The man behind the counter was so in character! Sadly, not all of the employees dress like this, but just that one experience was good enough for me. I'm sold! I will always stop by this place when I visit England! They have packaged candy as well as hand-made chocolates! Both of which are delicious! I was also happy to see that they had sugar-free chocolate. Some of my family members are diabetic, so I was looking for something they could enjoy too. Mr. Simms Olde Sweet Shoppe was perfect! Buttered brazils, strawberry Fizz Wizzes, humbugs of various stripes, liquorice is all its awful guises (I hated it) including the packet of sherbert with a liquorice stick inside like a small firework. Those flying-saucer sherbets in different art-deco colours; aniseeed balls, pear drops, barley sugar, sarsparilla, sherbert lemons. A treasure trove. Interestingly, most are still made in Scotland and the North of England. It's a labour of love by the owner, Judith Burnett, to keep each jar stocked. How lucky we are that she does.

They stock every kind of sweet imaginable from hotel chocolat style chocolate bars, bricks and truffles to popping candy, penny sweets, lollipops, boiled sweets, nougat, raisins... if it belongs in a sweet shop, you will find it here. There are often queues of children lurking around, eyes wide with pleasure at the vast shelves full of treats that await them! Such treats come at a price. I'm not sure whether I remember penny sweets as correctly being a penny when I was a child (i think some of them had migrated to two pence by then!) but it is a tad expensive. Anyway, the treats are tasty - just save your pennies before visiting!

The place was crowded with tourists (Surprise, surprise) but it doesn't matter. The staff were helpful and proactive at cutting the line down. After much deliberation, I ended up picking some Butter Fudge up just for the beautiful silver and blue tin. I can't wait to drop back in to collect more darling tins, foreign candies and souveneirs for home.
