Rivera lived here to age 6 before moving to MXCD where he flourished as a student n later master of art. The house is a representation of how it may have been when Rivera was a child, but we aren't here to look at his crib. The art collection here is a great overview of Rivera's wide breath of styles. You can see his homages to various styles n techniques (cubism, water colors, pencil, murals) yet infusing each w his own flare. A must when in GTO.

I had no idea that Diego Rivera was born in Guanajuato. We went on a day trip with tour guide Reyes Ortiz, owner of Airport Transfer and Tours of San Miguel de Allende. You can see my review of Mr. Ortiz on YELP as well. During Covid it's a little bit tough going to this museum because only five people can go in at a time into each room and some people move very slowly through the museum so just make sure you give yourself enough time. He won't want anybody over 65 and anybody below age 12 go in because of Covid and the extra risk. They are all wearing face shields and masks and taking temperatures as guests come in. It was 15 pesos a person which is about $1 or 50 cents each. I'm not good at conversion but it is a good price. The woman in the bookstore is absolute fantastic amazing lovely kind helpful and any other positive adjectives you can think of. They have a book for sale of these original works that many people have not seen by Diego Rivera for 200 pesos, around $10. Diego was so varied in his work and such a talented artist. This was very fascinating and interesting to see his work. Thank

A copy of Diego's work.

We had a free…read moreafternoon and after seeing on Trip Advisor that this was many travelers favorite spot, we decided to check it out. With no expectations we were delighted by this spectacular property. I would give the magical Museo Ex-Hacienda San Gabriel de Barrera gardens six stars and the manor, 4 stars. This hacienda was once a major world influence of silver. Built at the end of the 1600's for a Captain Gabriel de la Barrera, heir to the Valenciana silver mine, the grounds stretch over 22,000 square meters. The Hacienda is divided into 16 areas, complete with 17 gardens, all groomed to a different style surrounding the various manor buildings and small plazas. I walked through the various gardens toward the manor house. The weather started out sunny, then some gray clouds came and after a few drops, the sun reappeared. The property is a photographers dream. This place is a must see when traveling in the Guanajuato/San Miguel de Allende area.

Very good energy here! Do it!

Museo Iconográfico del Quijote - Lots of interesting & enjoyable art; great variety.

Chances of me ever reading Don Quixote are slim to nil so as I eyed the collection here I had to…read moreask the one I was with: "do you know the story of Don Quixote?" Luckily, he knew what amounted to the Don Quixote Cliff Notes and that was good enough. This here is one person's obsession - er, collection - of Don Quixote-related artworks. Who knew that it would make for such an interesting museum? As opposed to a style of art or an art period this collection can focus on any aspect of DQ's story, surreal or figurative. At one point the collection veers off into excellent artwork of a married couple and has seemingly nothing to do with Don Quixote. Surprise! This museum gave me far more than I was expecting simply due to the variety of art and art forms on display. It may be interesting to know the most basic things about the story of Don Quixote (literally, like 5 sentences worth) and then - assuming you enjoy viewing art - you're off to the races. This museum inspired me to think of other types of museums or art collections that could be assembled and I really enjoy anything that gets my creativity flowing. This place did. Learn a few basic things about DQ then go here.

I already knew that there was a Museum for Don Quixote but what I did not know was that it was for the Art of Don Quijote. When we visited the Museum with the ornate Don Quixote outside, needless to say, I was already humming the first bars from Man of La Mancha. It's super inexpensive to visit and get your ticket. There's a bookstore to the right which is not overly expensive. Matter of fact it's a dollar or two more than what you can find on Amazon. We were super fortunate to be in a very small group as our tour guide took us through the exhibits. It was super interesting and some of the pieces in the collection are one-of-a-kind. Don Quixote may not be for everyone but having seen Peter O'Toole in the 1972 production when I was a kid always stuck with me. I still remember it to this day. It was one of those lazy Saturday afternoons after the glorious morning of cartoons and my choice was ABC Wide World of Sports or Man of La Mancha. No surprise as watched the exploits of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza. I mean who could forget Sophia Loren's role of Dulcinea, Geesh. For you young ones, Let me tell a tale of grand musical movies, not counting animated movies, that ruled Hollywood from the 50s through the 70s Grease and All that Jazz is most likely the best last musicals. If you're in Guanajuato, do yourself a solid and visit the Museum, then pick up some books as souvenirs instead of magnets and keychains and live the impossible dream.

From below, you'll see the steep stairs beside the funicular. These are not available to climb. Rather, get yourself a one-way ticket and navigate the appropriate stairs/path to get back to the town's main street. It's impossible to get truly lost on the way down and once you get down you'll know how to get back up without the funicular if you later choose to do so (the walk up takes about 15 minutes). At the top of the Funicular are a series of shops and then, a bit further up, the al Pipila Monument. I did no research but was told by someone knowledgeable that al Pipila is Mexico's Paul Revere. More great photos can be snapped from the place right below al Pipila. Cheap and fun and easy to navigate, if you're in Guanajuato you should definitely try the funicular at least once.
