The tragic story written on this plaque talked about a lynching of a black Union Army veteran who ran away with a white girl only to be found by 25 masked horseman who promptly lynched him. I find myself stopping when I see a historic plaque. I learned a bit of local history and walk away a more wiser person.

There are around 8,866 graves of Civil War unknowns, the 2nd largest number of unknowns in any of the national cemeteries under the jurisdiction of the Department of Veterans Affaires. This is attributed to the Memphis National Cemetery not being established until 1867, two years after the close of the Civil War. During the initial burial, wooden burial markers placed at the graves had been removed, or exposed to the elements. There was no mandatory use during the Civil War of any form of personal ID. In 1867, about 250 bodies of Union soldiers, from the Battle of Fort Pillow, were moved from a battlefield cemetery south of Fort Pillow to Memphis National Cemetery to be re-interred in a designated field. Many of the dead from the Sultana maritime disaster are also buried here.

It is relatively easy to find, as it is located just across from the Crystal Shrine Grotto. This is one of the more extravagant graves that you will find in the cemetery. The grave is marked by a huge bronze foot stone that has photos of Hayes in different stages of his life and his movies engraved in it. It also has the God's Garden poem inscribed and reads: God looked around his garden And he found an empty place He then looked down upon this earth And found your star He put his arms around you And lifted you to rest God's garden is beautiful now He always takes the best. Parking here is very easy. There is parking available right in front of where the plot is located. I know what I want my grave to look like now, when it is my time. Anyway, this is not a long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. So, you may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other attractions in the area, or making this stop part of a larger itinerary to maximize your time and trip. The interior is furnished with some original and some replica, but all very interesting. They give a quick talk, then you tour on your own. Definitely worth a stop.

The Crystal Shrine Grotto is a large man-made crystal cave hidden in the middle of Memorial Park…read moreCemetery in East Memphis. It was started in the 1930s by Mexican sculptor Dionicio Rodríguez and is covered with tons of quartz crystals, religious sculptures and biblical scenes depicting the life of Jesus as well as grottos, bridges, and concrete landscapes. After crossing into the cave you'll find scenes depicting: - The Nativity - The Last Supper - The Resurrection - Various Old and New Testament stories And it's all illuminated by colored lights reflecting off the crystal-covered walls. It's one of those things you have to see to fully appreciate and it's absolutely worth a visit. Admission is free and it's easy to find once in the cemetery (there's plenty of signs pointing the way) and parking is easy. Definitely don't miss this if you're in Memphis. Pro Tip: it's located near the grave of soul music legend Isaac Hayes so if you're into music history you may want to package the two stops together.

Got an email from the museum stating they offer free general admission on every third Thursday of…read moreeach month. Took advantage of that and visited with my mom, son and niece. I hadn't been since I was a kid, so I was excited to visit again. For the most part, a lot was the same as I remember and I was excited to show the kids. There were a few new things too, which was cool. We didn't get a chance to do the planetarium ($5 on the free third Thursdays) nor the giant screen theater (also $5). Next time, I for sure want to take my son inside the planetarium because it was my most favorite thing as a kid. Hopefully, he'll love it too. As an adult, the museum definitely seems a bit random and there's not a whole lot that's interesting (unless you're a huge science/history fan). Overall, the kids enjoyed themselves and that's all that matters.
