I was contacted today and owners representative of MRT and said sod has "always" been exempt from their coupons! I could not find a thing to support that statement on the coupon in question. He further stated I was not "forced" to purchase the sod and I could bring it back and get a full refund! Great idea!!!!!! This was the only time I had ever visited MRT in Port Charlotte. I was looking for bushes to attract butterflies and found some at MRT. Because the plants are babies I read the dimension information and looked at the mature plant on the card. I really loved the bush, so I purchased many to plant along the back of my house. Once I laid them out according to the placement directions and I realized l would need four more bushes. So I went back to MRT and showed them the card from the bushes I bought. They said they would need to order them. Several weeks later they called to tell me my bushes were in and I could pick them up. So I went over and they did not look just like the bushes I had purchased. Close, but not the same. They looked up what I had purchased and told me these were the same and I also still had the card and it was the same as on these plants. Well they are the experts. So I brought them home and planted them. A year later I now have a row of butterfly attracting bushes along the back of my house. Half is the bush I picked out and half is not. Am I angry? You bet. MRT has an incredible selection of plants, lawn/patio decor, and hardware items. The quality and variety of the plants is far better than at your average big chain hardware store. I recently went in looking for a new house plant, and found this fiddle leaf fig tree. The crown jewel of MRT is their pottery section. They have a massive inventory of all different sizes and shades of glazed pottery. I've been buying pottery from MRT for years, and I always manage to find a beautiful new piece each time I shop. No matter what you come in for, you're probably going to leave with more. The prices are good, and the staff is friendly and efficient. Love this place! read more

Off we went to MRT. It was like the sun was shining in there. We were greater with smiles and disbelief. The rain was heavy and we were there on our mission. We met Marcus who was our tree Angel. We told him about why we needed this special tree. He went out in the rain and brought to us the most beautiful special tree. Just like our friend who passed. It was called a PINK POWDER PUFF tree. I recently purchaded a gardenia plant, and we received good advice for fertilizing the new shrub. I had inquired before about a drought resistant garden. I spoke with the head gardener who advised against new plantings without having a water system in place. I apreciate the integrity of this man! It has made me a loyal, returning customer. Love this store! So much fun to shop. Love the large selection of pots, plants and other fun items for your yard. One small, but mighty, irritant is the use of the cheapest and most stubborn glue they use for the price tags. Please stop using those cheap stickers. The end result is a delay in being able to fill the beautiful pots with beautiful flowers because one has to spend at minimum, 15 minutes of 100% full physical and mental dedication in removing each sticker. A combination of white vinegar, water and grit will eventually win against the dreaded glue. read more

I agree with all the other negative reviews; terrible customer service to the point of being rude. I did not have the receipt, although the purchase was found in their system. I tried to get a refund or exchange or even a store credit for a bag of plant food loaded with bugs. They could not careless, basically I was told to get lost. I was disappointed in the new MRT/ACE concept. It now seems more like a hardware store and less like a nursery and landscape company. I would drive from Englewood to select my plants several times a year. Now I will purchase plants at one of Englewood's other nurseries. MRT no longer is a step above them so why drive further. We experienced shady business practices when we tried to use their landscaping service. They required a deposit in order to give us an estimate. They said the deposit would apply to the work done, period. That's the only reason we paid $100 deposit and we were very clear about our budget for the job being under $700. Well the estimate came in over $1000, we tried to work with them by reducing the job to fit our budget and THEN they told us that the deposit would only be applied if the job was $1000 or more. That is a rip off and nothing was ever said about this to us in advance. We never got a refund or any work done by them. Beware. read more

Store only review. I was impressed when we first got there - it looked like a quality store and their plants in the nursery all seemed healthy and well cared for. We were there to pick up some herbs and went for two different kinds of potted basil. We did look around at one point for someone to answer a question, but we didn't see anyone available to help us, so we proceeded to check out. At the checkout we needed a bag so the plastic pots wouldn't leak and leave a mark in the car. The boy working nonchalantly stuffed the two pots into one bag and I heard a snap. As we walked out to the car I inspected the plants and, sure enough, he broke off a huge branch from one of the plants. I took it back and we were able to pick out another plant. I know he wasn't trying to hurt the plant, but he should have been more careful. I'd like to give the place 3 stars, but it looks like this visit only got 2. read more

