Fair warning, this is going to be a long review. I found Maria through my EAP program at work and ultimately ended up retaining her for estate petitioning. Background: My grandfather passed and his sister (my great aunt) was refusing to read the will or settle his estate. I know he has a will because when he was living, he told me so. Because my great aunt was being difficult, I decided to seek legal help. I had a consultation with Maria where I told her everything I knew and was told; including my great aunt's temperament in all of this. She had also made herself joint on my grandfather's account after his dementia onset which inevitably would be the main downfall. After I spoke with Maria, I was sent everything to sign and pay but I had a few questions. Here's where things get rough. Jas, her paralegal, (I think?) took some time off and I didn't realize she did, so I was waiting over a week for clarifications on the contract that was sent. As it turns out, I was sent the incorrect contract. This delayed me proceeding which was frustrating, but that was sorted out. Fast-forward, the draft was sent to me after some time and I went through to proofread. There was a very basic typo that no one caught, but also a sentence that was missing words which I didn't catch until after it was sent. We are human and all make mistakes, but two typos with three people (aside from myself) reviewing seems a little ridiculous. Fast-forward again to after Maria spoke with my great aunt. When I was debriefed, Maria told me she left her notes at home (I guess that's where she was when they spoke?) and told me what was said by memory. From what I can gather, none of the docs were collected because my great aunt was joint on the account. Maria also told me to contact my aunt to give my banking details as she was ready to close it out. This made me mad for two reasons: 1. I initially asked during the consultation to not have to be in contact with my aunt at all and 2. I was now being charged a second retention fee for another letter to be sent to my aunt with my banking info. Aside from that, my aunt lied about there not being a will and I feel I just wasn't listened to when it came to what I previously disclosed to Maria. Even after all of that I agreed to go forward with another letter and she said I could pay after I was paid by my aunt. After following up about 3 times, no one ever answered me about the new letter. I ended up telling them to disregard and now I am left to do what I have been avoiding...one of the main reasons why I even retained Maria...contacting my aunt. This will probably end up how it did when I tried to handle this without legal help, so I essentially wasted $500 of which I don't have. Please find another attorney. read more
