Blackbird - Fly Gym (aerial yoga) class

This is a badass place in the very best way possible! Located off warrigal road, Blackbird studio…read moreoffers aerial hoop, yoga, hammock and pole classes. There is street parking or parking out the front of the studio and you need to walk through the carpeted hallway to get to the main area as there is no official reception. Once inside you'll see the warehouse has been converted into a studio split into 3 sections. The largest area in the back is for pole dancing with wooden floors then the front area is divided into a social area with carpet and round pillows to sit on and the last part is the aerial hoop and hammock corner. Amenities: bottled drinks, cubby holes, toilets and i think there is a change room though I did not use it. Bring: water, small towel, pair of socks or stripper heels, chalk for hands if you have it and your awesome moves. I tried 2 classes: Pole 1 trickster is a beginner class where you warm you learn a few twirls, twists and floor work and combine it at the end for a mini routine. It was quite challenging as it tested my core and upper body strength and my muscles were sore afterwards. Wear booty shorts and a tank to this class and you may wish to bring a pair of socks or heels to do turns more easily. Aerial yoga was right after Pole 1 and it was more of a stretch class which was great cause my whole body was wobbley after not doing pole for so long! You start off on the mat after hooking in your hammock and then slowly learn to do a few poses and stretches using the hammock. My favourite part of this class was at the end we did bat pose hanging upside down in the hammock and of course the relaxation... yoi basically are in your own private cocoon. Cool studio was strong dancers and instructors who make it look way easy and there is a resident mascot named Murphy the dog who likes to put her nose in your crotch. Try it out, I used bodypass for this and will try aerial hoop next.

I have been coming here casually the last couple of months after being introduced to the studio…read morewith a free class pass from Lululemon in Brighton. I have since ditched my gym in favour of coming here, even though I am a bit of a newbie yogi and I'm not exactly skinny so I find it difficult to hold poses for too long, or get quite deep enough into some poses. The teachers here are lovely - they are friendly, not afraid to adjust you, and give ample modifications for difficult poses. The studio is really nice with lovely floorboards and big windows which overlook the bay - from a second floor perspective this is a great sight. Parking is free in a small lot about 100 metres down the street (street parking is only 1 hour and a little difficult to come by). Mat 'hire' is free if you don't have your own. Booking online is a breeze. Some enjoyable extras include the green tea on offer to relax with or chat to other clients after class, but most of all I can't wait for my amazing smelling little lavender eye pillow to be paced over my eyes during savasana - sometimes when there are some tricky poses during class I set my mind on the lavender eye pillow I'll soon get to enjoy during savasana and it helps pull me through! Classes are a bit on the expensive side but it is such a pleasant space to practise with helpful and friendly teachers (and those lavender eye pillows) so it makes it all worth it.

I didn't know what to expect from a Float, as I had never had one before…read more The first one I had was in a double room with my husband. From the minute we were shown the actual float pool I was absolutely delighted. The door opened onto the pool and there were lights like stars in the ceiling. The water was warm and we were able to have the lights on or be in complete darkness. You are given ear plugs, to keep water out of your ears, they also make the experience great as you won't hear many sounds, just your own breathing. As I relaxed and floated in the warm water I felt I was able to take a deeper breath than I had taken for quite a while. I wasn't aware of moving, but found I ended up in a different position to when I started. Although random thoughts came into my mind I was able to push them away and just be in the moment. I have now had five Floats and have three more to go. The last four were in a single room. I can't recommend it enough. I was nervous and sceptical before the experience but will now have it as often as I can afford. It is cheaper than a visit to the Doctor and to me more beneficial. The premises are pristine and you will enjoy a soothing cup of herbal tea afterwards which has been selected to your own needs as you rest for about fifteen minutes. I do not sleep well. After a float I was able to sleep that night for five hours (a miracle for me) before waking. A friend recommended it to me, otherwise I would never have tried it. I just love it!

I have been training at the Los Angeles location for well over a year so it was especially convenient to be able to train here while visiting my family in Melbourne. This studio is one of only two in the city that have Gratz equipment, arguably the best kind of equipment. Gratz machines enable the body to work harder than it would on other kinds of Pilates equipment, making for a superior workout. It is also much simpler to use, which is great for beginners.
