What a great experience we had at Munjoy Hill! We came to watch our cousin's band performance as well as other local bands and they were incredible. There's not a lot of on-site parking, but plenty of options on the street. The tavern was clean, and there a good outdoor area were the bands performed. There was an outdoor bar, which was pretty convenient service. We had a blast with the all the bands and definitely recommend Munjoy Hill tavern. Go Tiger Bomb! read more

Fun little tavern off the beaten path! A nice break from other crowded and at times overpriced bars in Portland. This place attracts more of a local clientele and I love its vibe. No frills, great music, and even better pours. They are quite affordable and even have happy hour deals. I can't comment much on food, since I haven't eaten here yet, but the drinks are great. Love a good dive bar and had never stopped by this one until I was walking to Eastern Prom for the 4th of July celebration. Atmosphere is the perfect dive feel. Drinks are cheap, beer is cold and food is just what you want when the hunger pangs hit you and you've had a few beverages. For sure my new favorite spot to go after a long day. Great selection of beer on tap and great bar snacks. They also sell mixed drinks if that's your thing. This is my second time here (this week, but who's keeping tabs). The first time was a week day, quieter, but not dead. Bartender (Vanessa) was great and very friendly! I started my night out alone and she made me feel less awkward about drinking alone. Today is Friday, so it is slightly busier, but she got my beer right to me and now I'm sitting on a bar on the inside, writing this review, at a corner table, watching for a seat at the bar to open up. I have walked by Munjoy Hill Tavern numerous times and each time I thought about how sketchy it looked from the outside. However don't let looks deceive you, because inside is not what you would think. The minute you walk into Munjoy Hill Tavern, you are relaxed by the smells of pub food and warmed by the fire place against the wall. The place has a rustic pub charm with brick walls and dim lighting. They also provide three TVs to watch some games that might be playing. Surprisingly, the noise level (even with playoff games airing on the TVs) was generally calm. This made it even more enjoyable after a long day and just wanting to spend some time talking with friends while getting a drink. As far as the drink menu, Munjoy Hill Tavern does a nice job of providing some local craft beers on draft, as well as some domestic options. They also provide some wine choices and have a fully stocked bar to make mixed drinks. They also provide some food options. Think pub food, like burgers, sandwiches, pizza, wings, etc. These food options are very reasonably priced! Although I didn't order food, I was definitely eyeing some of the options that other people were getting. Overall, Munjoy Hill Tavern does a great job of providing a low-key pub/tavern experience. Finally gave this place a try and I'm still not entirely sure how I feel about it. It has a lot less character than the previous bar that occupied the space, but I guess there's something to be said for having a place on the Hill to watch a game other than the Front Room. They did make the outside patio area much nicer, though the owner being brothers with the building owner, they might have had a few more liberties in what they were allowed to do than the previous tenant. I guess it's just a slightly divey, townie bar. I noticed a few of the more loud, obnoxious drunks I see around Portland frequenting this place, which seems about right. Everything is ordered at the bar and service slowed to a 5+ minute wait for a beer occasionally, sometimes just because of chatting with one customer, which again, probably feels homey and like you're at Cheers if you're that person. I have a few friends that can still afford to live on the hill and if they wanted to meet here for a beer, I would, but I don't think I would go out of my way to go here either. It's still very much a neighborhood vibe, just a little more sterile and Good Ol Boys than the last bar. Really nice neighborhood bar. Opens early, as any good dive bar should, and the barstools were mostly occupied when I arrived before noon. Very comfortable inside, not fancy, not grubby, just right, nice cozy string light-lit ambiance, and reasonable selection of beer at reasonable prices. I went with the good old bottle of Bud for $4 bucks. Didn't try the food, but others were eating and they have a decent menu of bar food. It is definitely a locals bar, and that might be the only thing that would keep me from being a regular. I'm not a snob, I'm a native, but at least the day I was there, there wasn't going to be any stimulating conversation going on. I sat between two old timers at the bar (I'm one myself) and spent a couple of hours talking with a regular, but he was a bullshitter who spent the whole time trying to impress me with embellished and yet still boring tall tales. Nobody else seemed interested in speaking with anyone but their friends. The owner was there (pointed out by the BS-er), but spent the whole time staring at his phone. I know, that's the way it is at bars these days. So, I recommend the place, but bring your own charming company. read more

This place is the epitome of a friendly neighborhood bar. They attract an eclectic crowd of locals from the hill, downtown, and people from "away". It is very cozy inside and can become "standing room only" without notice. A large outdoor area with tables and a smoking area provides a little sanctuary for those who don't like to rub elbows during peak hours. I love to stop in when I'm in the neighborhood. I know it's classified as a dive-bar, but that's only from the outside. Any resemblance to a dive-bar disappears when you walk through the door. Pub/Comfort food menu. Beer and mixed drinks. Wish I could've tried something here! I came in and asked the bartender if I could sit anywhere (it was in between meals and understand that sometimes places don't want people all spread out). She said yes so I took a seat at the small bar section next to the door. And then I sat there. And I kept sitting there. After about 10 mins of sitting and not even getting a glance from the bartender I decided to get up and leave. On my way out, I noticed ANOTHER table had a sign saying "See bartender for service." Great food. Great feel and really a nice place to meet for a drink. Stuffed bread is to die for.

MHT has a great eclectic mix of native Portlanders and newcomers in a friendly atmosphere where all seemed welcome in comparison to the former Crow Bar where it it felt that if you weren't a hipster or hater you weren't really welcome and where misery apparently loved company. Thankfully all that's gone and it doesn't matter how you dress, how many tattoos you have or don't have, if you're old or young, or who you hang out with, you can feel 'at home' here. I've only tried the steak sandwiches and they're really good and full of the main ingredient, no skimping here, and hopefully it stays that way! Add fries for just a buck, or onion rings for two, but frankly they aren't that great and there's room for improvement here. The place is certainly learning as it goes along, but there's a genuine effort that is apparent to keep improving and also to bring locals and non-locals together in a neighborhood that under the pressure of gentrification has grown in its divisiveness. This I would say is the owners' greatest gift to the community and I see this place playing a big part in bringing people together from all backgrounds while respecting rather than denigrating "the locals" as I see (or should I say hear) happen quite often as people have lost sight and a bit of respect for those who made Portland what it is in the first place, and what attracted so many to move here. Change is good, but respecting the heritage of the city you moved to is even greater. MHT is an opportunity to combine the two, and like the locals and new arrivals who love the city, it's here to stay! read more
