While my experience in a class may be different from the average visit to the Shambhala Center, I did get to interact with the established members and followed the center's philosophy throughout the entire week (some of the practices that took place I won't describe because they are meant to be sacred). However, I can say that everyone that participated created a comfortable and intimate atmosphere that moved us all. Overall, the exercises focused on Dharma art, a Buddhist practice of creating and existing through your own nature--included a lot of meditation to free the mind. While the practices were derived from Buddhist teachings, I wouldn't say this was a religious retreat. Basically, the week was about being vulnerable and opening up to others in order to empower yourself. Something we all need once in a while.

Members have a good sense of humor and it's a fun place to be. I moved to Santa Fe a few months ago and love going here. I went to the DW center in Chicago and to many around the world, the curriculum is always the same. It's laid-back, you learn everything at your own pace. Meditation cushions are there already. You don't need to bring anything. There are no monks/nuns, the main teacher is from Copenhagen and everyone dresses casually /contemporary. Public meditation nights are Thurs 7:30 and Sun 11am. The meditation is guided and usually there is a 10min talk on a Buddhist topic right before by one of the members. The Way Things Are or Entering The Diamond Way are books by Lama Ole Nydahl that give a taste of what it's all about. It's very interesting how Buddhism has moved from the east to the west! Ole Nydahl is the main teacher and there are over 600 DW centers worldwide. He is 78 yrs old and travels to the different centers giving lectures. He asked some who have been practicing for awhile to also give basic teachings, so when you visit the center you can ask questions to them. Hope this helps!
