, and much larger, but you cannot beat $1 hot dogs anywhere...I ended up eating 3 and split an order of chilli-cheese fries with a friend, meaning our total bill sans drinks was $6.50 (the Asian in me is ecstatic.) Unless you're vegan...skip the Yoko Ono (vegan dog.) I really enjoyed the Johnny Drama and the Frank Sinatra was a favourite amongst others. The Fats Domino wasn't bad either. The chilli-cheese fries here are good, as is the mac & cheese, and the raspberry float cocktail is sweet goodness. While getting ready to head to the VIP launch for The Soda Factory bar, I was excited because I was thinking 'finally Sydney is getting it's act together'. The invite stated: "A phoney fifties' coke machine makes a secret entrance to a space you'd never expect: welcome to The Soda Factory" When I was in London last year I went to so many amazing bars that had secret bars within bars. I remember thinking this is what Sydney needs. Holding on to the belief that The Soda Factory was going to live up to my expectations you could picture my disappointment when they did the complete opposite. I appreciate them trying to do something different but it fell flat pretty quickly. I feel like they spent all their money on decking out the entrance and completely forgot about the bar itself. Also if this was there best attempt at showcasing the bar and giving us a good night I wouldn't want to be there on a normal night out. *The bar service was slow and they all looked like they didn't want to be there. *The sound system was shocking and I am worried about all the acts that they are going to get to perform here. * The inside doesn't look much different to when the bar was Tone * I didn't score a hotdog so I may need to head back to taste it's "supposedly" only redeemable factor. If you needed a reason besides $1 hotdogs, then how about the hip swagger vibe and old school music they have going on? This place is a little dark lighting wise but it is rocking and pumping after 6pm. If you want a seat, definitely come before 6pm, otherwise you'll be standing with your hotdogs! Take it one step further by reserving a table! The dogs were okay but the stand out has to be the buffalo bill ones. I ended up ordering 3 of them. I got to admit, I didn't finish the bread but the sausage and the toppings were so so good. The Elvis Presley is a sweet way to finish off your meal! Good thing about the cheap dogs is that you're able to splurge your money on drinks! I had the Samuel Adams Boston Lager and it was an awesome beer - had a slight sweet tangy-ness to it, something I haven't tasted in Aussie beer. Definitely a swanky establishment with an American vibe. Enter, and you feel like you have stepped into an American diner, where the staff would wear all white, a white bow tie with a paper hat serving hot dogs and milkshakes. Although they don't here. The difficulty is in finding out where to enter. Open up that novelty door, and then another black door, and you're in. Even mid week, if you get here a little too late its hard work finding a suitable spot to sit, and to order something from the bar. A great vibe though. There's not many things you can get for $1 in Sydney...let alone anywhere. The Soda Factory offers $1 gourmet hot dogs on Tuesdays and it is glorious! I would have been content if they offered plain hot dogs for $1, but it's their entire hot dog menu for $1 each! A few friends and I checked out this place since it had just opened up. So glad we decided to stop by. The atmosphere is great and it sorta has that speakeasy feel to it especially since the entrance is somewhat hidden. You walk up and it says 'Bobby's Boss Dogs' that does takeout orders, but you walk thru a 'secret' door and you're inside The Soda Factory. The chili cheese fries are a must get as they might be one of my favorite that I've tried in Sydney. There's plenty to choose from on the hot dog side, but I would definitely recommend the Fats Domino along with the Texas Redneck. On Tuesdays they pretty much cut the size of the dogs in half and serve them for a $1. So on the regular you're looking to spend about $10 for a decent sized dog. They also have a full bar serving some interesting cocktails inspired by the time they're trying theme the place by. This place will have to be my go-to on Tuesdays. Soda Factory has been on my To Do list for a while now. If only I knew what was waiting for me there I would have ticked this little hot spot off sooner. Two words: Buffalo Chicken......Hotdog. Dripping with Franks Red Hot and mayo, smothering a crispy gourmet chicken sausage, topped off with melted cheese. Controversially it was generously sprinkled with coriander, or as I like to call