My boyfriend was in town and needed a haircut. Very simple just a buzz on his head and his beard groomed up. In the past, he had tried a few places around and was not satisfied as he was when he walked out of Mr. L's. He called ahead and they were able to take him right away. Came by here after work for the first time to have my undercut trimmed/ touched up. They took me as a walk in, very quick, love how it came out and the older gent that did my hair was so sweet! I didn't catch his name but he's pictured a few comments below cutting a kids hair. An old-school barber shop. It has the feel of an old bar where all the old-timers go to pass time. We love Sue who's there on Fridays and Saturdays. She does fabulous cuts and bakes delicious cakes and cookies. I always look forward to when my fiance needs his hair cut because I know that it'll be cookie time for me. They also often have other refreshments to offer (eggnog for this time of year, wine for other days). Prices are rock bottom cheap ($13). Contrary to Scott G's experience, I had a great haircut on a Wednesday night from Dana. I went at that time really based on curiosity after reading his review -- how bad could the "Wednesday Girl" be? Or maybe she would be so rude and unprofessional that the haircut would be a complete train-wreck? At least the latter would make for a good story at the bar with my buds. I had to go see for my self. I went in feeling like an investigative reporter, and even asked her if she was the Wednesday Girl from the yelp reviews after sitting down in the chair. We shared a laugh and she totally admitted it was her -- she told me she felt bad that the guy had a bad experience. As for me, my time with Dana was great, and the conversation was very enjoyable. She was a skilled barber, friendly, hospitable, and in the end I received a sharp affordable haircut. I will be a return customer of her's for certain. Scott was right though, the TV was really loud -- "NCIS" or something. At that volume, I would've preferred reruns of something with a laugh-track... like "Friends". Great old school barber with outstanding skills. "Mr. L" is known as "Louie" among patrons. He knows how to pull off a nice fade and can work a pair scissors*. I have another barber whom I show loyalty to... BUT if he's not available, then Louie is my go-to neighborhood barber. One anecdote to share - one time I didn't get to an ATM so I was dry on money. Mr L let me slide with $13 and said to take care of it next time. I'm not quite a regular.. so you can tell Louie is an all-around stand up guy. *Cutting with scissors: A crucial skill and trademark that is often neglected among the younger generation of barbers obsessed with buzzers. I'm not saying I'd travel 30+ minutes out of my way after a long day of work in NYC just to get my haircut here. I'm just saying, I was told to go to Mr. L's by a friend who does exactly that. I was skeptical that a simple, old-fashioned barbershop could possibly live up to the hype that comes along with a feature spot on an episode of "Cake Boss." My doubts were alleviated somewhat when I walked in and found a Tony Siragusa-designed man cave area, complete with a big screen TV, plenty of reading material, shoeshine chairs to sit in while you wait, and a table of complementary Italian pastries, breads, and wine. Of course, there was still the matter of the haircut, and I'm not lying when I say that Mr. L's gave me the best cut I've ever had. Regardless of who you sit down with, they've got scissor skills and personality in spades. They'll talk to you about anything, as if they're your own (big, loud, Italian) family. Even waiting there when it's packed on a Saturday afternoon is a great time. Friends and family of the shop walk in and out with food and gossip, everyone cracks jokes - it's the best of what a neighborhood barbershop should be. It was ok. That's really the truth. It wasn't a bad experience but it certainly wasn't great. I stopped by after class one day and was seated immediately. The man who cut my hair was very friendly and good at maintaining conversation so things weren't awkward. They did use a straight razor on the back of my neck too which was nice. My two biggest complaints are that they don't take credit cards and that I wasn't a huge fan of how it looked. I rarely carry cash on me anymore so I was lucky that I did have some on me. It would have gotten uncomfortable very quickly if I didn't. I also don't remember seeing a sign saying they don't take credit either. It's certainly possible I just missed it but I can't imagine it was that obvious. Secondly, the look just wasn't right. I have a very messy but short look for my haircut and tried to explain what I wanted to the guy right as I sat down. He kinda cut me off and said "I know what you mean, I'll give you the same thing you have now, just shorter." So maybe I should have been more assertive in describing what I wanted. Regardless, he didn't give me exactly what I had but shorter. It was very flat and very hard to style. read more

