Brasserie La Gare, just like the name implies, is just steps away from the Namesti Republiky metro…read morestation and is also close to many tourist attractions. It is indeed in a touristy area, but after having walked a few dozen miles in Prague already, on the last night, close proximity and convenience trumps everything else. We made a reservation online and when we arrived we were promptly led to a table in white tablecloth right next to the window in the dining room. For appetizer, we shared a dozen SNAILS - yes, in Prague, even in a French restaurant, they call them snails, not escargots. In fact, Central Europeans had a long tradition of eating snails even before the French made this delicacy famous. The escargots, ok..., snails, were cooked in rich garlic butter mixed with parsley (that's what the green stuff is just in case you are wondering.) They were delicious, and almost as good as those from the streets of Paris. The CHATEAUBRIAND was brought to us on a carving board together with bone marrow, side dishes of vegetables and mashed potatoes, and a sauce boat full of yummy peppery gravy. Our server carved the beef nicely and plated the dishes meticulously at our table side. The beef was melt-in-your-mouth tender and very flavorful. We could easily tell this was top quality filet mignon and nothing less than the best cut. For the side dishes, I particularly liked the mashed potatoes which tasted like they were made with fresh and naturally creamy potatoes. The peppercorn sauce was rich but not overwhelming, subtly complementing the natural flavor of the steak. Service was 5-star throughout our meal. It began with a complimentary "water melon with bacon" palate cleanser, and ended with complimentary house-made chocolate at the conclusion of our meal. Service was attentive, friendly, prompt but not rushed, and literally white-glove throughout the night. You want me to give you a reason for visiting Brasserie La Gare, or Prague in general? This meal, including two large beers and two glasses of reasonably good wine, cost less than CZK 2,000 which is about US$90. Wanna go?

We were so looking forward to dinner at your beautiful restaurant, which I booked many months in…read moreadvance on my daughter's recommendation. At first we were thrilled with our server's recommendations and excellent attention, as well as with the cocktails, food, and gorgeous ambiance. The problem occurred toward the end of the evening. Our server cleared our dishes and asked if we were interested in dessert. We said we would be happy to consider the choices. He left us and got busy with another party, which we understood, so waited for about 20 minutes. One of his colleagues passed by and we mentioned that we were waiting. We saw her tell our server, who still did not make time to check in with us. After waiting even longer, one member of our party--originally from England, which becomes important later--got up, found the server, and asked if we could get the dessert menu. Finally he came to our table. He did not apologize for the wait (all he needed to say was that he had gotten swamped, and we would have been fine with that small explanation). Instead, he said, "The hardest part is waiting," mentioned there is no actual dessert menu, then left and came back with a board showing us some of the desserts, explaining what they were. He was obviously irritated with us and so we opted to end the evening and asked for the check. He brought it quickly and pointedly explained that we could tip him. We were uninterested in rewarding his rudeness and did not tip him. Then he insultingly said to our English friend, who was paying: "I didn't think you had an American accent." This was so unprofessional. We go out of our way to be gracious when we travel, not wanting to be seen as "ugly Americans." We tip almost everyone and generously. Your server's increasing rudeness and growing irritation with us was completely uncalled for, and we are so disappointed to have this memory of an otherwise wonderful few days in your beautiful city.

Amuse bouche Duck with mayo sandwich. Duck was delicious…read more Not sure how it was cooked. But I could eat a full size one.  1st course Marinated beef with chorizo. The little bits of greens gave it an intense grassy taste. Meat was tasty. The marinade is made of olive oil sugar and salt. The 3 main seasonings for cooking.  2nd course Sole tournado. Saved by the tasty risotto, well cooked, with white asparagus. Who doesn't like cheese and rice? The sole was tender, but lack much seasoning. If eaten together, a but of fish and rice, then it was delicious.  3rd course Foi gras. Preferred when it's just simplybsearwd. But like waiting it in any manner. The buttery toast was a good vessel for the foie, the jam was not my favorite.  4th course Rabbit ballotine. When a dish reminds you of your mom's cooking you know they've touched a special place. Tender meat, not gamy, stuffed with vegetables and in a delicious broth.  Accompanied by asparagus, same as sole, and some gnnoci like sides  5th course Creme brulee and mango sorbet. The creamiest brulee I've had, the mango tartness added a nice contrast. There was a tart fresh fruit and some mint leaves both made it even better. Delicious

We found this restaurant on the Bib Gourmand list…read more The location is indeed "on a hill," kind of in the middle of nowhere (a residential area). Even our Uber driver was confused when he dropped us off. It's a nice quiet setting, and they have lots of old photos on the wall, giving it a homey feel. Service is friendly, and they speak English. Wines: they have a good number by the glass. We tried a Czech Pinot, which I didn't love - it was on the lighter side (almost like grape juice). The 2nd wine I got was a cabernet - syrah blend, which I liked more, and the pour was pretty generous. They have a 4 or 5 course tasting, which is a good value, but we ended up ordering separately from the menu so that we had more choices. Amuse: Slowly baked pork with red onion, hoisin, cucumber - like Peking duck (but pork) served on a spoon Sampler of 6 starters (370 CZK for 2 people): 1. Slow roasted veal saddle with tomato jam, garlic confit and pecorino. The veal was tender and tomato jam was intense (in a good way) 2. Grilled calamari: tender 3. Terrine of foie with brioche and a wine gelee 4. Red lentil and tofu croquette with a mint pesto 5. Smoked salmon with cucumber + dill tartare and tomato gazpacho 6. Langoustine bisque - this was supposed to be an oxtail ravioli, but it was substituted with the bisque, which I had already ordered as a soup Soups: - Veal consommé and bone marrow dumplings: the consommé had intense flavor, and the dumplings were super tender. I thought this was great for only 90 CZK. - Langoustine bisque with coconut milk red curry: there was a hint of lemongrass, and it came with prawn egg rolls Mains: - Garlic and Pernod prawns with shaved fennel and a leek risotto: this came with 6 prawns, perfectly cooked / tender. The risotto had good flavor, too, but I was too full by the end to finish it - Pork osso bucco: over a smoked potato puree with a beer sauce that reminded me a little of BBQ; it also came with brussels sprouts Portions were pretty large, and we both left quite full. We made a reservation online, but it was only about half full on a Wednesday night. We reserved for 9:30pm, and we ended up being the last customers as they were closing up, so we felt bad towards the end of the meal as only the chef/owner seemed to be left. It's a bit out of the way, but the food was very solid, and prices were very reasonable by California standards.

Our appetizer was terrific--a sweet, crispy fried roll of some sort with a shrimp inside (order of four), which neither of us had ever heard of but we are super happy we gave it a go! Yum!