This is not just a garden center! Was pleasantly surprised by all the decorating items. The aisles go on for ever! Very reasonable. Great selection on plants as well. All healthy and beautiful. However, although our cashier was sweet and friendly, the floor staff was not! Did not want to answer any questions and they charge. $7.00 to tranplant a plant into one of the beautiful and expensive pots they sell. Not very courteous! read more

I was impressed by MRT's vast selection of trees, plants, pots and flowers. I hired them to do my landscaping which came out well. They are pricey but did a good job. You'd think I'd be giving them a 5 star rating, right? I'm giving them 1 star and that's because I had to pay for work that THEY had done incorrectly. I went back and forth with them questioning the charges. Rob, the head of landscaping called me to explain the charges. When I told him that I still did not understand, his reply to me was " everybody else does". I was floored by his arrogant and condescending response. If you choose to do business with them be aware that you'll pay more and will be treated poorly if you question them. read more

Was excited to visit MRT, Wednesday, Nov.3rd. Walked all around picked out some nice pots and plants. Saw some citrus, lime and lemon trees, but they had a sign "Citrus not for sale". I saw a worker with a MRT tee shirt (she wasn't with anyone) so I asked "excuse me, I see that the citrus is not for sale. Do you have some that IS for sale?" As she walked by me she said, rudely, NO. I asked if they were getting any in, again, as she hurried by she said NO. I abandoned my pots and plants and left, never to return. I had two different trees that didn't do well---even tho they planted them-- and even though I stayed in contact through email, pictures, return visits and phone calls I still was " blamed" for not knowing how to care for them. I called him and Joe came down and looked at the problem. He came back today and took care of the biggest part and will return on Monday to finish up the rest. Before you consider using MRT for landscape design consider our bitter experience. We spent close to $40,000 for trees bushes, design and outdoor lighting. One of the trees planted (we were told by three other landscapers) should never have been planted in the first place, as it cannot stand cold. It, along with everything else was planted in the coldest day of the year. The tree died. We were told the "guarantee" covered only the tree and not the re-planting. MRT wanted twice the money a new tree from two other landscaping companies--planted--would have cost. Three of the trees in the front were planted in three foot mounds. Why? They look stupid that way. They can't get water to their elevated roots and are dying. Why plant them like that? They will also have to be replaced. Other small bushes, planted in the coldest day of the year also died. Two other trees are certainly not thriving after the bitter cold. Will they survive? Other plantings certainly are not thriving. We won't call MRT to replace them as we can't afford the free replacements. My advice--go somewhere else to have your landscaping done. read more

bought a house couple blocks away in south Venice, get a welcome to neighborhood 10% coupon ACE at MRT. Did not realize an ACE Hardware was there thought pretty convenient. I give coupon to my wife to get something and check out and they say we are not in there data base even though my name is on coupon and do not except. The 10% off is not that big a deal but they mailed it spent on advertising trying to get new clients and this is reception, so not the discount but poor service and why waist a lot of money mailing these things with the persons name on. This ACE is not the place, just drove 3 minutes up street to Home Depot no hassle. read more

MRT's Landscaping service was very unsatisfactory. They never called me back when they said they would. They never confirmed the day to actually do the work. I took the day off. Had to call to see if they were, in fact, coming. As an afterthought, he said he'd come that afternoon. Two hours late, he came to plant but said six of my plants had been stolen. They planted the rest per the drawing but were very grumbly and complaining. When I asked if there was a problem, they said the job was too hard because there was weed barrier in the bed and should have charged me more. They told me that they were very busy so they'd try to get back when they got a new shipment of my missing plants. I just asked that I be there and could they set it up a day ahead. Weeks passed. I called to check the status. A few hours later they called to say they'd come in an hour. I said I was already at work and could it be the next day. He said no, hung up on me, and I've never heard from them again. I attempted to lodge a complaint with the owner of MRT and never heard back from him either. Do NOT use this company. read more

Wow! Had I read the reviews on this place I would have saved a lot of money and a whole lot of grief and aggravation! It seems like the vast majority of responses to their so-called service is on the second page of reviews, and here you'll find some very telling information! This place and their management is a real bad experience, and it would be wise for anyone even thinking of purchasing plants from the store to think twice. With SO many complaints posted it's difficult to believe that the customers are all wrong. I made the mistake of purchasing about $900.00+ from these people, but that ONE experience was enough! My complaint is that they're very, very nice when they sell you something, BUT, come back with the problem and they don't even know you. They are way beyond rude and inconsiderate, and could care less. I will never spend another dollar with these people and hasten to add that others have expressed the same feelings.
