The water quality in the lake is not suited for swimming as the lake still receives spillover from three outlets from the public sewer system. Early mornings are for the running people (and the walk of shame people) then comes the fashionable girls walking with a latte, the dog people, the late runners and finally the sunset chasers. Copenhagen's waterfront is facing east, so one of the best places to see the sun set behind the rooftop is here. My favorite is to share a bottle of wine (yes, this is legal here) by the stairs next to the Planetary. From here you can enjoy the last sun and wonderful atmosphere.

It's hard to miss the lakes, but whenever I'm in Copenhagen, I want to pay them a proper visit too. This time I was staying in an AirBnB very close to the lakes - in Østerbro, and gladly walked all the way pass the lakes to Vesterbro a snowy Friday morning. There weren't many people, but it was the best tour to start my trip with. This is the perfect place for a nature-ish walk (without even leaving the city center!), for a run, for walking the dog, for just sitting and chatting and having picnics when the weather is nice. It simply really is a pretty place! Walking from Østerbro to Vesterbro, along one side of the lakes, takes about 40-45 minutes.

In this part of the lake you can iceskate, if Winter is coming. Most Thursday afternoons children learn to sail in the west part of the lake. They are sailing in Optimist dinghies. Most people walk or run around the lake. You can also sit on the bank with a cup of what ever. This place is most beautiful during dawn or sunset. You can catch the most beautiful colors in the sky.

I used to run around these lakes while I was living in Copenhagen and I loved it. The paths around the lakes are good and easy to run on, flat and not to hilly so it is great for beginners to run on. It is even a very romantic place to take a stroll around when the sun is setting and the sky is turning red. They are not great to bathe in though as not only is the water dirty and filled with bikes and what ever else is in the city and the lakes are to shallow to be swum in. But even if you can not bathe in the lake it is still worth having in the city as it gives a sense of space and nature even in the middle of the biggest city of Denmark.

It's really a great way to take in the culture of the city that you're visiting while also familiarizing yourself with the area. We booked the "Grand Tour of Copenhagen" ahead of time to ensure a tour in English for that day. The tour can also be joined last minute depending on availability. The biggest draw is that the actual tour is free. You're just paying the gratuity to your guide at the end of it all. We met our guide at the steps of City Hall. Just look for the guides with bright green umbrellas. I say this because there are other free walking tours that meet up at similar locations within the square. Wayne checked us in and suggested that we take a look around inside City Hall before the start of the tour. It was a great suggestion as we probably wouldn't have seen it otherwise. It was a great introduction! Wayne was very informative throughout the tour. He pointed out things that we wouldn't have noticed right away. We learned about the culture, government, history, and even the language. He taught us all a few basic Danish words to help us with greeting people. He was great! It's a nice short tour that takes up only about 2.5 to 3 hours of your time. The pacing of the walk is perfect. There are cobblestone streets and bike lanes to navigate through, but otherwise it's an easy walk. Our tour ended at Amalienborg Palace. The only thing that would make the tour better is the timing of it. An early morning tour that ends right before the changing of the guard ceremony would be ideal. However, this might not be possible due to the time given after the tour for those with last minute questions or needing recommendations. That's totally understandable. Otherwise, it was time very well spent. Highly recommended!
