From Canandaigua the trail runs parallel to…read morea modern set of railroad tracks before crossing over a creek and running through the countryside for a while before hitting this area where there are about 20 or so Winnie the Poo quotes and decorations...at the time I couldn't decide whether that part of the forest trail seemed artsy or just plain creepy, but whoever set all of that up definitely deserves an A for effort! If you're parked in Canandaigua I recommend staying on the trail while on your way back because Route 20 does not have very much shade at all and I ran into some trouble with sunburns. Hope to experience the rest of the trail sometime in the future. Of note: Route 20 has a lot of really cool small farmer markets that are worth checking out. I have very fond memories of those places.

I haven't walked the whole thing...yet. But I plan to. It is a V shape path and good for cyclists too. Part runs parallel to Rt 20. The other part runs from Stanley to the Thruway.

He gave us some tips about where we might see certain types of birds and he was absolutely spot on!! We spotted a pair of bald eagles in the tree line and after a 5 minute wait or so, they treated us to a flight right over the car to soar over the water on the other side of the drive. It is absolutely amazing that this wonderful resource is free to enjoy. The visitors center is accessible to those using mobility equipment and the drive is a wonderful way to enjoy the wildlife without a hike.

I normally walk with my friends 3-4 miles so we had to go back and forth a couple of times. On this hot day it was good to have a tree lined trail. The wild flowers were in bloom and the sound of the water made it feel relaxing. I will be back.

Needless to say, we did and the kids had a blast. Then we walked to the lake shore to check out the park area. There are some cottages to rent (though we were informed not overnight???) There is a dock, basketball court and playground here as well. Looked as though a YMCA day camp is held here during the summer. Our friend warned that the lake drops off very deep, very fast and we didn't allow our kids to go in. Fun time.

Eventually we pinpointed the turnoff to it's gravel parking area! The next morning we brought the "woof-pak" for still on the 1.0 mile looping trail. A daily easy hike. About half mile in there's a cooling break on the east shore of Cayuga Lake. Van Riper is a well maintained wooded nature preserve. The trail clearly marked with blue blazes down and back up the gentle slopes of the protected tract of land. Look for the road sign and pull in for a pleasant wooded stroll.

I was trying to rent just a few days into October, and lucked out with this place upon a referral from another rental service. Just needed a boat for relax on the water for a few hours, and this did the job. The owner, Hunter, was a great guy and very down to earth. Pricing was in line with other places, and the boat was in good shape. My standards are admittedly low as our pontoon further downstate is in 'functional' shape, so this was the freaking Taj Mahal by comparison. Very efficient per gallon of gas too. Was even able to dock at a winery down the lake to grab lunch. Would rent here again in a heartbeat.
