Pool or pulpit...that is the question!…read more Here at the Virgin Active in Repton Park, they placed a swimming pool right inside a church...how cool is that? When I first entered the pool I was really taken aback and quite mesmerized - it felt a little sacrilegious, but at the same time I very much enjoyed swimming in this beautiful environment. The gym area itself is also quite neat, as you sweat underneath a prettily-decorated vaulted ceiling. There's plenty of exercise equipment, although the weight-lifting area is a little small. This Virgin Active gym is in Repton Park, which was the site of the fomrer Claybury Hospital - a psychiatric hospital. Apparently there's still the ghosts of the past haunting these premises....

This Virgin club is nestled within…read morethe closed community (Repton Park), the best way to get here would be by car, although there is a bus stop just outside Repton Park it is still quite a walk when you are inside. This gym has a Costa Coffee inside next to the reception that also includes food (this can get slightly irritating when working out and smelling food) o_O The gym has quite a few treadmills, bikes, rowing machines, free weights, TRX etc, each machine has a tv screen with the ability to plug in your IPhone/IPod which allows you to listen to your music but also you can store your workout data to your phone too. The most amazing area in this gym is the swimming pool, it is absolutely stunning, the whole gym used to be a chapel for the mental institution, so the decor inside is beautiful. Within the pool area, you also have the sauna and steam room, along with some sun loungers and some juice to drink. The only gripe I have is that there is no air-conditioning (but I don't think there is anything they can do about that due to the building structure).

Albany Leisure Centre is the smallest centre in Enfield with a gym the size of most people's living…read moreroom which luckily is air conditioned. The weights and toning equipment fight for space among the cardio equipment but there is a nice community atmosphere as you are so close to the people working out with you. The pool is clean and spacious with a mirrored ceiling for less backstroke crashes. There are 2 lanes during public sessions for 'slow' and 'fast' swimmers and also a sauna and a steam room on poolside for a real spa experience. Showers are cubicles in the ladies but there are only 3 so space is limited at busy times. Other showers are on poolside but can be seen by all swimmers so costumes and trunks should stay on for the benefit of the lifeguards and pool users. Changing rooms are spacious, the cubicles are around the edge with 3 large rooms for group changing. There are hairdriers and a large mirror for grooming in the ladies changing. The lobby has a variety of vending machines to choose from but none that cater to the healthy, mainly chocolate crisps and fizzy drinks with some extortionately priced tiny bottles of water. Behind the reception desk staff are friendly and helpful, and easily identifiable from lifeguards. There are also a range os swimming related items sold here suich as floats, goggles and armbands etc.

You also get discounts on local restaurants included in the price and access to personal trainers. Staff are very friendly. Lots of classes included in price. Unfortunately, there is no swimming pool, although they are planning to open a gym with a pool in Enfield shortly, which members will have access to. Main complaints are that the changing area and main gym are a bit smelly and the room in which classes take place can get too hot when full. Bring your own towels as they do charge extra for this service.

Very disappointed,…read more I was new to the gym, and I have been with them for 15 days. I have never been in the gym, and I decided to let it go because it was not what I wanted and I was also feeling very sick. That's one of the reasons I have never been in one. I found out that I need to pay a fee to leave the gym, but I did not expect to be told that I need to pay 59 pounds. What for? In the time when I was checking the app, I found that they wanted to overcharge me (even if I didn't find it correctly to even charge me the actual amount of membership, which is 39 pounds). I have paid it, but they have not told me what they are doing or what my options are in case I leave before six months. After I paid the membership fee to leave, it was straight away removed, not even letting me use the gym until the end of the membership! What a shame, and shame on them, as they want to still, and I am sure I am not the only person out there who has been tricked, so just be aware that they charge anything without even telling you from the beginning what the situation is. very frustrating the way they manipulate the situation in their favour and how I paid for something that I have never used. Theft ! very disappointed! "Poor and miserably ! And the guy that did the membership--shame on you that you haven't told me that I can't cancel it without paying the fee! Shame, shame, shame!

I was welcomed by the team Sylwia, Steve and Suzie who were all so reassuring and if I listened, followed the diet plan and had patience the weight would fall off. Sylwia recommended the Vacunaut. Eight weeks later, I am two stone lighter (10kg) and feel fantastic. The suit now takes two minutes. It definitely works. I'm on my second course and looking forward to wearing a new wardrobe this summer. Words fail how much this has meant to me so I have nothing but praise. Linda Read, April 2012 Vacunaut

I chose this Hypoxi studio in South Woodford as it was closet to where I live. Staff are friendly and helpful and and give you diet advice etc which helps with the hypoxi course. Its a small place with only one upright and one horizontal bike and they also have one treadmill for Vacunault (again see website if you don't know what all this is). You have to book in advance (I think they allow about a week in advance) as the more popular time slots get taken up quickly). Its not for the shy as you exercise in a glass fronted shop but its away from the main shops so you don't get too much of an audience. I got used to it after a week or so and being all in one room you get to chat to the other customers whilst you pedal :-). If this is not your thing note that there is another Hypoxi studio in Loughton that has private rooms if you prefer this. Its mostly ladies but men are welcome too! BTW you have to attend 2-3 times a week so you need to be able to commit to this, each session was around 30 mins but allow 1 hour to get ready before/after. Parking is very limited (2 spaces in front of shop) so don't drive if poss! Well I guess you want to know if it works right? well I can only speak for myself, I did about 10 sessions at a cost of around £350 and I lost ten pounds in weight! I would say that is reasonable (cheaper than lipo anyway). But as each person is different I guess you have to make up your own mind. I think the average weight loss was about 4-6 pounds (but I have to say most of the other people in there were already nice and slim in my opinion so they didn't have much to lose!). They also take you weight and measurements each week and record them on a card which you get to keep at the end, they measure areas like your thighs, stomach etc and at the overall end add it all up - I lost 13.5 inches in total but like I said before I think I was above the average (sheer determination I think!). You can ask in the shop for a taster session for free if you want to give it a quick go and see what you think. Also it was a while ago that I went so prices etc might not be up-to-date so worth asking. In my opinion I would say give it a go, but some of my friends have still resisted due to the cost. What can I say it worked for me, and I will be going back for another course soon :-)