Set back from the craziness of Washington Street, Mr. L Hair Creations is one of the best barber shops I have ever been to. They do your old school cuts and shaves for cheap prices, something you cannot beat. I have gone here numerous times after finding the place on Yelp and reading the good reviews on it. I had found other places in Hoboken that do hair cuts, but then I also found they do waxes and tanning. I was like "what the hell is this?!" I wanted some place where I could go, get a haircut and feel like a guy still. Mr. L's does just that. Two great guys who work there, Nicky and Mr. L know what they are doing and have been doing it for years. They chat with you about anything under the sun the entire time your in there, and the topics are never boring. On top of that, they got a old big screen in the place that is usually playing episodes of The Soprano's. You really cant beat the old schoolness this place has. Overall I gave Mr. L's a four star rating because of the good cuts, cheap prices, friendly staff, and the convenience of being able to walk in the door and get a cut. I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking to avoid a salon scene. I will be hitting this place up every time I need a cut. read more

This is a great place, as long as you don't go on a Wednesday. There is only one woman working there and she is awful. The first time I had her, the haircut was decent , but I didn't wanna go back to her again. Months later, I went on a Wednesday again, forgetting that she worked then. I figured I'd give her another chance, plus I didn't have any other days when I could get it done. Big mistake. She rushed through it and it didn't come out well at all. She doesn't even wet your hair when she cuts it, so you get extremely itchy and have a ton of hair to wash out after. Then, she did the customary neck shave and I felt her nick me at the end. She powdered and brushed over it. Then, I get back and there's a good amount of blood from where she cut me and it was worse than I had thought. I will never go on a Wednesday again. read more

I'm always hesitant to say that a hair-cut place isn't good because I always assume I just didn't explain what I wanted well enough. I'm pretty sure I didn't ask for my hair to be cut unevenly though. Plus, even if I didn't explain it well enough, the woman doing it should have asked some questions, or at least used her own judgement to say that it didn't look right. I had the same barber for 27 years, and when he retired (at age 87) I was cut adrift. After several years of trying out places here and there, I found Mr. L's. Mr. L's is a real barbershop, with straight razor shaves, and reasonable prices. Nicky and Mr. L are both the best...I don't even have to tell them what I want anymore, they just know how to cut my hair. True barbers are a dying breed. I am just happy that I can go to Mr. L's every 3-4 weeks to come out looking great, and feeling refreshed. read more

I have been going here for a while now and have usually liked the place. In fact, I've always been pleased until tonight. Apparently all day Wednesday there is only one girl who works there, and I would recommend NEVER going to see her. She was blasting the show Friends and did not speak to me the entire time she cut my hair. About halfway through she stopped to check her iPhone and to message someone. When I get home I had to cut my hair myself to make up for how bad of a job she did cutting my hair. It is a shame that one person could ruin my impression of a business, but I would not go back there again after tonight. However, for anyone else, most of the people who work there are worth going to, just don't ever go on a Wednesday. read more

First time there and I just got a cut from Sue. I hadn't had a hair cut in quite a while and I let my hair grow out fairly long and needed it back to normal. Great for men and kids! My husband goes here and we started taking our kids. Sue and Nick do a great job on my son's short, straight hair. They don't have TVs but give kids dum dum lollipops (with parents permission), which does the trick to keep my son age 13mth still. He's over 2 now and we've been every two months and are always happy. Cost is $15 per child vs $25 at other kids salons. Open long hours and either Sue or Nick are always there. read more

Excellent old school barber shop that has been in Hoboken for almost 50 years, and I have been coming here since I stumbled in 20 years ago. The kind of place your grand dad and dad went to and you should too. I'll definitely be bringing my son there for his 1st cut. Louie, Tony and Nick know everyone and everything that happens in the town and most of norther NJ as well. You will get a education in Hoboken politics and life as well as a great haircut. You walk in and it feels like you're at your uncles house. Just a couple of great italian guys cutting hair. Not too much chatter (unless you want it!) and they get the job done quick and they do it well. I just went in with long hair and not a clue in the world what I wanted. Tony took care of me and gave me the best haircut I've ever had. Used a straight edge for my sideburns and neck, and cleaned up every hair on my head.
