Axelrod's is Closed, has been for a few year now. And really, not without reason…read more My stepfather's business always got sheet music and books from axelrod's, but eventually the owner (Jackie, I believe) became unreliable and over priced, he really had no choice but to order online to ensure he had legal copies of music for students in a timely manner. THe final straw he had with axelrods is that I was looking for an instrument, the owner took us into a freezing cold back room filled with violins and other string instruments....now to me having been a band geek, you are not supposed to subject instruments to overly hot or cold conditions as they can crack or warp. To boot she was asking three times was Robert's music quoted me for a few year old instrument for one made during the reagan administration.

Axelrod Lives On in Johnston…read more This Rhode Island cornerstone used to be across the street from Avery Piano and what a great pair they made. The old location was in an ancient building with 900 year old creaky wood floors and lots of charm. Inside were racks and racks full of music for every instrument and every genre. Probably every kid in the state that was in High school band knows Axelrod. The new store located out in the sticks is bigger, has less charm, but still has the biggest collection of sheet music I've ever seen. Less instruments before, but they're doing everything they can to survive in an internet shopping world, where kids play soccer instead of the saxamaphone. Well hear this sports fans- Charlie Parker, Hendrix, and Jelly Roll Morton had a LOT more fun than Pele, Babe Ruth, or Heisman. They can special order many things, if not everything.

This shop doesn't have that corporate sanitation feel. everything is in its proper place but with a more eclectic atmosphere. It doesn't seem to fit in with the surroundings and what your used too when you think of a music store in or near taunton, by that i mean, its almost too good for the area. All and all, the 15 minutes I spent inside was very enjoyable. and i recommend this place based on that criteria.

I can't recommend this place enough!…read more I spent most of my life sick in bed so I wasn't capable of making my dreams of going around playing live music a reality. I walked in to buy some strings while their open mic was going on a year ago and tried it myself... I've been coming every week since. It's allowed me to live out my rock star fantasy in front of the most supportive and loving crowd ever. I've met so many friends here, it's more than just an open mic and a music store, it's a community and a family. I've played drums, bass, and guitar here with so many different local musicians in so many genres, it has helped me to grow and develop my skills for each instrument. It has, without exaggeration, changed my life. If open mics aren't your thing and you just want a place to buy an instrument, it's great for that too. Unlike bigger chains like Guitar Center where they just want your money and kick you out, you can have a long conversation with the people working here to make sure you're purchasing the instrument right for you. If you want lessons or you have a kid you'd like to get into music, this is the place for that, too. Often you'll see the Rick's Music World students play at the open mics and I used to think "A student? Eh, this won't be too good" and they always blow me away. Whether you're looking for a music community to change your life or you just want to buy a guitar, Rick's is the place to go.
