Yes, HiFi -it's one of my favourite places to bust out my best grooves. (I'm not suggesting they're good, but I'm sure they're a spectacle.) I'd not been back for some time, so when the opportunity arose this weekend, I couldn't turn it down. As I was arriving, some of my friends had left, and in some respects I can see why. It was absolutely heaving, and of course the music was incredibly loud, as standard. It's difficult, as I was certainly getting the rage whilst trying to make my way to the toilets, or the bar -it's one thing for a venue to be heaving (this is fine, and can elevate the fun), but it's entirely another when you're battered and shoved beyond belief. Perhaps it was because it was so late, and so folk were drunk, but there were rather a lot of pushy people and manners had almost entirely left the building. It costs nothing to say 'excuse me'! Anyway, rant over. That being said, once I managed to wade to the bar, things got a lot better. The chap who served me was lovely and friendly, and beer in hand, I managed to find a spot with my comrades where we could dance with abandon. Top tip - the steps by the stage seemed to be the most spacious throughout the evening! And that brings me to the music. It's always utterly fantastic - for all the funk, soul and reggae that you could want, this is the place to come. I've not danced for a solid few hours in quite a while, and can absolutely say that it was fantastic, and in spite of the crowds I'm hoping to come back again soon. Drinks wise, I didn't really check out all the options, but there's a fairly decent range to suit most tastes. Price wise it was £4 in at about 1am, perhaps more earlier on, and the drinks are standard -expect to pay about £3+ per drink. I agree with Ben, the door staff are quite the jobsworths, though this keeps out the riff raff, for which I'm grateful! (And, they are friendly, don't get me wrong.) The toilets were in a bit of a poor state, but having been in much worse, it's not all that bad. Essentially, the biggest draw is of course the fantastic DJs, live music and comedy at their other regular events, friendly staff and having a right old dance. Highly recommended for a proper night of fun. Just be patient with the crowds!

Glydegate, Bradford…read more BD5 0BQ 01274 747494 This nightclub is up in the 'west end' of bradford which is the clubbing part of the city. Its quite a good night out but can get overrun with young teenyboppers which dont make a good atmosphere sometimes. The club itself is very nicely decorated inside and it is huge. The club is split into different themed sections which give it a feel of being different clubs. Monday and Tuesday are the quiet nights but the other nights all have a theme to them - like the students night 'show us ya monkey' on a wednesday which is great fun. Fridays is usually 2 for 1 night which gets very busy as you can imagine. It is free to get in before 11 - after that i think it is £2 but i could be wrong as am usually drunk by that time and can never remember. The club is lovely inside and the toilets are unique and huge and are always kept nice and clean and tidy. The staff are usually lovely but there are one or two bouncers who are quite miserable and be prepared to be asked for i.d as they do that a lot. The music is usually up to date dance, charts, etc, but they do different theme events now and then like 'the ministry of sound' night which gets very busy.

Dance off saw a battle between three major DJs, strangerways, good vibrations and juicy DJs playing a mix of Joy Division, The Temptations and Dr Dre. Amazing combination. Ruby Lounge is renown for it's quality club nights and live music. The venue is perfect, with an adequate dance floor, a stage to match and plenty of seating on a slightly raised level for a chill out. Another great Northern Quarter location that needs to become a regular thing for me.

The gig was billed as The Cribs Aftershow but it was basically just a gig- most of the spectators were either in one of the four bands, looked like they should be or were girl groupies who were way too impressed with themselves that they were getting backstage. The sofas and high backed armchairs in the main bar area were nice touches, there were a few mirror balls around too. Plus velvet curtains - hello, strip club? Then you turn to the grimy stage area with the big grill up between the bands and the crowd. That said, no one went past the pillar anyway. Too cool to stand right at the front. Alright drinks prices - get some of their cheap vodka mixers or flavoured sambucas otherwise you'll run out of money quickly. After the bands they had Gareth Brooks from Xfm DJIng but we didn't end up staying.

