The scenery to knock your socks off

Amazing hike, with incredible views along the way. I read in another review that this could be broke up into two hikes. One to the Waterfall and another to the summit. The two and half miles to the Waterfall's is fairly easy with level for the most part. With plenty of shade on the lower part of the hike. After the Waterfall it becomes more challenging but very doable. And the views at the summit are so worth it. I'd highly recommend this hike, loved it.

I did this hike in early October so it was pretty cold and windy with some random ice in some water streams. It's a decent hike that'll take you about 4-5 hours. It sort of isn't clear where the summit of Mt. Rose is--I ended up following signs to a different peak (which added 1.5 miles) to get a good view of Lake Tahoe (was this actually the top of Mt. Rose? Who knows). Even then though, the view wasn't that majestic (compared to other views I've had of Tahoe) and the "summit" wasn't well defined. I wish there was a big sign that said you're at the summit of something that also states the elevation. I like it when the tops of mountains have wind shelters too. So, this is a definitely a moderate difficulty hike worth doing once, but honestly I wasn't that impressed. We should've done Mt. Tallac instead! Oh well, can't complain about getting good exercise on a nice Saturday morning.

With nearly double the amount of snow this year in Lake Tahoe region we were lucky enough to snowshoe here! Stunning! Too bad it was foggy we couldn't see the lake.

    What trail would you like???

Darn me for thinking I could hike this trail with running shoes! Hey now, it was a very last minute idea. This place is great for snowshoeing. We saw lots a folks with their snowboards too! Restrooms are closed during winter.

It is next to, looking down and over Mt Rose ski resort, the Reno valley and Lake Tahoe. This is a challenging hike that I did in about 4 1/2 hours, but you can definately make it longer. Once at the top, at 10, 778 ft, there are just the most incredible views! Totally worth the huffing and puffing of hiking at that altitude. There is a great trailhead at the top of 431 up north of Incline Village with restrooms and educational boards all over. ( It also doubles as a mini snow park here in the winter. )So you can't miss it! It also is part of the Tahoe Rim trail until you split off to go up Mt Rose. Strenuous hike? yes,, worth it? yes,...highly recommend it? DEFINATELY!

We had such a great time there. The trail is dog friendly and kid friendly. The slopes were of the right angles for sledding or just climbing up and down. We will visit again.

I had previously purchased an annual pass through Nevada Parks for $30 (Senior Rate). The parking area, visitor's center, picnic areas, and large greenbelt are all well maintained, pretty, and with a great view of the Lake. I was most recently here for a well-executed and family/dog friendly Day 2 Rosh Hashana service led by Temple Bat Yam (Stateline). That included a interactive and leafy 2.1 walk around the lake on a almost perfect day. Spirituality experienced outside is a special thing, and meeting a few new friends along the way was a welcome bonus. Note: Yelp also has a Spooner Lake Trailhead listing, which overlaps with this one.

I wasn't really sure where the trail for Spooner Lake loop was so I parked and we wandered a bit til we saw the map and a little sign. Followed it down to the water... and then from there the trail was clear. We did the lake loop trail... I think it's about 2.5 miles... with all our walking around we did 3. It's a great trail! Lots of shade with a little bit of elevation change.... not too much tho. There was 1 big hill but that's it. So, a really nice easy trail around the lake. If I lived in the area, I would get an annual pass and come here regularly to do this loop and explore the other trails that connect to this one. It's a state park so $10 fee... we wanted to buy an Annual Pass good for all state parks but they were sold out.

We added some extra distance at the end by hiking to the Marlette Peak Campground to stay for the night. From the parking lot to the campground was about 7 miles each way. The trail itself was well-maintained, moderate difficulty, and had everything you'd want in a good hike! Solid trail conditions. Beautiful mountain and lake views. Some sections of wildflowers. A good amount of sun but also some shaded parts. Gradual incline that never felt super steep, so the elevation gain felt manageable. We saw people hiking as well as mountain biking on this trail. There are several sections of aspen trees along this hike, so it's a great one to come back and do in the fall once the leaves turn yellow. The trailhead area has great facilities, the bathrooms were clean and there is ample parking. The park rangers I spoke to were friendly and helpful. Fun fact: The Flume Trail got its name because Marlette and the tributaries that feed it were part of a log flume system to carry logs used to build our region all the way down from as far as Virginia City! Marlette has a short fishing season, but people say it's grand if you make the trip. Of course you need to hike in to have that experience. This is definitely a trail worth checking out in our area!
