The door staff are occasionally rude, the bar staff always serve the pretty girl before the bald man, the on floor staff are generally more than abrupt when it comes to throwing you off the balcony (in to the bar, not _off_ the balcony)... At this point you'd be forgiven for thinking that I hate The Sky Lounge. The truth is that if it wasn't for the drinks I honestly would, but the cocktails here are amazing - with the Mojito and French Martini's being amongst the best I've had in Leeds... and probably much further afield than that too. Arrive early, avoid any staff that you don't absolutely have to talk to in order to be served, and be prepared to wait for your drinks to be made... then sit back, relax and enjoy!

Now this is grand to the extreme. This mother is one stylish player with decadent furnishings and a sophisticated feel. What's more you get tables that light up, built in ice buckets and a real baby grand piano. To make me even giddier, they do fizz by the glass. Is this place for real? You don't even have to move because a delightful hostess will see to your every need (within reason). The drinks list is awesome too. If money is no object then go for a deluxe Champagne. Or try one of the zillion or so cocktails that will blow you away. If you want aged rums, no problem. Plus, you'll find some of the finest cognacs. James Bond wouldn't look out of place here. The food isn't bad either but I'm singing this little babies praises for some serious drinking action. Make sure the credit card isn't maxed out though; you'll need every penny you can muster. Extreme to every level but marvellous if costly.

I can't speak for what it's like late on a weekend night, being as I tend to avoid the copious crowds in favour of a quieter spot generally, but early on a Friday night the place was already buzzing. Not too busy that you couldn't get to the bar, but not so quiet you felt wrong for drinking and having a bit of a party. I love the stylings, with the curiosities and wooden back bar shelves, and any bar that devotes itself to tequila is a happy place for me. This wouldn't have been the case previously, but I've something of a new affection for margaritas and shots of tequila with the green stuff to chase. (I still can't remember what it's called, but it's lime-y, chilli and delicious.) The array of cocktails available for the special cocktail week were all great, all tequila based, and all very tempting. Being early I requested a longer drink, and that was what I was given - a Pineapple something (forgive the memory loss) and it was really tasty. Very tequila-y still, but a good balance of pineapple, little pepper (?) flakes, and tequila. I must say, I'm a fan. And I'm still fondly looking forward to coming back for some more Mexican delights, as the food here is marvellous. It ticks all the boxes: good bar staff, good drinks, good food, good décor. There is a long bar running along one side, a wide empty space which separates the 'cages' which house the table tennis tables from the bar and at the far end some snooker tables. Pool Tables, Table Tennis and tables for Beer Pong are available. Good atmosphere with a number of people enjoying themselves. Having had a couple of rounds of drinks and been playing beer pong, the whole experience was ruined by an over zealous member of staff who claimed the ladies in the group were having too much fun. Having won at Beer Pong they decided to cheer to celebrate their victory - no different to any of the other groups. However this obviously upset the over zealous barman who informed us we were too loud and to keep the noise down. Needless to say we left and then took out custom elsewhere. Don't think any of us will be going back and I doubt I'd recommend it.

It's light and airy, given the huge windows, and the tables are spaciously laid out for groups, solo coffee drinkers, and couplets to arrange themselves. There are 60s style tables and chairs, low standing long wooden blocks, comfy cushioned benching, and groovy bar stools. Top tip: if you've a laptop, there are electric outlets abound to plug in, and naturally, free wifi. The back wall displays plentiful curious prints and paintings, there's wallpaper with pineapples on it, and even a tiled bit of wall that kids are welcomed to deface - Outlaws will even supply the pens. Delightful phrases such as 'Darwin Rules' and 'it's really hot today!' currently decorate the wall. To eat and drink, you have an array of hot drinks (the usual suspects) and a curious menu, offering up toasted sandwiches, home made stew, sushi (from Sushiboy) and salads. If you're more into cake, the bar has a myriad of gooey goodness. My personal recommendation is the spongy raspberry offering, whose name I do not know. Get involved in a bit of that, with an Americano on the side, and you'll be a happy chap. Bored? No probs. They've all the board games you could want to while away a few hours. And don't even get me started on how cool the music is - these guys know their chill out. (I realise it's not to everyone's taste, but I'm a fan!) Also, try the home made stew, it's warming and awesome. One last thing - ask about the magic till, if you've a small child with you. They'll love it. The Outlaws bar: By night, this place transforms into a cosy hub of creativity, music and cool. They've a range of regular events that are most worth checking out, more notably, their DJ nights. Their Baleraric social is something to put in the diary, with world famous DJs performing fantastic sets, and of course -you can enjoy regular evenings of excellent music from Joe's Bakery and co. The monthly performance poetry night, Sticks And Stones, is another awesome event to get booked in. Expect a host of wordly musings from the open mic-ers, waxing lyrical in hip-hop style, thoughtful abandon, and hilarious commentary. Every month features a highly regarded poet, and now I've been lucky enough to have seen Mark Grist in the flesh. The drinks are ultra cool, with a select few cocktails and spirits on offer, alongside Brooklyn Lager and Estrella on draft, Brewdog, Anchor Steam, Belle Rose and more in bottles, and a varied amount of guest beers appearing depending on the season. Prices, of course, are a little higher with such premium offerings - but, this isn't a complaint as such. I like good beer, if possible, excellent beer. I don't expect to get that for £2.50. In the evening, when the place is full, there's an interesting effect where the windows steam up - even that is cool, as it feels like you're enveloped in a secret blanket of awesome. So, there you have it. Most of the things I love, rolled into one great big hug of a hang out. Wifi and power, check. Good coffee and lush cake, check. A range of good food for lunch, check. High end beers, check. Interesting and artful events, check. Quirky vintage décor, check. Amazing music, check. Good people? Don't even doubt it for a second.

