The museum of José Guadalupe Posada should not be missed if you are visiting Aguascalientes. For those who don't know, José Guadalupe Posada was a Mexican political printmaker who used relief printing to produce popular illustrations. His work has influenced numerous Latin American artists and cartoonists because of its satirical acuteness and social engagement. He used skulls, calaveras, and bones to show political and cultural critiques. There is a lot of history in the museum, with several displays that seem to hold original newspapers from the Mexican Revolution. The museum is small but packed with a lot of prints. A couple of notes. Cash is only accepted to get in, and they do charge an additional 30 pesos if you take pictures. I highly recommend doing a frottage over some replica prints to take home a picture or two. The printing press in the back of the museum is super cool and is from the United States. You can thank Jose Guadalupe Posada for the iconic calaveras that grace all things Day of the Dead. Since Day of the Dead was cancelled in L.A. we flew to Aguascalientes, where my maternal lineage can trace back to the time they arrived from another continent. Jose Guadalupe Posada born in Aguascalientes, created the Calavera Garbancera that would later grace The Alameda Mural by Diego Rivera. Rivera added the body and named her La Catrina. Posada stands alongside her in the mural. Frida and Diego were both fans. The museum has rotating exhibits in one gallery. A sculpture courtyard, gallery of Posada originals and a workshop where you see how Posada created his art. The gift shop stocks hard to find mescal too...at least when my Tío dropped in at the end of our private tour is what he requested. They were out. read more

I love this museum. I can never tire of it. It is free on Wednesdays. The museum is well maintained and the staff is very friendly.

We came back to Aguascalientes from Merida/Cancun to spend a few more days with family. On this leg of our trip, we visited Museo José Guadalupe Posada, located in central Aguascalientes. While the museum bears José Guadalupe Posada's name, some very nice work by contemporary Mexican artists is also on display in one wing of the museum. José Guadalupe Posada (1852-1913) was an influential graphic artist/printmaker/engraver. His work, often satirical, is entertaining and appealing. We got tripped up by the 5:00pm closing time and were somewhat rushed to see everything. Yelp shows the closing time as 6:00pm, but it was five p.m. the day we were there. I'd say that if you leave yourself 1.5 to 2 hours, you'll be able to leisurely check out the entire museum. Photos without flash can be taken. In the interior courtyard, there is a table with a print block, little squares of paper and crayons for you to try your hand at creating a picture. That was fun. Several inexpensive parking garages are located near the museum. As an aside, as compared to the United States, most parking garages in Mexico have restrooms. Put Museo José Guadalupe Posada on your to-do list when visiting Aguascalientes. read more

Another great museum to visit while in Aguascalientes! Full of great art and history. Also the famous Jose Guadalupe Posada for his works and prints. Very interesting to check out! Even though I cannot read Spanish, I can make some words out here and there. The museum was clean and it's A/C'ed. They also had the printing machines there as well and what he used to make them. Every picture on the paper was carved on the print blocks (from what I was told and by the looks of it). Some, I've seen at the other museums as well. Had a great time and at the end, there's a little table where you create your own print by coloring over the paper on the print blocks. Great for the kids and even adults. read more
