JVE is a Title I school, which means that it receives…read moregrants in order to provide a great education for kids from all walks of life so that they meet "challenging state academic standards"*. Which means that when my daughter, Ronni, was struggling with reading, she got the extra help, and she is now reading above her expected reading level. Plus, in 2013, JVE received the honor of being named a "National Title I Distinguished School". Which means that they did what they set out to do- got kids the education that they needed. Which means that they were one of the schools in the top one percent- yes, one percent- in the nation to do so. JVE teachers do not mess around. So, education is great in general at this school. The Pre-K is super. Those rugrats can get bussed if you ask, and they get dismissed at three p.m. Ronni loved it. Ditto for Kindergarten and on up. Kids are challenged and become math freaks and history buffs. Ronni gives me daily math quizzes. She has been doing small science experiments that create huge messes. Yep, she's trucking! This school has free breakfast, and a reduced or free lunch if you qualify. They have services for "Exceptional Children" (autism, visual and hearing problems, emotional or intellectual disabilities, speech problems, and traumatic brain injuries). They got ELL ("English Language Learners"), which is big in my book. (My dad came to the United States speaking not one word of English. He does now, and became an electrical engineer along the way.) AIG ("Academically or Intellectually Gifted) is offered, too. And after-school care and summer camp to boot. They do come attached with a reasonable price tag, but, as a parent, you can work harder or play harder when your kids are still at school. Sometimes special math, science, and reading nights are held in the evenings. Musicals every year. Ronni has stopped lip syncing and has graduated to almost-fainting at the musicals. In third grade, the kids start playing recorders. Art, and I am proud to say that Ronni's art has been shown in the county art show for the past several years. P.E. is much loved, errant basketballs and all. Guidance classes take place, as well as book swaps. And don't forget library! I always catch Ronni reading her library books. There is an on-site therapist, which is excellent, and a school psychologist. Every year, the fifth graders go to Washington D.C. They come back more mature and exuberant for even more learning. JVE's principal is simply amazing. Our kids's education is her passion, and she does a fine job with our future. Most of the teachers are terrific. You can reach out to them, and they help. When I thought that Ronni had a learning disability, they got right on the investigation. When Ronni had an illness that resulted in a lot of missed school days, they understood, and made sure that she reached milestones at a crucial time in her schooling. Reported bullying is dealt with swiftly and justly. I have to hold back sadness and anger when I think about what some kids- what my kids- have to go through and went through. It is reality, but one that I will always try to effect with wisdom, humor, and slipped slang. Like: I am happy that some bullies are out of my kids' lives and are on on the road to juvie. ("Juvie" in that statement is purposeful slang.) Yeah, some teachers are tough. Some can mostly be wonderful, but have an irrational moment from time to time. Some don't get high-functioning autism and find it hard to connect with kids like that. Some teachers forge across that chasm, and try to make things easier. I am glad that the teacher that made my daughter sit on the floor is gone. Some of these aforementioned facts are not abnormal or isolated. They happen in public schools across the country. You want a kid who knows that Abraham Lincoln had a tough childhood? Or one that knows the "new math" that leaves my mind reeling? Then put 'em in JVE. They will come out with so much knowledge that you will feel, like, well, not smarter than a fifth grader. My oldest son was fine without preschool and I was able to teach him a lot at home until he went to kindergarten. My middle son, however, was unwilling to learn from me. He has a lot of energy and I felt a preschool would be really good for him. So when we moved to Hendersonville I began researching preschools and narrowed it down to 3 different preschools where I was willing to send my son. Two out of the three schools would not take my son because he was not potty trained and was 3 years old. Discouraged, I called Fran at Creative Beginnings and asked if they had any openings in their 3-year old classroom. When she said they did, I anxiously asked if they accept children who are not potty trained. She said that they sure did. I was surprised and excited. I went straight to the church to pick up a registration packet. Upon meeting my son's teachers at the orientation, I was sure that we had ended up in the right school for us. His teachers are so kind, personable, and they LOVE the kids. They really genuinely love my son. The activities are wonderful. Every month I have a calendar of what they'll be doing each day all the way down to which day they'll be finger painting and working with scissors. My son comes home with projects and new songs all the time. He has blossomed so much this year. The teachers are encouraging and even helped him to potty train with lots of love and encouragement and not just for my son! I needed their love and encouragement too. When he finally started going on the toilet over winter break he insisted on calling his teachers to let them know and they praised him over the phone. Every day my son tells me that Miss Linda and Miss Carolyn love him. And I know that they do too! I cannot say enough positive things about this preschool. I highly highly recommend to anyone!

