They have spared no expense in joining modern comforts wth historic charm. Love the several hidden stairways the hosts will show you. They start the fireplace every evening. Wonderful atmosphere to sip in a whisky and relax. The city of Oban just 15 minutes away is the most charming and all around best village I visited while in Scotland. Add Oban and the Barcaldine Castle to your. "Must do" list for Scotland.

Abide and Daniel picked us up and dropped us off from the bus stop that's just a bit too far to walk from in a reasonable amount of time. They were so warm and welcoming, they are really great people. They accommodated us so nicely on their last night of being open for the year before the castle's yearly break in service. We felt like we had the whole castle to ourselves - we practically did! Just sitting by the fire in the main dining hall and sipping a dram was dreamy. Great selection of beers, ciders, and whiskeys at the bar, and wonderful music. The dance instruction was great. Scottish pride is a huge thing, and these folks showed it.

Mull Theatre has a lovely new building in Druimfin, about a mile south of Tobermory. The new…read morebuilding is a lovely space, but is curiously badly designed for its intended purpose, with little front of house area for audience members to gather in, a performance space with no permanent technical installation and no facility to hang anything overhead - something that is fairly essential in any theatre. It's basically a big box with a seating bank at one end and I've been in better-equipped rehearsal studios to be honest. However the staff are all lovely and do a great job in keeping the place running and making every visitor feel welcome, and the resident company have a great reputation on the touring circuit. Despite a previous reviewer's comments, it's not the smallest theatre in the world, and never was. For instance, Malvern has a 'Theatre of Convenience' housed in an old public toilet that is smaller, and each year the Edinburgh Fringe manages to field ever-smaller theatre spaces, including the back seat of a taxi, and I think a bicycle one year? With its new location closer to Tobermory, the theatre is a great asset to the local entertainment scene, but they have to work hard to keep their audience and the building could desperately do with some major funding so that they could properly equip the place.

It's well worth taking the time to view the gardens - not forgetting the many sculptures. But the best part of the Torosay experience for me was getting there - as Mull Little Railway goes from Craignure Pier direct to Torosay. So that makes it easy to visit Torosay Castle on a day trip from Oban. I would say it's worth visiting Torosay but it's not one of these historic buildings that you can visit over and over again - once you've seen it, you've seen it.

This is on the list as one of the must things to do when you visit the isle of mull. The ferry from…read moreoban will dock at craignure it is a bit of a wee walk for those with walking difficulties but you walk along the path in line with the water. There is a car park close to the railway but if your over for the day as a foot passenger it is still accessable. The wee train is a model railway it varies between a steam engine or diesel engine. It operates from May to September but check exact dates. They operate a buy on the day ticket system children under 3 travel on an adults lap for free, they also sell family tickets as well as adult and children's tickets soly. The price for an adult is around £4.50 return and children are classed as being aged 3 to 16 if i remember rightly it was about £1-£1.50 cheaper for a child return. The train is novel and the thousands of visitors each year will confirm it is a fantastic journey through woodland but you still see some fantastic view of the mountains and what is known as the sound of mull. The track runs approximately 2km. It takes you to Torosay Castle which has some lovely views, woodland walks, history of the castle and area, a cafe and a shop. Many a day have we visited just to walk round the gardens and admire the view. I was introduced to this railway through my girlfriend at that time as we visited her family and it is certainly one of my favourite things to do on the island, even if your not into trains you must enjoy this train ride!

Fantastic, ancient castle ruins that are a short, lovely walk from the seaside village of Oban…read more Well worth a visit when you're in the area! So much history here in these castle ruins and all around the grounds - they really work hard to make your visit a very magical experience! These lands are shown to have been inhabited for at least the past 8000 years - but the chiefs of Clan MacDougall have lived here consistently for the past 900 years! They offer free guided tours twice a day Monday through Friday and it's well worth it! Our guide was Jaime and he was so wonderful!! Energetic and so passionate about the history and stories of the castle and grounds!! Really brought it to life. When you enter the grounds, first you pass by a lovely little sheep farm and then up the hill to the castle ruins. The ruins are small but absolutely whimsical and beautiful- with sweeping views of Oban Bay, the Isle of Kerrera, and even Isle of Mull off in the distance! There are QR codes scattered about that take you to webpages describing mythical Scottish creatures thought to inhabit the lands! The ruins are even supposedly haunted by a mischievous brownie sprite and a ghostly Highland piper! After visiting the ruins I highly recommend exploring their museum onsite as well - there are so many fascinating artifacts and information signs - they even had a lovely exhibit about a local photographer from the Clan MacDougall - her work was awesome and very underrated for the time. I spent much longer here than I expected- there's so much to see! The castle ruins require climbing a pretty steep hill and there are some optional stairs once inside the castle ruins so that part I wouldn't consider handicap accessible - but I think the cafe and lower parts of the museum would be. There's also a house on the grounds that was added in the mid 1700s that the current clan chief still lives in today! It's not open to visitors but they're working on changing that to include part of it as a museum in the future. There's a small cafe on site - I grabbed soup, sandwich, and a homemade piece of ginger cake - all was surprisingly delicious!! All in all I had a fantastic visit and could've even spent more time there! And would happily visit again next time I'm in the area!
