Brand new academy in the area... still haven't gotten the sign-up quite yet so you'll be looking…read morefor a tae kwon do sign as it is a split building where the left will be taekwondo and on the other side of the wall, it will be Jiujitsu. Head coach Ighor is an absolute gem to the sport. He is owner and operator and has many years under his belt and know him through my academy up in Portland. I've never heard bad things about him or his JiuJitsu. He has mounds of experience and more time and years on the mat than most people in this area. The kids program is absolutely already kicking off and is the place to be if you want to enrich your kids value in the sport . Now there's also plenty of room for hobbies and people looking to just have fun and if that turns into something more, this is a place you'll wanna be. Unfortunately, I am about 45 minutes from it so I'm only able to visit on occasion to come to an open Mat and roll around with some new people. Everyone was super nice and welcoming. Everything is absolutely clean and meticulously taken care of. If you know anything about Jiujitsu or wrestling, you'll know that cleanliness is almost tied with expertise and knowledge in criteria when looking for a spot. It might be a new name, but it's not a new person and if you look into him, you'll see that his associations are with many well-known associations and branching out into something new to bring new blood and new life to a very traditional sport. I wish I had more photos to post but sometimes when you're getting choked out or dropping someone into a sick back take, you don't have time for photos. Check out their online handles and see what they're up to stop in and try a class, men women children everyone's welcome here. And as a man is late 30s that recently started the sport. I will tell you once you dig in it's absolutely worth the time.

in town to train for a few days. everyone was more than welcoming and the training was top notch…read more if we lived in the area this is where my son would train.

I really didn't know what I was missing until I started coming to Portland Thai Boxing. I have been…read moreon and off studying different martial arts styles for most of my life. I have taken Kempo Karate, Kung-Fu at a couple of different places and Chinese San Shou kickboxing. I started at PTB thinking I knew a thing or two but quickly found out that despite a black-belt in karate and about 8 combined years of training, I have no idea how to fight. Other schools, even the kickboxing school I went to previously, are so nervous about students engaging each other one-on-one that they very rarely allow it. As a consequence you never learn to defend and counter when face-to-face with a real person. At Portland Thai Boxing I have only spent time learning skills that are applicable in a real fight situation. How to punch and kick in combination, how to adjust distance and timing and most valuable of all, how to see, read and react to an opponent. It sounds basic, like the kind of thing you'd expect to learn at any martial arts school, but in my experience it is not. I want to stress, that even though you will do one-on-one work with another student, that this is a very safe and fun environment to do so. Everyone I have worked with has adjusted to take into account that I am a beginner at this. The most experienced fighters go slow, make their strikes obvious so I can see how to block or evade and give advice on how to do it better. Kru Wijers makes sure that everyone stays under control and stresses that we are there to help each other learn, not to prove we are better. If someone is going too hard he will remove them from the class. There are men and women of all ages in my class and classes solely for women as well. This is a beginner's perspective on the Thai boxing classes. There are people at this gym who train for MMA fights and serious, full-contact, knock-out Muay Thai. I have no intention to do that myself and that is perfectly fine here, but having that level of training going on, and working side-by-side with dedicated athletes raises the bar for everybody. I can't recommend this place enough.

i feel sad to leave a poor review of a place i've never been, but therein lies the problem. i want…read moreto learn Muay Thai, and i've been checking out places all around town, looking for what "feels like home" to me. i'm also not experienced in any fighting arts, so it felt important to me to try several places. sadly, it seems classes at Portland Thai Boxing are so full or overflowing they can't manage to get back to me, or they don't care/don't want my business for some other reason. i've tried emailing them twice (one week apart) from different email addresses. i've also tried DM'ing them on Instagram. they seem to have the time to make IG posts and stories but haven't bothered responding to my DM. i would have jumped at the chance to sign up for their unique 6-week fundamentals program. this place was recommended to me by a friend who is a local fighter and very passionate about it, but i guess i'll never know.
