The bouncer working on a Friday night on 1/16/2026 at around 10 pm was a prick. I tried to walk into the door and he said where are you going? I asked him why and he didn't answer me. I then told him I am just going to relax and have a drink in the bar. He grabbed my jacket as I attempted to walk through the door and said you never showed me your ID. I told him you never asked before I tried to walk in. I then apologized to him, and I tried to show him my ID. He told me he didn't want to look at it and told me to leave instead. I thought he was just a drunk customer joking around with me before he asked me for my ID, because he didn't identify himself before he grabbed me. I left right away because I didn't want any trouble. I went to Tomaso's Canteen right after and they treated me with dignity and respect. I had a great night at Tomaso's Canteen and the staff was really friendly and welcoming. I highly recommend people avoid Commercial Street Pub, considering there are better bars in the area nearby which will treat you with more respect than Commercial Street Pub. read more

Commercial St. Pub has an interesting vibe, kind of like stepping into someone's living room, complete with comfy couches, end tables, and some real comfy bar stools. The bartenders are awesome, and the drinks are reasonably priced. We didn't grab any food, so I can't speak to that, but if you're cruising down the street and need a quick drink, this place is a solid stop. I was told no dogs allowed. he said I don't care. he called the owner to come down. he told me the same thing no dogs he got sued once because of a Dog. said I had to leave. Limited menu with so-so fare. Very much a local dive bar complete with locals. The bartender made us feel like she was doing us a favor just waiting on us. We were in Portland for a couple of days and we went to this bar on Sunday night and the service was great. However, when we returned on Monday evening there was a different bartender that was so rude to us we had to leave. Jokingly, we made a "man hating" comment and she came and said that she just lost some "paying" customers because of our comment. I mean, weren't we paying customers too?? Our drinks weren't free! I really believe the customers left because she was probably so rude to them also. Anyways, great bar but watch for the bartenders!! read more

Treated Us Well We spend a lot of time in Portland during the summer, and Commerical St. Pub is one of our frequent stops while romping around the Old Port. The location of the bar is great. They have a lot of TV's with sporting events running all the time. I have to say the chairs are probably some of the most comfortable ones I've ever sat in! They also have a great jukebox and a single pool table for patrons. Side remark: The staff was wonderful to us. The owner was so drunk and berated us then he proceeded to humiliated and embarrassed us because we came in to watch the game decked out in our jersey with a terrible towels in tow . We were told that they where not be used in the bar because" that's was taunting and that's what you and Philadelphia do" . We never used them the game wasn't even on but I apologized then a complete stranger came out of rest rooms (located directly behind us) got into a drunk argument with the owner we never said a word the bartender sat our drinks in front of us we never touched them the owner pored them out and said we could get the F*** out of his bar Kicked us and the stranger out put his drink on our tab my husband was trying to explain we did nothing wrong he threaten to call the police I said please do you charged me for something we never got and for a complete strangers tab, Moral of the story him and his wife where completely drunk yelling they been in business 35 years treated us HORRIBLE HORRIBLE mind you we been going here every time we came to Maine we had a great relationship with them until now we where left completely baffled I'm very upset saddened by this so DO better ZERO 0 star DO NOT RECOMMEND read more

You know, I really enjoy The Pub. I just can't really tell you "what" or "why." I think going there feels like a refreshing breath of the Portland that was before we became a top destination for hipsters and Manhattanites. You can expect to find "the regulars" camped out at the bar drinking draft beers out of oversized glasses and feeding dollars into the game machines. It's humble, welcoming and easy to navigate. This might be one of my favorite places to watch sports and get caught up in a conversation with a local about this weeks rivalry. They don't have regular chairs, instead they have office chairs at their tables that are fun to slide around on. The pub doesn't aim to please, the pub is what it is. Take it or leave it, baby! Out of towners beware Skinny blonde Bartender was very rude and refused service to my brother and I because she "didn't believe our IDs were legitimate". We are from Texas and have Texas ID which seemed to be difficult for the bartender. She first claimed that she doubted my height which I thought was surely a joke as I'm clearly taller than average. I'm 26 and my brother is 31, we look don't look like kids, we were completely sober and very polite. Local dive bar right in the heart of two areas -- the touristy Old Port and the working waterfront. You can imagine the cast of characters that find their way into this pub. With that said, everyone we met was nice, interesting, and a bit unique. They are taking COVID seriously, and we felt perfectly safe with the precautions. It was our first day in Maine and we were exploring the historic part of Portland known as Old Portland. We were quite hungry -- having left home at 4AM to get to the airport for our flight to Portland. We sort of stumbled on this place and it had good reviews on Yelp so we decided to have lunch here. This is definitely a local, neighborhood bar that caters to a lot of the locals. When we were there, I think everyone in the bar knew everyone else with the exception of us and one other group of tourists. This pub is definitely casual and is sort of a dive-bar. However, it was very clean and very welcoming. The service was a little on the slow side since there was only one waitress who was not only tending bar but handling service for the dining area. She was hustling. The only other employee I spotted was the cook in the small kitchen. My wife and I both had lobster rolls ($9) which were very good with fries that were excellent. The food arrived hot and was delicious. Summary -- food was good, service was O.K. and the prices were pretty reasonable. read more

A local dive bar with a long history... not sure what to expect from the food we ordered and waited. Bartender was super sweet and very attentive. The lobster panini was the most delicious thing I have ever had. It was on the special menu and she said it changed daily, that was a good thing to hear in my opinion. The side salad was awesome and we were told fresh veggies from the farmers market. Veggie soup looked home cooked, too. Really good. This is not a typical place I would head into when visiting Portland. It doesn't exactly have the most beautiful decor- sort of reminds me of like a VFW lol! Def. a locals spot, but not so much that you don't feel welcomed, which is generally Portland's vibe anyway. Now onto the food. For a little hole in the wall pub, their food is awesome!! I got the crab cakes. They were moist, flavorful, and very little filler which is what you want in a crab cake. I ordered a little side salad with it instead of fries and it was delicious! I love that they had put apples, beets, and radishes in it! I came here with my parents and they both enjoyed their meals. My mom does not have a big stomach, so when she eats almost all of something, you know it's good. I can't remember what she ordered, it was some kind of like a steak and cheese sandwich. My dad ordered a french dip I think and he loved it. The coleslaw that I tried with it was wicked good and I normally don't even like coleslaw. Def. check it out for a lunch spot! read more

You want dive bar you got dive bar. I love dive bars and this place was in seriously bad need of a remodel. But that's part of the charm of real honest to goodness dive bar. They are like time capsules of a simpler time. A time when men were men, boys were boys and there weren't any fears of extremist terrorists. The night we were there was a Saturday in mid October. The place was full of locals watching NHL hockey on the television. I like to get a little local culture when visiting an otherwise touristy town and this place delivered. It's hard to describe Commercial St. Pub. A few reviews say it's divey but it isn't really. It just felt like I time traveled back to a bar or pool hall from the 80's. There are plenty of TV screens, a pool table and some electronic games. The staff was great. Food was just OK. They're so genuinely kind and attentive that they put supposedly high-end barkeeps to shame because they really cater to their customers in a way that makes you feel really welcome and that they're glad you're there.
