Clearly it has a devoted following of natives that frequent the place. Because I was a foreigner, I was really intimidated walking in. From a food perspective, I was less impressed. I sought this place out because their fried chicken is highly recommended by some foodies that I respect. That is not to say it was bad in any way. I just did not find that it blew me out of my socks. Located on the edge of Binondo, it is easy to find because of its bright red signage. When walking in, there are about a dozen or so vinyl booths that can seat up to 6. I felt bad taking an entire booth up for my party of 1. The menu is simple and I wanted to try a few things so I ordered their "Fine Meal" which consists of soup, a single piece of chicken, a large scoop of fried rice, 2 fried gau gee (won tons), and a large serving of soft noodles. The food was all good but surprisingly the chicken (seemed more roasted to me than fried) was the least memorable thing on the plate. It wasn't bad but I came there specifically for the recommended chicken so I was expecting it to stand out which it did not. What I found I really liked was the soup and one of the sauces on the table which was gloppy and thick and faintly sweet but had a distinct deeply chicken stock flavor. I also loved the nuggets of dark protein in the noodles which I thought were beef bits but turned out to be chicken offal. The irony surprise when biting through the soft noodle was a great contrast and I wish more places made noodles like this. All in, I was stuffed and it only set me back $300 Philippine pesos (about $5 USD). You can't eat a crappy fast food meal in the US for that price so having a wide variety of scratch made chicken and offal with sides for that price is pretty epic. In the US, our meal would easily be double that amount. The ambiance is old skool as you would expect and filled w/ locals. Our waiter was super nice and spoke good English after I politely asked, "Marunong ka ba mag español o ingles? (Do you speak Spanish or English)". I would def return to RL the next time I return to Manila. They also serve dim sum earlier in the day. However, be prepared for a lot of traffic in Binondo. They also do offer congee but only from 6 to 9am or until supplies last. I don't really like congee but I find theirs really good. As with any really good authentic chinese food in Manila area, just don't expect much on the resto's ambiance as it looks like it has not been renovated since it was open. The ambiance of this place reminded me of a bruce lee movie I watched not to long ago. This was a safe heaven for being comfortable away from the heat. I would definitely come back again. The food was well worth it. Delicious! Pricing was cheap for all entrees except the lobster entree. They got me on that one. I did not understand the cost at the time of order.
