Wow! This was a big surprise. I had read that it was previously closed for a long duration due to modernization of the building (which used to be a salt warehouse) and restoration of the artifacts. It reopened some time in August 2024. It now has an air conditioning system which it didn't have previously. Imagine what it must have been like to visit in the summer with no way to cool off. Yikes. We were very fortunate.
I love what they've done to the museum. It's so very organized. The statues and artifacts unearthed in Ostia Antica are proudly displayed, and they look fresh & vibrant. The repairs are not noticeable. In other words, nothing was added to make the statues complete. Any missing appendages are still missing (arms, legs, and noses). If that makes any sense. It was also nice to see the restored wall frescoes, as well as the newly added videos, sound system, and interactive displays.
The focal point as you enter the museum is the Winged Victory statue that was found near the gate of Porta Romana. Amazing! There were also many complete statues found in the Necropolis & Temples that give us insight into the people who lived in this ancient city. The inscriptions of the tomb markers were very much intact. There's a name to the face, and many historical references.
The museum on its own is well worth the visit to this archeological site. It deserves its own listing on any review website. Then again, I would have been happy to pay admission to the park without the museum. The entire experience was very memorable. The museum was just the icing on the cake. Don't forget to visit it while you're here. It completes the whole experience. read more
