I've been coming to this gym for around 6 months now and have to say I like the Pure Gym philosophy…read more- very simplistic, no padding and bringing you the cheapest possible deal they can. For £18.99 a month it's not too bad considering I used to pay £45 at peak time at Bannatyne's in Manchester city centre a few years back. All modern equipment and a massive warehouse type feel to it all, there's plenty of room to move around and feel like everything is quiet and available even when it's busy. With regular classes each day (download their app to book) included in the price, it's a really good deal if you actually go regularly. Yoga is £2 more per class though. Open 24hrs a day too making it a really handy and helpful if you live a busy life.

This Parrs Wood branch woes you away like any other and makes you believe that the membership fees were worth every penny. They're obviously stocked with the latest equipment and there might not be a single machine that you might want and they don't have. It comes well packed with a cafe with internet access and makes your day a well spent one.

I've been a member of David Lloyd gym now for a number of years, and even though it's expensive I…read morewould say it's one of the best gyms in the area for your money. As well as a fully equipped gym and tennis courts it has a 25 metre indoor swimming pool, a slightly smaller outdoor swimming pool (with sun loungers for when it's sunny in the summer months), an array of classes for all members held 7 days a week, a Saks hair dressers, beauty salon, sportswear shop, lovely cafe with delicious food, plenty of comfy seating, an adult only quiet area, a children's soft play area, and a partridge in a pear treeeeee! The staff there are really polite and always greet you with a smile on their face. The personal trainers and really approachable - I know they've helped me out with an occasional fitness question from time to time. And I would highly recommend Suzie's Fitness Pilates class on a Saturday and the Hatha Yoga class with Caroline on a Sunday. The only thing stopping David Lloyd being a 5 star for me, is that recently they had a refit of new equipment and only put in small numbers of certain machines. Which means on a busy evening or weekend there is usually always a wait for the powerplate for example. On a whole, I think this is one of the best gyms in the Cheadle/Gatley area.

Join up, but take on board the one and only thing that lets David Lloyd down as a club.. and sadly its not something that they can do anything about... Kids. I don't like boys watching females change their clothes. Its creepy. I don't like kids rushing around screaming, when adults want to relax by the pool. I could list all the unhygienic and irritating things that kids do, but you get the idea. If you feel like being around other people's noisy bratty kids, is like being in a nightmare, then David Lloyd is not the club for you. If they ever wanted to build an adults-only pool? Or have adults-only changing rooms? Or cater for kids food in an area that is completely away from adults?. Then it would be THE perfect club. But at the moment, it is what it is... child friendly.. and if you're not, find another club.

What on Earth is Crossfit, you might ask. Well I certainly did when my friend, who's an avid fan,…read morefirst mentioned this to me. To quote their website, it's "a strength and conditioning programme built on constantly varied, functional movements executed at high intensity." I still wasn't totally sure what this meant so decided to join them for a free introductory session before Christmas. Based in a former garage building in the grounds of the imposing Pear Mill in Bredbury near Stockport, this has none of the sleekness and modernism of the gyms that are popping up all over the place. The large, single space inside is equipped with rowing machines, a metal frame for manual pull ups and areas for weights and floor exercises. Thankfully this is definitely not a 'muscle head' / Rocky Balboa gym environment and there are no floor-to-ceiling mirrors on the walls. No mirrors at all, in fact. After an hour's induction where the centre manager (who's a lovely chap) provides you with a one-on-one session, introducing you to the various exercises involved, you can choose to stay for a Crossfit class - which I did. Fast forward an hour and the human formerly known as Michael was completely exhausted and just about alive. In that time I'd rowed, done pull ups, sit ups, press ups, box jumps and squats (with barbells), lifted kettle bells and lunged my way across the centre. Every class is different and the exercises for the day are written on the whiteboard before you arrive so you know what you need to do. You're provided with your own record sheet to keep notes on your personal bests so you can see how you're progressing week-to-week. It's certainly different to what I've experienced before in a gym; plus the friendliness of the staff and fellow 'Crossfitters' makes you feel welcome. Though I'll probably stick to BMF (http://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/bmf-prestwich), this is worth a try if you want to concentrate more on strength and conditioning.

The gym facilities are excellent and there is a range of equipment and activities for everyone, including a full timetable of classes. We particularly enjoy the swimming facilities. All safe and supervised with views of the canal. I can highly reccomend a visit to this gym and we have had a family membership for a long while which we have certainly had good value. For me the main attraction is the pool which is free from kids after 630 for either a fitness swim or a relaxing swim. The lighting in the pool area is chilled out and you can swim directly from the inside pool to the outside pool which is great for the summer and the winter! Upstairs there's an extensive spa area with sauna, fire and ice room, steam room and salt steam room, plus the infinity pool! The gym is well equipped and has a movie room where you can watch a film while you workout. As with many gyms these days the free weights area is too small and over crowded with no enforcement of gym etiquette, since most gyms suffer from this I've not marked them down :) The restaurant serves an interesting Asian fusion menu which is reasonably priced, delicious and does a good job of creating an intimate atmosphere.
