I'd like to start this review by listing some positives I've gained from my experience at MUD. I learned a lot about sanitation, cleanliness, and etiquette practices of makeup artistry, which is important for setting yourself apart as a professional makeup artist. I also learned plenty of helpful beauty makeup techniques, which confirmed my belief that a professional education is superior to YouTube and TikTok tutorials. Nothing can beat a hands-on education from people who have actually worked in the industry. I'm also grateful to have learned about taxes as a freelancer and union requirements for makeup artists. But unfortunately, this is where my praise ends. I was incredibly hopeful that I'd have a positive and fun time at this school, but sadly, it was the complete opposite. Most of the girls went out of their way to ostracize, bully, and withhold support from me. There was someone in particular who hated me from Day 1, despite knowing nothing about me and having never spoken to me before. At first, I tried to ignore it and act like it didn't bother me. I was optimistic that things would get better, so I chose not to advocate for myself. But everything only got worse over time. I was gossiped and made fun of when I wasn't around, and there were lies and an entire smear campaign spread about me. It got so bad that students in other classes and graduates working at the MUD Shop, who were once kind to me, changed their entire attitude towards me out of nowhere, all at once. To this day, I still don't know what I said or did to deserve this treatment.  Most forms of diversity were welcomed at school, but neurodiversity wasn't one of them. Other students could sense that I was different, and these differences were met with repulsion and fear. When there weren't any teachers around, everyone would fall silent whenever I entered the room. I was fully aware of the way girls would look at each other and laugh when I said something, or the awkward silence that followed when I tried joining in a group conversation. I noticed how most of the girls complimented everyone's makeup looks but withheld any sort of praise from mine. By the time I tried telling the staff about my concerns, the damage was irreparable, and it was already too late. I mean no disrespect towards any of the teachers, and I truly believe they had good intentions and tried the best they could. Even so, I couldn't help but feel like my concerns weren't taken as seriously as they should, especially since the teachers had nothing but positive experiences with the girls bullying me.  Sadly, it takes a lot more than skill to succeed in this industry. Being well-liked by others in school plays a huge role in what career and portfolio-building opportunities are available to you as a makeup artist. My experiences have negatively impacted my ability to do both. Not only that, but the way I view makeup has drastically changed since before I attended MUD. I don't have the same passion, love, and motivation for makeup artistry like I once did. I started school with the expectation that I was going to make friends and have a lot of fun. Instead, I relived the worst parts of my high school days.  Looking back, I wish I had dropped out at the first sign of bullying and gotten a refund for my tuition, especially since it's so expensive. I'm currently attending another school in a different field. My positive experience there contrasts heavily with the one at MUD, and this realization is very painful for me. I'm not writing this review to garner sympathy, but to spread awareness about my experience at school because it matters. I want to save aspiring makeup artists the trouble, money, and heartache of going through anything similar to what I did. If you are autistic or a neurodivergent person, I highly suggest going to another makeup school. It isn't worth wasting your money and losing your love for makeup. read more

When my daughter first mentioned that she'd like to attend make-up school I was leery. It's an artsy school. I wondered, would they actually teach her something or would they artfully make what used to be my money theirs, leaving her not much more skilled than when she entered? Well, I was pleasantly surprised. In their Beauty segment, they demand that students be on time, professionally dressed, properly geared and ready to go when class begins. As part of the instruction, they discussed invoicing and tax issues and required, before the completion of the segment, that each student have their own website up and ready to promote their newly developed skills. For their Special Effects segment the dress code's relaxed but students are required to learn skills handling foam, fiberglass, plaster, paints, and flammable resins. And if you're disruptive or don't take the program seriously or refuse to arrive on time and ready to go you may be expelled without a refund as one of my daughter's classmates was. During a time when demanding petty, stupid accommodation seems to be in vogue I love that the program demands a little something from the students and in the most extreme situations will send them home if they refuse to behave like adults. And if the cost seems too much, scholarships are available. We got one from Mike Rowe! read more

This school prioritizes maintaining a very specific aesthetic above all else--regardless of your financial situation or mental bandwidth at any given time. If you can't conform to their expectations, you're left vulnerable to bullying, exclusion, and other toxic behaviors from both staff and students. Should you speak up, you're likely to be cast as the problem--just to preserve the school's carefully curated image of exclusivity and superiority. It's disheartening to consider what this attitude is doing to the industry at large. For me, it's become motivation to pursue an independent path--ironically, something they often actively discourage to keep you dependent and doubting yourself. read more