Dance to current indie/ britpop/ madchester and that is where 42nd Street is in it's element. You are usually a student or at least still dress like one. And you will appreciate the cheap student entry and cheap drinks. The comparisons to 5th Avenue are endless: personally I prefer 42s. Ok, its not big enough to run around and lose people and end up drinking on your own, say. But it does capture that New York dingy charm more. Either get sweaty and shout out the lyrics to The Smiths, Oasis and The Killers in the middle or join the handful of posers lounging on the one couch by the entrance. They are launching a request driven night on Mondays now 'PMT' which stands for Play My Tune - weird choice for the name but we'll forgive them. Other than that, you have 'Glamourous Indie Rock n Roll' on Fridays and their 'The Best Indie Night ever ...' on Tuesdays. And, be warned the bouncers do NOT take kindly to bare feet. A friend paid to put her high heels in the cloakroom once and then was immediately told she would be kicked out if she didn't put shoes back on. Fair enough but she didn't get a refund...

You'll often find a queue outside Mint Lounge on the weekends, revellers eagerly anticipating a night of soul, funk, jazz and electric disco. There's a couple of bar rooms and a main dance floor which gives off an underground vibe. They also have live bands playing here and the entry prices are reasonable - from £4-7 depending on the night and how early you arrive. Although I have to agree with James that 'Nish Nash Nosh' was a tragic loss, I do love Funkademia equally.

Expect a mix of the glamorous, fun loving, music loving cool kids in this place. Those who I seem to be able to always knock back a bit of random conversation with. The two club nights are Clique on a Friday and Funkademia on a Saturday both come recommended. Clique has been described as "Manchester's 21st Century disotheque playing alternative dance, electropop and digital disco" and has been voted Manchester's best club night many a times by the MEN. Funkademia, as you can probably guess, is more about the soul, funk and grooves. Mint Lounge has been accredited by Mix Mag as one of the COUNTRY's top ten clubs (2007). Not even just in Manchester. I'm not sure about that, for purely the bathroom situation. I'm just not a fan of checking out my shine in front of the bloke I had my eye on, or coming out of a loo along with a trail of toilet paper to find a mass of men and women trying not to smirk at me. It's bad enough in the girl's only toilets. I quickly get over this slight glitch and frequent the place more often than any other of Manchester's offerings I must admit. Watch out for special nights and guest djs, Hot Chip recently made an appearance, was tres bon to say the least.

A bar come diner come pool hall in a prime NQ spot must be a winner. The decor is fresh and suitably trendy. I visited on a busy Saturday night but it was perhaps too busy to get a feel for the place. I'd like to go back early evening and have a bite to eat. The food is being overseen by Anthony Fielden of Northern Quarter Restaurant so that gives me hope. I was a little miffed that although they advertise cocktails the guy behind the bar looked at me like I had just asked for a bowl of milk. No cocktails on offer but the other drinks were reasonably priced for that area. I was in there on a reconnaissance mission, and would have been interested to check it out anyway, but felt a lot of the clientele were in there because they thought they'd be classed as the 'cool set'. That just means everyone is watching everyone else and forgets to actually have fun. Luckily my friends and I snared a table and set about doing just that. I felt the music was poor for a Saturday night. I was expecting far better, especially as it's open until 5am. There are loads of good DJ's around who could offer something far more original. It was a bit like listening to a CD that is advertised in the ad breaks between Holyoaks. My friends and I left before I was tempted to 'hang the DJ' and found solace elsewhere. It certainly isn't the jewel in NQ's crown but it's the new kid on the block so perhaps once it has found its feet it'll find a voice I want to listen to on a Saturday night.

Unless you like the idea of grinding every Tom, Dick and stinking Harry on your way to the bar. Unless you like waiting half an hour for a drink, which you're most likely to spill given everyone around you thinks they're MJ reincarnated. It probably isn't your kettle of sardine. However Blackdog is brilliant if you want a game of pool and unwind during the week. It's brilliant for a weeknight in January with chilled vibes as I discovered few days ago. But on a busy night it's better to avoid it.
