Definitely a castle you should visit when you're visiting Lisbon. If you're staying in Lisbon, you'll see it when you are in the downtown area. Do you see it? Seeing a piece of Portuguese history in person is something I've always wanted to do. Since this castle is atop the city, it offers some of the best views of this bustling town. Well worth the hike up the hill and price of admission! I really enjoyed visiting Castelo de S. Jorge on one of our last days in Lisbon. The views from the top are spectacular. There's a small museum on the garden grounds which features information about the castle's former residents and very cool artifacts like pottery and even bones. I learned a lot about the castle and Lisbon itself including its roots in Islam which I found very interesting. The castle itself is merely ruins at this point but you can still climb up to many of the towers for even better viewpoints of the city below. The peacocks on the grounds were amazing too and we got to see baby peacocks! There's snacks and a gift shop too but we didn't stick around for more than the sightseeing. It was about 15 euros per person for entry, as far as I can remember. I'd recommend visiting this spot! read more

We wanted to see the Cadtle. Our hotel wasn't to far a few kilometers. We opted for the 28 Trolley for up to avoid the climb. It would have been faster to walk but this was an interesting ride and experience. We got off at the castle stop and made our way up to the entrance. No lines or wait. We did our own tour. The guided tour was full. A lovely complex with stunning views of the city and water. Plenty of places to sit and relax. I recommend walking the walls to get yourself oriented to Lisbon. Nice museum and gift shop. A lovely cafe (we did not visit). There are peacocks everywhere. I had no idea they climbed trees. You can hear them calling each other. This is 15 Euro entry. You can take an Uber to 3/4 of the way. There are buses that will take you to the top. There are many shops and ice cream and other things to stop and rest or take in the view. The employees at the ticket office are not too friendly. There is WIFI available but it only works in the ticketing office. Nice breeze and good views of Lisbon. The National Monument sits on a hill. Upon walking in, the Place-of-Arms square provides scenic views over the city and the river. The quadrangular layout of the castle mainly consists of ramparts and turrets, which you can walk the perimeter of after climbing up the stairs. It was windy that day, so the stairs were a little precarious to me. Besides the views, there were plenty of peacocks around for visitors to see. read more

Worth every penny! This was my favorite experience while visiting Lisbon. The views were incredible and it felt like I was dropped into another world. Bring comfy shoes because uber could only bring you so far up until you have to walk up the hills on your own. There is also many stairs within the castle. I loved seeing the beautiful peacocks just walking around everywhere. There is a cafe, ice cream shop and restaurant inside which was nice. Also a few bathrooms which I was thankful for! Holy guacamole. Bring your walking shoes, your climbing shoes, and make sure they have tread on them. You will be climbing up some serious hills. Thankfully, I took an uber to get me most of the way up. Unfortunately I still had to walk up several steep roads to get to the top. And wow, it is a serious workout. Make sure to take a moment to catch your breath if need be - and be careful because the streets can get slippery. I paid to gain admission so I could wander the castle grounds and take pretty pictures of the city. Peacocks roam around. Look, don't touch. Great views, an active archeology site, and beautiful landscaping for the top of a mountain (hill?) Well worth the climb. And remember, it may be quicker going down, but it's still steep. A must see when in Lisbon. Located on a steep hill it overlooks the city and the river giving you a unique perspective of the region. It is not an easy hike so be prepared to climb steep steps and winding streets. Once you make it to the top you will be glad you made the climb. The castle is large and has many interesting components. This castle was one of the only historical things we did on our trip but it really wow'd us. We got some of my favorite photos and the view was spectacular. We decided to walk and the hills were some of steepest more brutal hills in Lisbon. If you have the same ill-advised idea as us make sure you leave time for rest breaks and wear comfortable walking shoes. We had bought a Lisboa City pass & I highly recommend it because it's unlimited metro and city sites for a set amount of time. We picked it up at the airport and we activated it at the Castelo which was the first use. It was an easy process. One unexpected surprise of the castle was all the peacocks on the grounds. VISITED THE CASTLE FOR A SECOND TIME ON JULY 8, 2024 =============================================== The first time my husband, son and I visited this castle was on July 25, 2018. I know because I still have the photos on my phone. Our family member had hired a limo driver to take us there because parking in Lisbon is tricky. We had a loaner SUV, but knew better than trying to drive up to the castle. We ended up walking instead which was a workout since the castle is at the top of one of the highest hills. Sao Jorge Castle is a historic castle in the Portuguese capital. The castle dates back to the 2nd century BC. Since the 12th century the castle has served as a royal palace, a military barracks and is now a national monument and museum. I got a lot of great photos six years ago and earlier this week. The view from the castle is amazing so you should definitely check it out if you ever visit Lisbon. Tickets are 15 euros each. Definitely wear tennis shoes and really watch your step while walking on all the very old and uneven surfaces throughout the castle grounds. I tripped and really messed up my elbow, knees and hands even though I was wearing tennis shoes. A couple nice guards helped me with first aid. They said it happens all the time, so be forewarned. read more