Yesterday I went to MUA for the first time. My make up artist was Mia. Mia very so professional and kind. She was very friendly throughout the process. She was already prepared for the make up style I was asking for but consulted me while making choices. I enjoyed the whole process. It was a better experience than I had at Mac or Sephora. Plus it's very reasonably priced. I recommend to everyone to give it a try and I don't plan on going anywhere else for make up. read more

This school needs a serious overhaul in how it deals with students who are neurodivergent, or those who may otherwise find difficulty utilizing the educational resources provided, as those resources are clearly constructed with a neurotypical perspective in mind and not much else. If this structure negatively impacts your education, it will be seen as not only your fault but also as an example of "letting insecurities get the better of you" according to Lisa, one of the main instructors for their introductory Beauty 101 class, and therefore the person introducing so many into the industry. This mentality carries over into how instructors and students will treat you on a personal level, seeing you as someone who doesn't care as much or who isn't as capable, rather than someone working with a different set of skills that may need certain accommodations in order to fully flourish. My experiences were invalidated upon bringing these concerns to the VP, and I was told that it would be my responsibility to change the perceptions of those who had upset me, because I had expressed being hurt by their actions and words rather than simply allowing the mistreatment to continue unchecked. He also made sure to let me know that other members of management held similar views. The words "man up" were used in that same meeting to describe my issues with overstimulation due to bright lights and loud noise, even though the context in which I brought that up was a several-hours-long demonstration which Gil refused to either provide a break for or ask students who were speaking loudly throughout to quiet down, even though this is what was making it difficult for me and others to concentrate and take in all of that new information even though we only wanted to do our best. I could get into the countless other examples of similar prejudices being displayed, including the CEO walking away from me mid-sentence because I was struggling to get my words out, but I think my point has been made. read more

When I finally decided to pursue my dream as a makeup artist I wanted professional training to help me hone my natural talent. I researched other schools but upon attending Mud's open house, I met some of the instructors, admissions and career services department. After speaking with several staff and touring the school I felt in my heart that Makeup Designory was what I had been searching for. I wanted a supportive, professional and driven environment and Make-Up Designory is exactly that. I took the multi-media program and I am so grateful for every class I had. I have learned so much about technique, makeup products, time management, organization, onset etiquette, effort and discipline. I was pushed out of my comfort zone to really start the transformation as a professional artist. I gave this school everything I had and found how to dig even deeper. Please note: the effort you put in is crucial to your success in this school and also in your career. This school is not only wonderful during the time I was a student but also now as an alumni. I get to go back to pro makeup artist lectures, use the career services portal, attend workshops and apply for jobs/gigs. The entire staff at Mud truly cares about their students and their success. I went to MUD in 2018 and I was already working as a makeup artist, but had to get my degree. So I took the 6month program. Horrible teachers except for one. His name was Sean he was an amazing teacher and super nice! The other teachers were rude and inappropriate!! They chose there favorite people and only helped them out. From my experience going there I thought it would be fun and great but wow I was mistaken. I got bullied, I got bullied by the teachers. I got depressed.. I was not helped what so ever, I got no help finding jobs at the time. I didn't even learn anything from that school. I learned online YouTube and I got better and better. The amount of money they ask for is horrible. I'm still paying off my debt. For makeup school!!! Hahaha like come on. But I do wanna thank them for one thing one teacher a women said I will not go anywhere with these "instagram makeup" I thank her because without her I wouldn't have made myself work harder each day to get celebrities makeup and got into an amazing team for makeup. And looking back at how she does makeup wow I just feel sorry for her. But I am very blessed to get to where I am now in makeup and working with amazing talented people. I'm finally writing this review and will be posting everywhere! I REGRET GOING TO MUD !!! And let me tell you this DO NOT USE MUDS MAKEUP PRODUCTS!!! They are horrible! I'm writing this from the 'customer' side, not as a Student, but as someone who needed a professional job for a special professional Halloween event this year. We had to find someone to do the make-up of a TV Personality as well as their assistant for a charitable event for LA Children's Hospital. We only had a few days before Halloween Weekend so of course every Make Up Artist worth hiring was already slammed in the LA are. On a suggestion from Namies (professional make-up store) we were referred to Michelle at Make Up Designory and she put out the word to some of her recent Alum. We were called back within the hour by a lovely young woman named Kat Arundel, who has already been getting her Union hours on Lifetime movies. Kat graciously showed up with all her professional gear, set up quickly, and got both folk done in 3 hours - the final results were top-notch. I cannot say enough good things about this School and their Alum - clearly they are prepared for what Hollywood has to offer... and we will be using them again in the future. If you need a referral for a professional make up job - ask for MICHELLE in Career Opportunities (who knows all the top alum) - she's wonderful. read more