it scary-spice-tastes-like-the-smell-of-a-dead-ant. Next time (and there will be a next time) I'll ask them to leave that off. Drinks list was very cool. I had a Sweet Gal's Blush and the eponymous Joe's Pale Ale. Thursdays is $12 cocktails and a Doo Wop band. Most seemed to be here for the food, the drinks and the "scene" but there were a couple of serious swing dancers which definitely enhanced the atmosphere which would otherwise have been in danger of being homogenised into that of every other small bar by the young'uns. I'm so old. The fact that you can book is a big plus. We booked for 10 but only got seats for 6. I suspect as we were a little late someone snaked our spot but the friendly staff found us more chairs. The only minus is that the drink service is a little slow. They're more British backpacker than career bartender behind the bar. You can tell by the lack of bushranger beards. In summary: Soda Factory. I like that s#/t. This was my second time at The Soda Factory, but my first time checking out Tuesday $1 Hot Dog Night. Doors open at 5pm so I thought I'd come a bit early just to avoid the crowd. Apparently 30 uni students had the same idea and were already crowding the door when I arrived.. FML!!!! I thought about tossing in the towel and checking it out another time, but I decided to carry on. Doors open and security comes out and tells everyone to line up against the wall. Since the uni students were grouped together and I was already near the wall.. I go from the back of the pack to one of the first 10 in through the doors.. WOOOOOO!!!! Suck on that Uni students! jk I love you kids :) I go straight to the bar and order my cheap wieners: Johnny Drama, Bobby's Boss Dog, Yoko Ono (veggie.. my mom would be so proud!) and Elvis Presley (dessert). The gal taking my order was quick to tell me that I need to order a beverage with every 6 dogs. I didn't want to get a soda (in the soda factory? psh!) so I got a pint of whatever was on tap. Dollar hot dog night just turned into $12 (veggie dog was $2). There were more "Reserved" tables than open ones and the uni students were quick to claim the open ones. I managed to find a tiny bar table in the corner. As soon as I sat down my order came out! Are these pre-made?? I take my first bite of Bobby's Boss Dog and I was pretty disappointed. Beef/Pork sausage was cold and flavorless. There was a very modest sprinkle of diced onions with mustard/tomato sauce. The Johnny Drama and Yoko Ono dogs were better but still far from an "American Hot Dog" - warm bun, warm wiener, slathered with a generous amount of mustard/tomato sauce. The best dog was their dessert dog - fried bananas with peanut butter and strawberry jam.. That saved them from a two star rating. I get that it's busy at night but some of the workers there are just wandering around trying to figure out what to do when 1 or 2 people are trying to take orders for 20 people. Highlights of my visit with a friend on a busy Friday night. The venue: speakeasy style. Tough to find. Passed it on the street 3 times since it's not labeled Soda Factory outside. Stepped inside and had to wait to find our own table. There are a handful of couches and tables in the lounge area, and a few cocktail tables/chair scattered throughout, but beware seating is limited. (If you aren't lucky enough to snag a comfy couch, be advised the metal chairs are far from comfortable) Wound up getting a table right in front of the stage right before the band came on. It was too loud to have a conversation before the band, much less while the band was playing. Vibe: Hipster casual. Kind of a throwback American speakeasy feel. More of a bar than a restaurant though they have a full menu. Stage with live music was a nice touch. Band was kind of funky, I dug 'em. Service: There are food runners but no waitresses to take orders. Order from the bar. The bar is very busy but the bartenders are attentive and friendly - was able to order quickly. Food: Ordered the pork ribs with chips and the chicken and waffles. Pork ribs were a little dry and left a lot to be desired in terms of meat quantity for the price. Chips were basic and nothing special. The chicken and waffles were very tasty but the waffle was very thick and heavy, not light and fluffy like I'm accustomed to in the states. Mixed with the heavily fried chicken made for a very heavy meal. Value: Expensive but standard for Sydney. Two meals and two drinks runs about $60. read more