Been to a fair share of castles but this one was very beautiful and scenic. Walking down into and through Alfama was fun too.

Nice looking castle but not much else to do , it has fantastic viewpoints and peacocks roaming the castle , there is also a room with a few windows to take pics and a viewpoint to take pics but it's not worth the ticket price at all. The museum / exhibition is just broken pottery from the ruins and nothing interesting. I would skip this one and go to sintra, the castles there are out of this world read more

Saint George's Castle is one of Lisbon's monumental gems and a great place to visit to see the city from high above. I took the famous Tram 28 to reach the area before walking the rest of the way up to the castle entrance. If you have mobility concerns, I recommend catching a ride to save your energy for the steps and hikes you'll do inside the castle. I visited on a Monday and fortunately there were few people visiting the grounds (although the bit of rain may be the reason). The views were epic as you can see everything from sea to city. It was a beautiful, picturesque way to view Lisbon. The castle grounds are vast and wide, offering many opportunities to climb up the walls for an even better view. In winter, it got a but nippy so best to take a light jacket as the winds do pick up in higher elevation. For €10, I thought it was worth it to get a cultural site experience. read more

Saint George's Castle is a historic castle in Lisbon. Like everything in Lisbon, it's located on top of a steep hill. I highly suggest to Uber up as far as the driver will take you. Originally, I went on a Sunday, it was so crowded and there were 3 cruise ships in port. A 2 hour wait to tour the castle, we decided to stay in the area and do a little shopping in some of the stores. Lots of nice shops with handmade Portuguese tiles, leather goods and an entire store just dedicated to sardines. Wandering around the area, we found a nice little restaurant with good sangria and the most breathtaking views of the city. We did tour the castle a few days later. Went back on a weekday in the afternoon and walked right up and purchased tickets. The castle dates back to the 11th century. The views and the scenery are well worth the cost of 10 Euros. The castle is beautiful and you will see plenty of peacocks walking around. I highly recommend seeing this even if it's just for the photo op. read more

Upon our arrival, we encountered an exceptionally long queue (line) awaiting entry. Surprisingly, the gate was closed, despite its official opening hours. It appeared that a film crew was in operation that morning. Consequently, we opted to bypass the queue, as it seemed like an ordinary tourist attraction featuring castle walls. Two weeks later, we found ourselves in the vicinity once again and decided to take a leisurely walk by to assess the current situation. To our delight, there was minimal queue, prompting us to purchase tickets. I am immensely grateful for this decision, as the castle offers far more than mere castle walls. It is steeped in history, and the most captivating aspect is the panoramic vistas from the castle's elevated positions. The entire complex took approximately one hour to traverse, allowing us to appreciate the 360-degree vistas, the historic cannons, and the remarkable architecture. If you harbor doubts about the value of the entry fee ($15 Euro per person at the time), I firmly believe that it was a worthwhile investment. read more