I attended back in 2009. My experience here was always professional and I enjoyed all the tips. They give you homework every night and your assignments are graded accordingly. From what I recall, they have lecture and then they have application time. You're required to do a portfolio, which I still have and love. They also have tests on different type of makeup styles. Their workshops were always very helpful and I would recommend going to as many as you can. With that said, I think this school is only worth it if this is what you want to do for a full time career. I personally did this because I needed this both mentally and emotionally. I was a homemaker with four kids and just sort of lost my vibe. I was fortunate enough to come across a little bit of extra money and so I went to Mud. I was able to learn so much make-up pro tips that I applied not only to myself, but to others including my daughters. After attending, my relationship with make up skyrocketed. I no longer felt daunted by bright eye shadows. Looking back, I probably could of learned a lot of these same tips from youtube but there's nothing like doing something in "the real." This is just my opinion, but I believe that some artist's "just have it." I am not one of those people. I had to work and practice for hours and I still probably didn't have the skill that others just had naturally. Some of my fellow classmates were just fantastic right from the get-go. As a former student, I recommend Mud but I also believe that if you "have it" or practice tons, then most other schools would be just as fine. Obviously, do your research and take it from there. I have no regrets plus I have their 40% discount on Mud Makeup (which I love) for life that is offered to their alumni. As for anyone just wanting to learn to apply makeup to yourself, I recommend going to their free workshops. If your dream is to become a Makeup Artist, then yes, I highly recommend them. read more

I went to this school in 2019. It's been over a year since I attended, and honestly it was a very bad experience. I was bullied at this school and blackmailed by other students. The teachers do not respect you as an individual; I was yelled at on my first day for a question. If you're serious about makeup artistry, the actual schooling taught me a lot. MUD is a very mediocre program in comparison to what they're advertising to incoming students. Practicing artists come here to learn from the best and pay THOUSANDS in tuition just for the staff to give them literal crap. They're literally just there to empty out these students' pockets with the copious amount of debt attending this school will get them into, and on top of that, they expect you to pay for their overpriced, yet cheaply made products. It's a MAKE-UP school so shouldn't the makeup provided there be some top tier product? And not rub right off when a client touches their face. Lol. They literally refuse the use of any other (and GOOD) products but their own, which leads me to believe even further that all they care about is making money. What kinda capitalist scheme is this? On top of that, they're pretty hard headed. They take no consideration into the products that people in the REAL WORLD are gonna wanna use and for a makeup school, they're pretty against personal creativity and individuality. They told my friend that she did her eyebrows "wrong" and "outdated". There is no WRONG way to do makeup! It's almost 2020 for godsake! No need to be so anal. Or rude about the way students choose to wear their own face! They are there to learn the technicalities about makeup and how to apply it on their clients, not to be shamed for how they desire to express themselves. Everything beauty and makeup is objective so for the staff to tell someone how they're doing something "wrong" is just dumb to me. I think overall the school could be a little more encouraging to their students. And open-minded and try and stay with the times? Beauty is constantly evolving, you can't just stick to one standard and roll with it. I chose MUD after doing extensive research and seeing their name pop up multiple times. I attended in 2019 and extended my time there as it was honestly the best experience of my life. While the teachers can be tough, it was a realistic insight into the world of film. After graduating I felt extremely prepared to work on set and was always able to return to the school and ask the teachers for advice on things. I must say this was one of the best experiences in my life attending MUD in Burbank. I learned so much from all my instructors and still love each and every one of them. They literally make you feel so at home and it's never a dull moment. This school is so worth it!!!! They are even so supportive after you graduate. I had the wonderful Mariam as my career advisor and she is so amazing at what she does, she never forgets about you and is always looking for something I can book. I can always count on her and that's one thing I love because most schools say they will look for jobs once you graduate and seriously don't! But that's not the case here. --UPDATE at bottom-- I couldn't tell you how MUD is as a school, because they apparently do not want, nor need students. My daughter has been struggling to accumulate funding, loans, grants, etc. to attend this school. She has done everything in her power to make this happen...her dream. Desiree, the financial aid director is TERRIBLE at her job. She never returns phone calls, she shows no interest in helping a kid with limited funds, find funding (isn't that what financial aid directors do?), and she made my daughter feel like the school wasn't interested in her attendance. Message after message, my daughter would call her and submit loan applications or required paperwork, then try to follow up...and this woman, Desiree, can't be bothered to answer, nor return the call. Nice, right? That sort of behavior reeks of scam to me. This facility strikes me more as the kind of school where you pay upwards of 20k, but have useless certification after graduation. It's hard for me to believe this is a respected, professional institution when they conduct themselves in this manner. If my kid went in there with cash or a few credit cards, I'm sure they would put on a much more enthusiastic show. Now, when we have the money to pay cash in the fall, I'll be writing that check to another school. --UPDATE-- My daughter contacted EI (Elegance International) in Hollywood. Not only were they eager to have her attend and worked out her financial aid needs immediately, but she starts class Monday (only three days after her first contact with them). The staff was fantastic. Clearly the financial aid office at MUD does not know how to do their job. E.I. had my daughter covered financially in a matter of hours and enrolled in a 1 year program. read more

