If you plan to spend a full day in Belem like Jamie W and I did, then I suggest visiting this contemporary museum but only if you have time after the essential stops like the Jerónimos Monastery. I just don't view the collection here as indispensable for modern art lovers. You can tell by the one-off nature of the exhibits that it started as a private collection, this one from a self-made billionaire businessman named José "Joe" Berardo. In fact, the museum was named after him when it first opened in 2007, but now it's officially called Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC/CCB). The museum is housed inside a massive concrete complex called Centro Cultural de Belém. On the upper floor, there are singular pieces from the likes of Warhol, Picasso, Dalí, Miró, and Lichtenstein. Less interesting to us were the lower floors where they dive deep into highly abstract, conceptual, and minimalist art. The labyrinthine layout is confusing to navigate, but you can skip sections entirely if you're not engaged with the exhibits you see like Jeff Koons' "Poodle" (Photo 9). That happened a lot with us. Admission is 15€, and there's a combo bookstore and cafeteria where we sat a spell and had the 2,5€ Iced Lattes (Photo 8). Even if you're not a fan of cubism, surrealism, etc., a visit is worthwhile for the beauty of the building itself and the views, which you can enjoy from either the second floor restaurant or the comfy outdoor chairs provided so you can sit and relax. Bonus: was not crowded on a beautiful Sunday in late May when downtown Lisbon was jammed with tourists. read more

A wonderful museum of the history of tiles in Portugal. Without a guide it would have been impossible to fully appreciate the experience. Our guide was excellent. The only thing that would have improved this experience would be expansion of the ladies restrooms. At least 30 women waited in line while men came and went easily. read more

Five stars for the amazing classic art I was able to enjoy here today. With COVID going on, masks are required for the entire visit and I believe that there are capacity limitations. Since I was here in mid-January and the weather was a little drizzly, the crowds were non-existent. Bonus for that! Exhibits are organized by style with rooms that include surrealism, pop-art, conceptual art and minimalist. I was able to enjoy my favorite Piet Mondrian but also a Calder mobile sculpture, Picasso, Modigliani, Pollock, Lichtenstein and more. Two hours for this slice of art that definitely hits me directly. Captions on the artworks in Portuguese and English. The museum has restrooms throughout and a free wifi. I recommend this contemporary/modern art museum 1000x over, and stand by the opinion. I had the choice between this and another one, but this was much better than waiting for Pastel de Belem or spending 6 Euro to go up the tower. First, the architecture of the outside is quite incredible, as it's situated within the CCB (Centro Cultural de Belém Foundation). The top floor is dedicated to a permanent exhibition that gives one a masterclass in Art History. As one room after another are traversed, the individual is transported back in time with eclectic (original) pieces that represent the era that is being discussed, in chronological order. Moreover, the descriptions were so aptly written to help the museumgoer see the connections between different artistic styles. On the bottom floor was a special exhibition from a master French artist, as well as a devastatingly haunting, but necessary glimpse into post-Holocaust lives. Along with that, the education continues as there's another section dedicated to more contemporary art. My only regret is wasting time in Porto at another contemporary art museum. Don't even bother and just wait for this one in Lisboa. read more

This was our 14th Art museum on our tour of Europe and I was not disappointed. The Berardo museum has several floors of art so make sure you plan for a couple of hours. It also gives different information about cost, we paid 5€ per person. Unlike a lot of the other museums it does give history information about the periods of art and why each section of art is different. This collection has many many famous artists which is awesome because it all was once a personal collection that grew into a museum. Man Ray, Warhol, Jackson Pollock, and Picasso are just a few of the artists that you can see. Then there is a current art floor with several lesser known but provocative pieces. I greatly enjoyed this museum and would love to go back. read more

This is an amazing museum on so many levels... but it's not just tiles but an amazing church / convent with stunning artifacts impeccably preserved. The museum juxtaposés 1500s geometric tiles with contemporary works to keep things lively. Beautiful cafe area. Very reasonably pieces. BOTTOM LINE: It's free. And it has AC for those hot Lisbon summers! Easily accessible with the #15 street car, you can make a day trip out to the West of Lisbon to visit the Jeronimos Monastery, snack at Pasteis de Belem, walk along the beautiful harbourfront, and check out some art. As it's been noted, this gallery houses a private collection of various modern and contemporary pieces of art. The space is well laid out, and I thought the collections were well curated. Right across the street from the monastery! We were surprised by how much we enjoyed this museum. It is a modern art museum, was as much fun as the MoMA in NY, or the Broad in LA. Very nice museum. The architecture of the building reminds me the Egyptian temple. Collection is large and mixed, a couple of piece are very very famous. A negative point is about the interactive art piece (where you can activate something to make the art piece alive), this is not well indicated and something they are turned off. If you like contemporary and modern art :take a visit to this museum. Its free and has a collection of many painting some more prominent than others. Its organized in chronological order by area but at some point it got confusing. As someone who doesn't speak the language it was difficult to under the full significance of the artwork. If you are into art or just like going to museums this one is a must. This holds the collection of entrepreneur Joe Berardo, he has been collecting works from the likes of Picasso, Dali, Lichtenstein, Warhol, among many others. And most of them are all here! The works of art used to be in show at Sintra's Museum of Modern Art, which was a very good venue in itself but too far away from the city centre and late 2007 the collection moved to a more permanent place in the Praça do Império, next to other great Portuguese treasures, like the Padrão dos Descobrimentos, Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, Archeological Museum, Torre de Belém, Palácio de S. Bento, Museu dos Coches, Maritime Museum, the Planetarium and the CCB (Centro Cultural de Belém). So you will be spoiled for choice if you go there. I would suggest going on a Sunday morning, a lot of museums in Portugal are free on that day and that time, so make good use of it. The museum has a strong design identity and it is shown by the layout of the interior building, everything is well pointed out and you have stewards all along the museum to show you and help you with whatever you want. This museum is an underrated treasure. It wasn't crowded at all and the exhibits were fantastic. One level was actually closed when I visited (preparing for a new exhibit), but I still found plenty to enjoy. Plus, the museum has free entry, free wi-fi, free bag check, lovely staff, air conditioning, and a Nespresso vending machine. I highly recommend visiting when you are in Belem. read more

This is a brilliant museum for modern and contemporary art. Even if you are not a big fan of the modern art exhibitions the museum has pure educational value. Both floors are very well structured by periods, tendencies and have detailed descriptions about the paintings, sculptures presented in every hall.