This is a must see when in Lisbon! It's on top of a hill where you could get a great view of the whole city! It's a really cool to walk around in and super fun! It is impossible to miss the Castle of Saint George, towering high above the city of Lisbon. Because it's the high ground, human occupation on the site can be traced as far back as the 8th century BC however the first fortifications don't show up until around the 1st century BC by the Romans. There are traces by Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, and Moors, before its conquest by the Portuguese in the 1147 Siege of Lisbon. The castle's plan is mostly a square and it was originally encircled by a wall but much of that exterior wall is gone. Today, the main entrance is a 19th century gate and that's where you'll buy your €10 ticket to enter. There is a mask requirement throughout the campus but when I was off in a corner outside and no one nearby, no one troubled me for taking it off. Lots of self-directed exploration. Climbing the stairs to the parapets, walking the walks and the courtyards, looking out over the city. I'd love to have seen more captions and explorations. If you're lucky, you'll not only have great weather (I did not today - it was quite overcast this morning) but you'll also be able to see the peacocks (they're beautiful). A popular tourist site. Crowded. One of the best miraduoros (view points) in the Alfama district. Walking the castle parapets is physically challenging with steep and somewhat treacherous stairways. The museum is worth a quick walk through. The garden is tiny and looked pitiful during my visit. If this is your first visit to Lisbon I'd suggest this place is a must see. And after you spend a couple of hours here there's no need to ever return. read more

We finally made it INTO Castelo de S. Jorge, after by-passing it a few weeks ago because of the humongous crowds queuing to get in. It was worth the wait to finally see what all the hubbub was about. To be honest, nothing quite compares to the castle in Sintra, or other "miradouro" spots throughout Lisbon; however, this one does boast the best views of entire Lisbon. There is no "inside" to see, so everything is simply marveling at the architecture, and mostly the views. Other than the castle walls and such, it does boast a high-priced restaurant--absolutely nothing for vegans--a barista kiosk, and an out-of-place ice-cream "truck." If it weren't for the 5-star views, this would simply be an OK 3-star tourist spot. As such, I'm giving Castelo de Saõ Jorge a 4 rating as a middle-ground rating. (The church that was outside of the castle was small, but awesomely beautiful, as many churches in Portugal are in its over-the-top Heavenly fervor.) :) read more

If you have car, you will not able to park here. Because the castle ground and city are designated limited access. So you have find a parking spot below the castle and restrict city access. You need to do your homework if you have your own car. The visit include an up hill walk to the castle. Seem like many tourists has done that. You can avoid this walk if you hire an taxi which can access the restrict area. The castle began with the permanent display of the museum. Then you explore the entire castle ground. You need to have 1.5 to 2 hour to reach the destination by walk to the castle and explore the ground. There is separate ticket to explore the additional secret castle area. I super debated whether to visit Castelo de Sao Jorge but I was up early and hungover and had nothing else to do with my life and I'm so glad I went. It's a beautiful place to spend some time in the morning and the views are so worth it. Ticket sales open at 9:00 a.m. and tickets are €10.00. I got in line maybe ten minutes before opening and was roughly the fifth person in line. But you want to get there early because the line gets long and the castle gets crowded. I was by myself, so only needed about an hour to explore, and by 10:00 a.m. it was getting too crowded for my taste. It's busy at opening, but do-able. I would not come late, unless you deal well with other people. I do not. The only issue is that the wine cart will not be open at that time. I explored on my own, but there are guided tours. The views of Lisboa are absolutely amazing. Panoramas abound, but you really want to climb into the turrets and walkways of the castle to see the city and appreciate the ruins. The grounds are well-attended and you can even see peacocks. The paths are rocky and hilly, but I would rate it as easy. The gift shop was great and reasonably priced, too. It's easy to get to the castle by public transportation. I took Tram 28 to Praca da Figueira and then hopped on the bus in the direction of the castle from there. The bus gets you closer to the castle than the tram and it's a pretty quick ride. The castle is the last stop. When visiting Lisboa, I highly recommend spending a morning at Castelo de Sao Jorge. read more