Make-up Designory had one of the most dedicated professionals Sean Conklin came through and guest speak at my cosmetology school back in 2014. Inspired, I was, I decided to attend MUD. I worked with one particular Admission personnel (I won't name him) on attending the school. I attended one day of school, kit opened and used. Through it all, I couldn't secure a place to live. Staying in a hotel they've recommended was not only costly but was not discounted as the school had informed plus the kit I had opened on the first day of school. Unhappy with how the school handled my well-being from day one. It was in my best interest to cancel it and call it "Not for me". Not very positive outcome from the result of it. Hence, making this review a year later. Didn't want to make this review nor give it a star but now I do. I'm sure this school is a great school but sadly not for me. read more

I'm a graduate of MUD, before enrolling, I interviewed many schools throughout LA & OC. I found the instructors & administration staff to be friendly and helpful. Unless the quality of people have changed that drastically, I have no qualms in recommending MUD. I highly recommend making appointments with different schools to find the right fit. Also doesn't hurt to tell them you're interviewing other schools, competition is a motivator. read more

I just return from L.A. MUD... The experience was amazing, I was used to taking classes of proffesors that only were make up artists as a hobby. In L.A. the professors were real make up artists working in the industry, very actualized. They gave me a sense of security because of the information they were sharing with me. Opportunities of work keep showing up. The teaching of the MUD of social media kept trascending, but what it was obvious was that the producers kept calling me because of my technique... If you want an honest review of make up designory instead of a perfect one because they told us to please read. I graduated last year. And honestly they over sell how well structured their school is. Last year, I was freaking out because my bills were piling up, The jobs I was landing took care of my kit fee and sometimes parking. Which are fashion shows, student films, short films Etc. The other jobs available are likely with ULTA, SEPHORA, or a WALGREENS beauty consultant. But i didn't work my ass off in school and in money to be average at a beauty counter. Everybody told me not to worry and that there would be jobs that would lead us into our career. You know what?? That was a lie. With the exception of one person who went off to become an esthetician, every single person that was in my class is not doing make up anymore. Granted. I'll tell u everyone was mostly fresh out of high school some live with family. But with make up designory you either graduate and get low paying jobs or you graduate and get a minimum wage make up job at the mall. I got all A's on my test and never talked outta turn. But that doesn't matter. Everything that was taught pretty sure can be found online with videos, or read with books. I had a great career advisor that regularly texted me and checked up on me, she knew I fell into a deep depression and I couldn't find work, she knew about my anxiety and that I couldn't rely on any family after investing in the school, business cards, make up, all that junk. Out of no where she left mud. She left her job as a career advisor, I guess her corresponding assigned students got the email. But I just felt lost, like what happens now??? I literally had someone walking me through everything emailing me the student event calendar, texting me job references and then that immediately stopped last spring. I was forced to speak with The other advisor Michelle, It was like she looker at me as a joke or as a dummy because I couldn't find a job and it had been so long since I graduated. She told me about on set Facebook groups, that was a joke. By the time I respond to a job post on Facebook I'm in a sea of 500,000 other comments. She told me about goin into other areas, I was open to it but all I ever wanted was to work on tv and film. When I was in school I asked her about getting a representative from the 706 make up hairstylists union. Never heard anything back from her. Make up designory is just a school. And they people that work there are just employees with a job. Not just the instructors. The receptionist called me to get an update for their statistics, (I'm sure they'll win u over with those)she asks me if I'm full time freelance or part time free lance. I tell her "I'm not working at all, I'm not getting much work" she tells me she will just put me down for part time freelance. And there u have it a contribution to the statistics that I'm a working make up freelance artist. I really wanted shanna to pick me as her assistant. I worked hard so she'd notice me, But she ended up picking two other girls, one of which always talked about her behind her back to the rest of the class. I always felt bad about that. Want make up designory to follow u on Instagram, good luck. It was like I begged them support me. Mention the Fxck out of them in posts. I wanted the support from them, wanted them to follow me so bad when my social media followers is constantly growing but they never do. They get hundreds of students all the time. They will never care about every single one. All in all. my experience was different from everyone else's. Please don't attend this school. For obvious reasons I have hidden my identity. read more