The bar is small but spacious, mirrors complimenting the decor along with disco balls and bottle-storage globes dotted about the room. The seating is comfy to lounge upon, and the windows make the most of the limited light stolen by the NCP car park opposite. The Yacht Club has an extensive selection of drinks, ranging from fruity teas to more spirits I've ever seen crammed on a shelf; apart from one snag. As a whisky drinker, I asked if they had Jack Daniels Honey Whisky in, and the bartender was puzzled, offering a cheeky quip of, "we have Jack Daniels, and honey?". The bartenders are charming lads who keep the place clean and tidy while retaining the laid-back atmosphere - one of them had Facebook open on his laptop behind the bar! The drinks are kind of pricey, but you would expect it from bars of the type. The food is great too - I had a sandwich and it was the best I've had in Leeds; soft bread and great quality cheese resting on a crisp salad. The only bad thing about the place is the bartender from next door's Rebel Pin-Up who storms through the bar from time to time with a look of pure anger on his face, and I promised that I wouldn't bring the Society of Young Publishers into this review! My first thought was YESSS!!!! It'll be like the amazing nights I get to have every Christmas, but I can have them any time I want! But then I stopped and thought - would this ruin the novelty of singing along to many an anthem played by the wonderful Manny and his oompah band? Would it actually take some of the joy out of one of my highlights of the year? I chose to give it a go eventually, and have now been twice. I've taken in the experience after work on a weeknight when it's a little quieter, and also on a full on weekend evening when you get the full experience. The weekday evening came first, and left me wanting. The drinks are expensive - around £8 for the cheapest stein I think they were, and I had to wait for my drink for way too long considering there were only a couple of people in the queue, and the bar staff weren't very nice when I eventually did get served. They weren't rude or anything, but there were no smiles and didn't seem to care how long it took for anyone to get their drinks. Fortunately the place itself looks wonderful - almost like a proper beer hall but smaller. This saved it from being a bit of a nightmare first trip! Anyway, after being really quite unimpressed I nearly gave up on the place for good, but decided I should try it out at the weekend before I do. Fortunately, this was MUCH more like it! First of all, the staff were far more on the ball, and seemed to be enjoying themselves a little more. The drinks were no better, but the novelty of the stein was still there. But most importantly, the atmosphere was completely changed. Once this place gets packed out, everyone is clearly up for a big silly night of singing and glass clinking (although the latter is discouraged!). Once the oompah band came out I was back to loving the experience again. So, if you were to head into the Bierkeller at any other time than a Friday or Saturday night, I'd knock a star off my score. BUT if you do go on a Friday or Saturday, add one on. Once the atmosphere kicks in it's a joy to be there, but bear in mind you'll probably have to book seats in advance as we did.