This being my first castle, I was fairly underwhelmed. Not sure what I thought it would be, but this wasn't it. I would say I expected more given the entry price of 10 euros. Overall the best parts were the entertaining peacocks who live on the castle grounds and the exhibit where I learned the origins of the tile installed on a lot of buildings and homes in Lisbon. We came here as one of the must do things in Lisbon. We had a nice view of this castle from our hotel window so it seemed only fitting that we visited it during our time in the city. At $10 euro a person it wasn't too expensive but you really don't get much for your money other than the stunning panoramic views of the city. We were given a map with very little detail or explanation. It was fun to roam around. I got to feed a few stray cats or castle cats should I say. It is a bit of a hike to get up to the castle - you can get close by tram (when it is running) or by one of the elevators but either way you need to walk uphill the final bit. There were no English tours late in the day so we wandered about - a tour would have been helpful in understanding the history. The castle is interesting but the views down to Lisbon are even better. One of the famous landmarks in Lisbon that sould not be passed up. The views looking out towards the entire city are absolutely breathtaking! You will do A LOT of walking (which is the absolute best way to experience the area IMHO) So wear comfortable shoes(ladies, NO HEELS!) Most of your walk will be on an incline, as Lisbon is the city that was built on seven hills, so if it's too much of a distance to walk, you can risk jumping on Tram 28, but I would advise you not to jump on if it is packed, as it is a pickpocket's paradise where they tend to work in teams to snag your hard earned vacation funds. Otherwise, flag down a tuk-tuk, or grab a cab that'll drop you right at the entrance to the castle. The grounds of the castle are beautifully maintained, and if you're lucky, you can spot a peacock and/or watch a medieval show put on by the workers. Be very careful, especially if you're one who is deathly afraid of heights as some of the areas of the castle do not have railings for support. Take your time, explore every area, enjoy the views, and come prepared with allergy medicine! One of the best times to come here is in the afternoon, about a few hours before sunset, and by the time you're done, you'll be hungry enough as local restaurants will start opening up after their siesta. Lisbon's immense 11th century castle might not be as fancy as some other European castles, but its still a fascinating sight to see. Despite going through several sieges and an 18th century massive earthquake that devastated most of Lisbon, the castle has remained well intact over the centuries. You're welcome to wander around mostly freely throughout these old premises; careful though, you could really fall and hurt yourself if you're clumsy. Portugal isn't the most popular European city, but that also keeps tourist crowds on the smaller side and more tolerable. This combination of smaller crowds and a well preserved ancient castle makes this a photographer's dream. For only €8.50, I found myself entertained and fascinated for about 90 minutes or so. I could've spent more time in the museum section, but TRAVEL TIP: Its a steep hike to get up here! And I didn't bother with the buses. But for reasons beyond me, Uber is really cheap in Lisbon, I'm doubtful the local Uber drivers make any money. From my hotel, and due to traffic, my semi lost Uber driver took about 4km and just under 20 minutes to get herethe hotel...and my total fare was only €3.60! I left him a €2 tip... read more

I walked to this spot and yes, it was an uphill climb but along the way, I saw many beautiful views. It's also just a great way to explore the area, especially with some friends to accompany you! Tickets are 10 euros and there was a line when I went but it moved quick. Soon after getting the ticket, my group and I went past the turnstiles and was presented with a spacious area, full of trees. Along the edge was the view of Lisboa that was breathtaking. You were able to see all the colorful houses and the bridge in the distance! It wasn't crowded at all either so you could definitely get some nice photos in. The castle itself was really cool. There were many paths leading to different spots of the castle. It was all outdoors so as you went up a set of stairs, you were able to see one side of Lisboa. The steps are uneven and some may even be a bit steep so definitely be careful but it's definitely manageable. It also brings you up really high but the views definitely impressed me. read more