Yes yes I know shameless bragging is despicable and I do apologise. Who lives in a house like this? you'll exclaim {100% guaranteed or your wallet and wrist watch back}, as you enter the joint and you find yourself in a tiled room with a fast food counter and a coca cola fridge in the corner... Hot Dogs! Hot Dogs! its a hot dog joint... ! who doesn't like hot dogs? if you are answering yes at this point you need to seriously think about your life choices. Seriously. But as you ponder your hotdog choices you'll swiftly realise there's no Coke in that fridge! In fact that fridge is the Wardrobe from, the Lion, the witch and the Wardrobe except its a coke Fridge and instead of Narnia, this magic portal takes you into a awesome bar instead of a fantasy land filled with witches, talking animals and swords. Same thing really after three rum and gingers. Here in we have a really awesome stage space for live music a dedicated DJ booth a beautiful bar fully kitted out to mix some badass cocktails and keep that thurst quenched. Pulp Kitchen baby. This is the only reason I went to The Soda Factory. A $5 menu based on Pulp Fiction? A Tarantino playlist? Yes please! The food you get for $5 is just out of this world. We decided to sample 3 out of the 4 dishes on offer. The Royale with Cheese was delicious! A really hearty burger with heaps of ketchup and pickles - keeping it simple. The fries and mayo were great as well - the fries were crunchy as and the serving was plentiful. The Fried Chicken was great value for money as well - 2 massive pieces of chicken for $5! Then of course - the $5 shake. At first I was actually disheartened to see that it was an alcoholic beverage....but I had 3. DELICIOUS! I'm not going to say what was in it because it doesn't sound like it would mesh - but damn if that milkshake wasn't delicious! The music wasn't too loud so conversations weren't strained. Plenty of space and plenty of seats. Only criticism it is a mite too dark in there. To the point where I needed to get out my phone to read the menu. Your eyes adjust eventually - but it's more annoying than cool. Although it does stop the hipsters from Instagram-ing away..... AND they had Pulp Fiction playing in the background! Loved it! Discount burger special was not that good, but ask for tomato sauce and it goes down smoother. The drinks are great and rather pricey for this kind of establishment, but worth it. Had the special hard milkshake - it was yummy but don't have more than 2 or you start to feel a little weird from the dairy overload. Live doo wop band was on par and made me really happy. They use more unique instruments like the cello and performers as well as servers & bartenders are dressed in '60s gear so it makes for a fantastic, fun, authentic atmosphere. The sneaky entrance makes you feel special for having found it (my friend & I walked up and down the street a couple of times before finding it). The entry way looks like a small anteroom to an apartment building or hostel, but just ask the man standing at the door (unsuspecting bouncer), and he'll open a soda vending machine door and- surprise! You're at an awesome bar. Cannot wait to go back. One of the first bars I went to in Sydney, and after 2 months I'm still raving about it whenever people ask me for bar suggestions/what bars I like. read more

If you wanna get hammered in 5 minutes flat, order the ROY ORBISON. Holy shhh... Great drink, and STIFF AS FUCK. Otherwise this is a pretty nifty, trendy little bar in Surry Hills. You know, just like the 10+ others like it. A little retro, a little kitch, not obvious from the street... "cool and secret", behind a door that looks like something it's not, blah, blah, blah... I really enjoy the concept of this venue, I'm just not entirely sold on the execution - yet. What I loved was the Pulp Kitchen menu (I'm a huge Tarantino fan, so this was very exciting for me) and the Bourbon Caramel $5 shake went down a treat. Hot Dogs are pretty good too, however service is slow and it wasn't even busy when I was there. Also there was a lack of available seating which I realise can't really be helped, but my friend and I felt a little awkward as we were the only people standing. The service is so slow in this place I could cry. If you're going to do cocktails then have more staff available so people don't have to wait 25 mins to get served. My order went from 4 drinks to, instead, ordering 2 bottles of wine so we didn't have to go through the process again. The music was great but have since discovered The MacQuarie down the road on the corner which does brilliant live music on a Saturday night and also cheaper drinks which you don't have to bulk buy in. Have heard of the place, but never actually thought about it until I went here for an unofficial Yelper Event on a Wednesday to try the fried chicken where $10 buys you a bucket of chicken (Wednesday special), which is good for at least 