I've never actually seen Mr Wood. But in all honesty he's probably too busy gallivanting unexplored worlds, digging up unknown creatures and hunting those long thought extinct. So yeah Mr Woods Fossils is the place that gets my overactive imagination going. All I want to do is lend my support to how cool this place is. It's where all the hip cats are at! Mr Wood sells a range of fossils. There are cheaper common fossils, the sort you might find at museums, geared toward the casual fossil shopper. Then there are sort of giant kraken heads and godzilla toes that cost a bit more, and clearly more for collectors. I expect this shop actually makes most of its money from ordering further from home and abroad, but that's no reason not enjoy a browse in this very different and really cool shop.

This place is awesome for those of you who are fans of dinosaurs and fossils such as myself(yes I am a geek and I'm proud). I bought a shark tooth (allegedly millions of years old although I somehow doubt it) pendant for myself and a friend and its great little old shop to have a wee look around. The prices are a bit high for some things, but it's still fun for the palaeontologist inside you!

Review Highlights - Mr Wood's Fossils

With its stock ranging from shark tooth necklaces to massive pieces of minerals, it's more like a museum than a store on the Grassmarket.

It's very small, but utterly brimming with stock. It makes me feel like I'm in someone's attic, it's very personal. The collection ranges from old 1920s pocket mirrors to beautifully binded books, with nouveau inspired flowers running up the spine. The woman stationed behind the desk is absolutely lovely, and although it is an intimate setting she leaves you free to browse without badgering you to buy. The brooch collections are surprisingly cheap and she has a box full of antique postcards. There's something melancholy about rooting through a box full of heartfelt scribblings from another time, but it is nevertheless interesting. For film makers and art projects at least the donated, personalised cards and monochrome photographs would come to a good use. A Pandora's box of yesterday's treasure that you would willingly open if you're into well preserved, pretty bygones.

Goodwins sell a mixture of both antique and new jewellery and so there is bound to be something in here to suit everyone's taste. They sell a vast range of beautiful contemporary jewellery, which is really expensive, but absolutely gorgeous. I came in here last year to look for a birthday present for myself and felt completely overwhelmed by all the huge selection of gifts available. I bought the most amazing silver bracelet, which was expensive, but so worth as it is of excellent quality and I wear it all the time. The staff in this store are always incredibly friendly and highly professional and are able to answer all of your questions. A truly wonderful jewellery store with gorgeous stock- can't wait till the day that I can afford their more expensive gifts!

Granted I've realized how small Edinburgh is, so to any passably active person it won't really make a difference. Palenque is a store for anyone who'd like their jewellery to have some personality! I think it's quite special because it manages to achieve this without being very expensive, or so cheap it breaks after a few hours (I've had this experience with quirky "bargains" before. They sell all sorts of pendants, necklaces, rings, earrings, bracelets etc with pearls, crystal, stone and enamel. I'm a big fan of the pendants, but I'm still frustrated at not having found the kind of ring I'm looking for i.e pretty, not the size of a golf ball etc.. Otherwise, they're lots of pieces I'd happily add to my wishlist. This store is a little smaller than the one on Rose Street, and they sometimes get different stock so it could be fun to compare.
