The bathrooms up by the parking lot were easily accessible, and the ramp down to the playground was easy. My kids had a great time playing here for as long as I let them, and we enjoyed the brief walk over to some picnic tables. They loved playing in the creek, too, and would've stayed longer if we didn't have to get going. Highly recommend.

And lots of tall, shady pines to eat, play, or relax under. No marked parking; just pull over parallel along the hemisphere drive that goes through the front of the park. There's a big grass field that is up the slope at the back of the park. I'm not sure whether it's officially part of the park or not, but plenty of space there to kick a ball or even swing a few with a bat. Be careful of the abundant poison ivy growing among the trees at the edges.

We have camped here twice, once in the fall and this time in late March. Both were unique in their own way with the fall trip taking the cake. On both trips the morning sun greeted us ablaze with colors only to be rivaled by its sunset as the long day closed upon us. Beautiful. Serene. The camping reservations are easy through the SC website and the prices very reasonable. Most sites have a view of the lake and several are right on it. We did notice this time (spring) that several locals booked their family vacation here during spring break. Sadly, several lugged all their crap from home with them: refrigerators, large grills, full-size kitchen ovens, awnings, boats, golf carts, bikes, dogs, and kids. The center of the campground looked like a hillbilly hoedown. People were kind and respectful, but damn, it's camping people! Overall, we like it here and we will return. Got the campfire just a smokin' on my "Give 'em a whirl" meter. Camp here (just leave your sh*t at home).

There is a lot to see between the river, trees, birds, and other trail visitors. Super easy to park around the businesses near the Pumphouse and then set off. As we were coming back, there were people putting kayaks into the water, also some folks in the water doing some fishing. Overall a great option for getting out into nature. Everything is paved and there some some well maintained wooden bridges to cross. Wide enough for two way traffic and benches a lot the way for breaks.

This is a fairly remote site, and the roads were not in good condition when I arrived, with a…read morebridge out to the north that would require a major detour. The site itself had a history that wasn't quite what I expected; after its days as a working plantation, it was rented to sharecroppers for many years before the area was bought by the National Forest Service and a large number of trees were planted with the intent to create a new forest (a success, by the looks of things), and the site of this mansion was later made into a park. Wandering around the site was free; a guided tour of the mansion itself did cost some money. The site was the home of a governor shortly before the Civil War, so the focus is on Civil War history. I had the run of the place given the frigid weather, and I found the historical context interesting, though there seemed to be a lot of gaps in recorded history and a lot of speculation in the responses I got. Nonetheless, you'd still get an interesting and nuanced picture even with the uncertainty. There were some small trails, but I didn't quite make it to the river. Without the tour, there wasn't really enough to be worth driving an hour or more to get here (and I was puzzled that some people apparently left without seeing the mansion). It wasn't the best SC park I've been to, but they've all been interesting.