2 or 3 people - therefore at least $5 each. Of course Hot-Star is still better in a way as you don't need to find 2 - 3 people, but this place still delivers. Just come early and make a table reservation. What a trendy little interesting place that could easily missed if you dont know what you are looking for. When you arrive at the sign BIG BOSS HOT DOGS you have arrived but you dont realize this until you enter through the coca cola doors.. i went here last night to attend a meet up event which was a free movie and cheap drinks.. $5 happy hour between 5 and 7 got the crowd in. The movie that got me there in the first place was "hes just not that into you" yup its a chick flick :) I found the atomospher to be great.. low lit.. great decore and a decent size. The service lacked a bit.. in all fairness it was busy.. i ordered their world famouse mac and cheese and it gave my taste buds the resemblance of KD from back in Canada (one of my favourite snacks) so i was happy with that.. what i wasnt happy about waiting close to an hour.. when i went back to the bar the bartender said they couldnt find me and to be fare im short and the place was packed but ya.. when it came it was good.. the bartender also comped my last wine for the inconvenience which turned the experience right around.. Ok. I'll be straight forward and say that I love going to places like this... "Secret" entrance, themed nights, good food, excellent music... All the ingredients for an enjoyable night! Place is great, vibe was fun however I had trouble with getting my food. I ordered buffalo wings and instead got a buffalo bill hotdog. The server apologised and she was great to me. I went back to the counter to order again and it took about 35 mins to get my order; it turns out they had never sent the second order to the kitchen. By the time my wings arrived my girlfriend had long finished her meal. When they finally arrived there were only five wings and they were tiny, almost as if they were from a quail. They weren't bad, but they certainly weren't sufficient for the price; the amount of time I had to wait and the effort of getting these wings. I had heard a lot about The Soda Factory and seen long lines out the door on a Saturday night when walking past. Suffice to say, I was expecting big things! The entrance wasn't immediately obvious as it says 'Bobby's Flay Burgers' however there was a bouncer outside the door so figured that must be where it is. Once we got our ID checked (they check everyone's even if you definitely look over age!) and walked in, the door to actually entering also wasn't obvious. Luckily, my sis had been before so knew which door to open! The place was kinda busy at 6ish. Tables were full up already so it was hard to find somewhere to stand and prop up our drinks. We ended up sharing a table. Service at the bar took a long time. I ordered cheese burger spring rolls and my sis ordered chicken nachos and a strawberry cheesecake milkshake. My spring rolls weren't memorable and the milkshake just tasted like a normal strawberry milkshake. The nachos were a good size though and wasn't too bad. Overall, the decor inside was cool and it was a decent crowd. It got let down by the loud music blaring so loud, I couldn't hear my sis speak and barely myself! We went here last night to celebrate my friend getting a long term job. They have about 6 hotdogs that you can get on the $1 Tuesday menu deal. I had two of the fiery texan ones. Which weren't fiery. But were yummy non the less! Great band was on, we sung along and had a jolly good time. And I'm a total fan of the guys working there. They were all covered in some amazing ink and had me oggling them all night like a sex starved woman (my partner found this behaviour highly amusing) - The food comes out pretty quickly once you order it, but just be aware that it can take up to a good 20 minutes to try to order anything at the bar. Even a drink seems to take forever and this was after the huge rush has passed and the bar was looking not as crowded. Otherwise job well done on the place. Ah the Soda Factory. TBH I am getting a little over the whole secret bar thing, but, well, it is still kinda cool. We rocked in on a Friday night and the place was standing room only, which is a bit of a drag considering there isn't really anywhere to stand. The seating is nice, olde worlde type wing backs and french imitation and so on, but seemed to be all either booked or bagsed, despite many empty seats. One of my pet hates is bookings in bars like this - be there or be square!! And bagsing ten chairs when there is only three of you - poor form IMHO. So obligatory drink and then off.. by the time we left a queue had formed, so not really very secret. It all seemed very nice but perching n the edge of the stage was a drag, so we did not linger. read more

