Delicious food, reasonable prices, good service, friendly and attentive stuff. Lamb tikka masala was particularly tasty.

I was only able to get tickets for the AFH for a 6:15 p.m. tour, meaning we got finished around 8 p.m. Hence, this became our late dinner option that day. I wasn't sure how busy they would be, but I guess we arrived late enough so that they had a few tables available. The restaurant is located on a fairly busy street (served by trams, which we later used to get back to the Central Station area). It is only a few doors down from one of the canals. The menu indicated that they had been in business since the 1980s, so they must be doing something right. As an added reference point, they are about a 20-minute walk from the Central Station. We arrived and were greeted and shown to a table near the front of the restaurant. It seemed to extend quite a way back, but I didn't have a reason to venture further in. Our server was friendly and provided menus and took our drink orders. I know they had wine but I don't know if they had a full bar. There were certainly several tables of Americans and Brits who appeared to be well served in that regard, so maybe there was a bar... The menu was fairly extensive, with an appreciable overlap with dishes we were familiar with from Indian places in the U.S. We all found something to our taste. I think we ended up with a couple of vegetarian curry dishes and one that was chicken-based. We also got naan and rice. Everything was good, and given the lateness of dinner (for us), we were hungry. When the food came out, they also brought one warming stand per dish. This was something new that we encountered at a couple of restaurants on this trip. This is probably more relevant in the winter months, but it kept the food hot. I'd likely return here for another meal if I'm ever back in Amsterdam.

Very elegant interior, with tasteful decor, soft ambient music, best for couples, but also able to accommodate larger groups with a reservation. We were seated right away and greeted by our server Sona, very gracious, patient, attentive, and professional. She asked about any allergies and then took our order of chicken tikka saag and chicken tikka masala, both medium spiciness (also asked if we would like Indian medium or European medium--we chose Indian medium). These entrees come with rice, and we also ordered garlic naan. Immediately, they brought chilled bottled water and complimentary thin crispy cracker like bread with red sauce and green sauce (I didn't catch the names). I liked the green sauce better (mint), and my husband liked the red one better (tamarind)--both were lovely. About 20 minutes later, our entrees arrived piping hot, and cooked to perfection! Tender chicken, savory rich flavors in the masala and saag, both the right level of spicy for us! Glad we had enough rice and water! Excellent restaurant --Sona was amazing and the whole experience delicious!

The lamb saag was absolutely delicious and the salad was quite good as well. We weren't huge fans of the mixed tandoori plate, the flavors weren't very developed and it needed more spice, but we were overall satisfied with the service and the dining experience. It appears from the other reviews that the momos are one of the best things to eat here, but I personally couldn't because I am gluten free, so considering how delicious the saag is, I bet dishes other than the tandoori are very delicious as well! Overall I would recommend this place.

You know they are 'authentic' in intent…read morebecause the owners actually still talk to each other in Hindi, yet being very fluent in the Dutch language. This reflects in the quality of food - you can get some very authentic and spicy options along with dishes 'blanded' down for the local flavor. Located in one of the nicest parts of the city (although there is a Subway that just opened up here), dining at Balraj is part of an even more extensive experience, that could include the best ice cream in town, nearby. One thing is for sure, you would be avoiding the throngs of aimless tourists and mind-numbing crowd noise. The prices are very attractive. Every dish comes with a serving of rice, lentils, an accompaniment in the form of a curry dish, and a 'roti'. It's a party in your tummy! Being a vegetarian, I still suffer from the lack of options, but that isn't generally a problem unless I aspire to dine here more than once a month. Even then, they have specials listed on the menu, which I assume are experiments that have the potential to be made part of the regular menu, if successful. One bit of advice - when in doubt about a dish, just ask. India has diversity in dish ingredients depending on region, even if they sound the same. So, something from the South could be a whole lot spicier than a dish with the same name from Central India. While not the most upscale Indian restaurant in the city, Balraj is quickly becoming my goto restaurant for national flavor. Give it a go, and check out the great tastes for yourself!

I had no idea I needed Nepalese/Tibetan/Indian food in my life. The smell as you walk into the restaurant immediately grabs your attention and lets you know you're in for an experience. If k ever find myself in Amsterdam again I will undoubtedly be coming back to Sherpa.

Sherpa also has a Tibetan and Nepalese twist, and the menu had so many new-to-me items, including Momos. The restaurant smells amazing when you walk in, so I knew that choosing an entrée would be difficult, especially with so many vegetarian options. I ordered the Tshel momos, which are stuffed with minced vegetables and steamed. They were served with a homemade tomato sauce that, while cold, complimented them perfectly. They were not spicy, which was different for me since I usually go for some form of noodles and love at least medium spice. My husband had the Yeti's Food- Stir fried noodles with boneless chicken and vegetables with Himalayan herbs. He usually goes for curry, so this was a change for him as well. Both of us really enjoyed our meals and are glad we went with something we've never seen in the US before. The service was great, and the servers brought out fresh papadam, raita, and some other condiments to try as soon as we were seated. They also kept our waters and my husband's beer filled and brought us Wilhelmina mints at the end of our meal with the check. Those mints are amazing and so much better than the US post-meal mints, and I had to buy a large package to take home! If you're looking for a culinary adventure in Amsterdam that is NOT Dutch food, check out Sherpa. Bonus points for being an easy walk from the museum district.