It was mid-afternoon so I knew it was unlikely that we'd see the full musical show or get the full atmosphere, so we were just expecting a pleasant pub experience. What we had didn't come close. The venue itself looks like a lot of fun - long wooden benches, ceiling beams, brick archways, It's theatrical rather than authentic, but I think it works - I'm pretty sure it's designed to poke a little bit of fun at itself. And I can imagine it's a memorable experience to glug a tankard or two, cosily squeezed between your friends in a corner. We sat down where we could fit on a bench, shimmied off our soaking raincoats and muscled in between two guys who'd clearly been there a while (indicated by the empties around them) and a few girls who were surrounded by shopping bags. Being underneath the Sports Bar, I imagined it being a little male-orientated so it was nice to see some post-shopping ladies grabbing a beverage next to us! However, then I laid eyes on the waiting staff. All the men were dressed smartly in black shirts and black trousers and they were all a wide range of ages. All the female waiting staff, however, were basically teenage girls trundling around in poor-quality skimpy leaves-nothing-to-the-imagination leiderhosen. Talk about your double standards! And I know it probably sounds prudish - buxom barmaids are quite the stereotype and I appreciate it can be seen as "part of the experience", but it was just plain tacky. Really tacky. More than anything, not a single waitress could muster a smile the entire time we were there. They just mooched about by one corner of the bar looking fed up and miserable. ...which then leads on to the terrible service! We couldn't actually get anyone's attention to come up and serve us for a start. We tried to make eye contact, we waved, we shouted when the waitresses passed us, but each time they had their eyes down and strode right past us. Eventually we did manage to order drinks and food and we found that being able to pay for a round of drinks at the table is a really nice touch. And the menu itself was exactly what you'd expect, bursting with bratwurst and schnitzels and pretzels. However, the food really wasn't anything special. I had fries and a frankfurter and they arrived lukewarm and pretty average. For average pub food prices, I knew it wasn't going to be gourmet, but I expected more for my money. The place was only half full and it was late afternoon, so it wasn't like they were struggling to get orders out to a busy restaurant. Overall, I would never go back there. It's tacky, the beer is overpriced, the service is appalling and there are too many wonderful bars/pubs/more-appealing rainy street corners in Leeds to bother going back to the Leeds Bierkeller.

It is a bar / restaurant / night club on the waterfront of the river that unfortunately, like so many other bars and clubs, is a cattle market parading around falsely as a sophisticated night out. On a busy night, it is like drowning in a pond of glow stick fluid while bright orange practically naked women pout at you like delirious tropical fish from all angles (see photo of 'sexy santas'). Meanwhile the lazily produced monotonous drones of music repeatedly flick you in the face like an annoying little brother, provoking a tiresome and frustrating headache. Oblivious to any of this, it oozes with pretense, and goes about it's not-even-tactful patriarchal ways as grinning goofy men swagger around trying to look cool and control what's hopefully hidden in their trousers. The only valid reason for going here would be for comedy value, if you can stomach it.

The menu however has now changed! And I'm not happy. The speciality here used the be their almighty burgers and the selection was fab,it has been cut down now to a very minimal selection on the menu. :-( My friend and I went for lunch last week and I was surprised to see 2/3 tables of people in there- all eating. As it's down Brewery Wharf it's pretty tucked away so some days I have been in and no other customers have been in the place. This makes the bar space a cavernous and very cold place. The bar is nice and airy, very light with the floor to ceiling windows and features lots of 'bling' style decor touches. Anyway, back to lunch. We were greeted cheerily and seated wherever we wanted. She explained the 'burger lunch special' only featured skinny fries and not wedges or sweet potatoes as says on the usual menu. Other than that its a very good deal. We ordered and sat back to people watch. There seems to be more staff here than is necessary and no-one doing too much. The manager was doing paperwork in one of the booths and another male member of staff seemed to be doing very little except stomping around flexing his muscles. May suit the evening ambiance of this place but not at lunchtime love- I'm waiting to eat! The food came quite quickly and as we had sat opposite the kitchen hatch we saw it was all freshly prepared. We'd ordered the BBQ Ranch burger, the chicken bacon & avocado burger and some cheesy garlic bread. The garlic bread was lovely- very soft ciabatta and cheesy cheese- not overly garlicky so very nice. The burgers were well presented and the portion of fries were HUGE! My chicken burger was minced chicken- a strange consistency really and the guacamole didn't really do much for it. Overall it was OK but I left about a third of it. The ranch burger was nicer, large fresh onion rings and a sweet BBQ sauce provided with it were a great addition. The fries were nice and crisp and overall it was a pleasant lunch. A couple of things let this place down- The dodgy background music The excess of staff doing little to nothing The coldness in the place I wouldn't say I'd now rave about the burgers there but it's going to be one of them places to keep in the back of my mind if I want a filling burger lunch.