The security guards are the first people you meet before you go in. So technically they are the first impression and representation of The Soda Factory. There's one security guard, Diego and let me put this in the most simple way. Diego is like a stain on a beautiful canvas. Wow, what a cool bar with cool music and awesome drinks and vibes. But Diego was unprofessional and arrogant! Hence, for such an awesome place, Diego ruined vibes. He is the stain. Get him out of there. He's an embarrassment to represent such a cool place. If Diego wasn't there, I would have given this 5 stars. read more

I've been wanting to hit this place up for yonks but everytime i have the lines have been way to long or it's just been way to busy nights to go check it out haha. But have always heard from every One who have been that food is American goodness and the inside Decor is homely and keeps you at ease :D! My American Friend on a 1 year working visa came down from the North Coast on a suprise visit to Sydney for 4 days so i thought it was nore than convenient to make it my priority to hit this place up :)!! We ended up going on a monday not sure how busy it was going to be but made a booking for 5:30pm anyways :). To my suprise Monday was very mellow and a peaceful :), was trucked with the secret looking sliding door oyt the front though lol.. waited for 20 mins before figuring it out. Ordered beers and Rekorderlig cider :D. Mondays are half priced sides. I ordered the hone made slaw which was average, mac n cheese which i loved, mac n cheese spring roll which was different and delicous lol, curly fries were bomb, 4 southern style crispy chicken delcious :), tempura battered onion rings were so good haha, then had an al copone hor dog which was nice but the marinara sauce made it to soggy. $1 hot dogs on a Tuesday night. No one going to complain about that. But, you are required to get drinks too if you're ordering hot dogs. I wish I could love the hot dogs but honestly, coming from the city that never sleeps? Our dirty water hot dogs just rock this world. The beer selection is your typical American selection (well duh! it's an American bar after all). But $9 for PBR? That's kind of outrageous to me? NONE THE LESS, I LOVE the atmosphere and I love the decor and overall just would come here simply because it's got some cool peoples, cool live music, and cool good ole fashion fun :) Be mindful, on Tuesday it seems like people are rude and just unpleasant with trying to find a seat. STAND YOUR GROUND, don't let some punks ruin your night. It's a bar, have a good time, make some new friends. read more

It was late .... Joey once again dragged into another establishment against his will or interest. In the end was ok .... I was tired .... the bar was 3 deep ... i was sleepy ..... good thing the lack of air conditioning and extremely loud music kept me awake. A good place to hang if you want to dance & hang with friends. read more

Firstly- it's a hidden bar, but one that is reasonably easy to find when you know the street number. Great American theme, with soda floats (both virgin and spiked) and hot dogs. $10 hot dogs were great, and good value for the size and quality. Service at 9pm on Saturday was fast for both drinks and food. Music noise was TERRIBLE. It was more of a club than a bar-I was dizzy after I left as my ears adjusted. But the music was great. Not a good bar for talking- or reading- it was too dark to read the menu. Even at the bar, we had to use a mobile phone. Great beers available. Again, be warned, at about 10pm the tables and chairs disappear and the people are crammed in. There were also issues with people who were absolutely plastered which the bouncers seemed to ignore and the barmen just kept on serving. I loved this place, but the music was enough to drive it down from a five for me. read more

Awesome place with amazing specials. From $1 hot dogs on Tuesdays to $1 wings on Wednesdays, the ambiance is bumping with great music or live entertainment. It gets busy so you may have to be crafty with seating. We found a comfy chair and a metal chair and used a decorative speaker on the stage area as a table. This place is also fun on the weekends for drinks and dancing but again...expect a wait and I think a cover fee after a certain time. I didn't really like the wings but the $1 hot dogs were pretty good, especially the fried chicken one. I have heard that the cheeseburger spring rolls are great and on Thursdays they have a $10 basket of chicken which is enough for about 3-4 people. read more