In the beginning of the year I wanted to attend this school because of the distance to my home it was so convenient and also because they are a accredited school as well. I called in for some information and at first glance I could feel they wanted to sell me the classes and not helping me to get a better program or help me to the best financial option as well. So they requested so much information and when I was approved and only needed to sign, I decided not to I just felt something in my gut, I was not 100% sure about the school, due to the fact of my impression that if they were not being helpful now, I was just imagining throughout me being in school as a student. I Never got a called back or email to follow up. Well I am so happy I didn't go through with it! I am so happy to say that I am student at another accredited Make up School in Sunset Blvd. and I love it! I am a graduate at this school and I must say, everything I learned from here you can easily learn anywhere. Definitely interview other schools first before applying. Also their student services are very poor. They say that they will help you find jobs but they do a very poor job at it. From my experience, I don't think it was worth coming here. Great school but DO NOT DO HOUSING I have nothing but good things to say about the school! The teachers are AMAZING and the vibe of the school is great. You'll get to meet so many new and incredible people and learn so many awesome things! I did the master class in 2015-2016 and do not regret a thing. Would do it all again today! However, I would never make the same mistake of signing up for housing through the school. It's very comfortable staying across the street and you'll get to meet so many people thought that but Samantha (the housing director) has to be the most stupid person I've ever met in my life and so terrible at her job tat I have no words for it. We had shitty furniture for 5 out of the 6 months we stayed there (shitty as in a broken couch, pee stains on the mattresses and dirty walls) we complained constantly since paying 1200$ a month per person is out of order, they "replaced" the furniture but as that went on we ended up having no furniture for a week. We all payed various of deposits from 200-700$ witch is weird to me and even the rent was different between the 4 of us living in the apartment at the time, some were paying 1100$ and some 1200$ although we had the same move in and out day. You pay a 200$ cleaning fee witch is the most outrageous thing I know since the lady's only come in to do the dishes and lightly dust as you leave the apartment. The rule about no drinking and smoking is in full effect and if you are cought you might end up being expelled from the school. Even if you're of age! The do random checks and go through your stuff when you're at school and even show random people the apartment with out your knowledge. I know it's a rant but I moved from Iceland and was promised this great apartment and was totally disappointed. There were 5 girls only in my class that didn't finish the program because of their horrible experience with housing. I just wanted to put my experience here in hope that it will make some of you think before you give the school administrators your money for something that is not worth it! But the school is GREAT!! I've researched, called, checked out many many many makeup schools on the east and west coast and even in Europe.. I don't regret picking makeup Designory. The LA campus and NYC campus are both amazing. Everyone at both locations are so helpful, fun, cheerful, and AMAZING! They're always willing to help you. Teachers go above and beyond. Career services? As long as you let them know what you need help with, what you're looking for, and a game plan..they will help you. You can't expect them to do everything for you, but they will review your resume, website, etc. and help you fix things up and help find you jobs, but getting the job is up to you. As long as you're trying your hardest you will get the help you need in class to career services. I moved cross country and housing and administration made sure I didn't need a place to stay on multiple occasions. Everyone at MUD LA/NYC are super helpful and absolutely amazing at all of their jobs you can tell they all want to help and see you be successful. Taking the Master Makeup artistry program was the best decision I ever made. Did I mention you can retake any class forever? If I haven't convinced you to come here and you're still looking for a school remember this school is the most extensive makeup school I have found.