I've had the good fortune of getting to know a couple of them personally and I have found them to be some of the most upstanding people I've met since I've moved to Knoxville. The facilities are clean, the kids have a structured routine of daily activities geared towards their specific age group (each age group is separated into their own rooms), and they get plenty of time to run around outside (or in the gym if it's cold/rainy). They offer a weekly Music 'n' Motion class you can sign your child up for and they often have parties for the kids to celebrate birthdays or the holidays. They also recently participated in the Fantasy of Trees parade down at the convention center. My only complaint is that the daily reports communicating to the parent(s) what their child did and how they behaved is a little inconsistent. However, the teachers are always willing to talk to you personally about how your child is doing. All in all, I'm thankful to have found such a great place for my son to be while I work and go to school.

This happened to my friend there:…read more "My daughter had another 4-5 year old attempt to penetrate her with his finger at Cozy Kids Daycare yesterday (not show and tell, not just touch, but go down low and attempt to press his finger inside her). Cozy Kids Daycare (Specifically April Bean, the owner) said that a talk with the parents and a note home was sufficient. It was not a sufficient response for me. I have removed my daughter from the daycare effective immediately. I have recommended them time and time again. But when I came in to talk with April this morning I was met with resistance and confrontation. She is always so kind and sweet, however this morning I saw a side of her i've never seen. It's like she came prepared to contest me. She was so bothered that I actually came in to talk about this situation and have something done about it. I can not accurately articulate my lividity but I have filed a police report and hopefully DCS can figure out how a child that young knows about a girls private parts... Why does this child want to stick his finger inside... Why did he know to wait until they were in a play "tunnel" to do it? Ava is fine but my concern is for the other child now and the fact that Cozy Kids daycare did not take my situation seriously. Yes I wanted the offending child removed or i said I was removing Ava. April's response: "That's fine." My response, "I have filed a police report and DCS has been informed. April's (verbatim) response: "You think they're gonna do anything?" Yes. I do. I think they will investigate and make sure the other child is in a safe situation. I think they will look out for the best interest of the children and do a formal investigation. I didn't want the other child "prosecuted" obviously, but this is not something to be taken lightly and a child who would forcibly offend like this, should be separated, until details can be confirmed, from another opportunity to offend until he has been rehabilitated. I thank the Lord that our daughter knew to tell on this child immediately. We have sent 3 kids through their daycare and have been very happy and always felt like our kids were safe. But after seeing how they handled this situation, I am rescinding every referral I have ever given this daycare. Me and Laurie have been up all night and had to leave church after Ava explained to Laurie what happened because she broke down on the spot. I'm really glad they had the air compressor on the door as I walked out because I probably would have broken it when I went to shut it. Any questions, feel free to message me."

This is the only facility with hydro rider- a spin class in the pool. It fills up fast, so call and reserve a bike, and bring your own towel. Cansler is a great facility and the Y staff is very friendly. On my visits, it was not as crowded as my usual Y and parking was not a problem. It's a shared lot with O'Connor Senior Center and there's an overflow lot across Jessamine. Just remember to bring your towel as they don't have towels. I highly recommend Cansler if you are looking for a fitness canter
