Science!

There's only one thing I love more then a novelty food idea. And that's a novelty food idea done to perfection! N2 is ice cream made in a way that would make Heston Blumenthal proud. The flavours are sometimes weird but always wonderful and nothing can top those syringes of caramel or chocolate!! Going into the store is often a little traumatic, only because it's so dam popular and hence nearly always busy! But getting to watch those little scientist mix up your favourite flavours with liquid nitrogen is well worth the wait. Plus the place smells so good. The worst thing about N2 is having to choose a flavour! They all sound so good and chances are you won't see the same stuff there for a while. Worth following them on FB just to be sure you don't miss the real goodies ;)

I love it! I love it! I love it! Ok I'm abit of a ice cream fan. But this place goes above expectations every time. New and exciting flavours every week. Went the other day and indulged in a choc Ferraro and rice bubble heaven! First ifs liquid substance brought out from blenders, placed into a processor and poured over n2 liquid nitrogen! Then once frozen, topped with rice bubbles and dipped in chocolate. Then a syringe filled with chocolate to add as you enjoy. A M A Z I N G

This place is great... I'd explain the science but every other reviewer has decided to talk about it so I'll be bread... The quicker you cool something down the less time it has to create crystals and thus forms microscopic crystals which when placed in your mouth feel like silk! Look it up or do the test yourself! Not only is smooth and creamy with or with out milk... They have fun with extravagant flavour combinations and presentation... From the simple scoop with a topping to a setting filled with caramel or fruit coolis! Don't miss out! Ps they have vegan options which makes me very happy seeing as I'm lactose intolerant!

N2 use liquid nitrogen in the ice cream making process. Liquid nitrogen is *extremely* cold (Wikipedia specifies a boiling point of -196ºC); using it to freeze ice cream results in the formation of very small ice crystals. What this translates to when you eat it is very smooth ice cream. I highly recommend trying N2 if you've never had liquid nitrogen ice cream before. Even if you have, I would still highly recommend N2. Be warned that the price is a little higher than traditional ice cream stores, but they do provide a good amount of ice cream in each serving.

I am all about culinary experimentation, so when I heard of a gelato shop opening in Melb that uses the power of science to whip up their sweetness on the spot, I got there as quickly as I could. I've been to N2 twice now, and both times have been overwhelmed by their flavors and product. N2 has been in Sydney for quite a while, but opened in Melb very recently. The entire place is a cheeky experience, with a novel array of gelati flavors that changes week to week on a chalkboard tree wall. The other walls are covered in fun facts about liquid nitrogen and all things deliciousness. The shop has been packed every time I've seen it, but if you pass the mobs watching the mad scientists at work, in the back of the shop there are covered pallets for seating. At $6 a cup for this nerdy novelty, it's no wonder why it's so popular. Biggest con? Because each serving is made individually, you'll never get your gelato the same time as anyone else you're with. Both times I've gone, someone in my group has received and finished their order before the rest of the group was served.

329 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy.

The Fitzroy area was a wonderful hubub of bars and excitement - we drove by line after line of bright lights and conversations before stopping by the curb outside N2 on Brunswick Street. The menu is playful and appropriately chalked up for all to see. The set up out front is spacious and minimalistic; there's a crowd already, ranging from the adolescent groups waiting out their orders on astroturf and the strays who preferred to line up against the wall and watch the liquid nitrogen at work. 1 scoop - which is apparently all you need is $6. Opting for a salted caramel was second nature for me but I was disappointed with what I saw - where were the iconic drippers and syringes that had allured every social media savvy ice cream lover since N2's conception? When they say "lava", one would expect there to be a lava looking garnish of some sort - instead, all we got was a fleck of black salt. The salted caramel was sharp and subtly sweet, but most importantly I was impressed with the smooth texture that I was hoping for from a liquid nitrogen ice cream. If only we had a cool flavour enhancing element to play with! Based on my first experience, I have to admit that I was a little let down - but I can't wait to try more, especially their Pandan Creme Brûlée. I love the idea of "dessert only" venues, it's something that I think Perth lacks and something that I hope will appear more in future.

The cheesecake one was fabulous! It was so good i had to share it with 2 other friends. It didn't last long :p

Never before have I tasted an ice cream like this! Like explained before it is ice cream that is made in front of your eyes in a funny science way. Its taste is creamy and delicious. I had the cheesecake one. They definitely should have this in Europe . I would be a regular customer :)

Liquid nitrogen working its "make gelato" magic.

Spring has almost sprung in Melbourne city! Now, you could take time to stop and smell the roses...or, just hear me out, you could ditch the roses and take time to stop and smell the ingredients at N2 Extreme Gelato. Chocolate syringe infused gelato no less! N2 Extreme Gelato has been on my Melbourne hit list for quite some time, and today, with almost mafia precision, the hit happened (they made me an offer I couldn't refuse!). I had heard there were vegan gelato options at N2, and must admit I was expecting the line up to include the usual sorbet suspects, so imagine my delight at discovering an option cleverly called "Sin-Almond" that had the 'Vegan' stamp of approval. Sin-Almond is a product of the process at N2 that sees liquid nitrogen used to turn cinnamon and almond milk into deliciously smooth and creamy gelato. Throw in some slivered almonds, top with a dusting of cocoa and a warm vegan chocolate ganache filled syringe, and viola, delicious, creamy, almondy, cocolatey goodness! There were other interesting combinations in store, and I am REALLY hoping to get back to N2 with an adventurous gelato partner who might be willing to sample the option that included a sprinkling of corn on top before the next menu change. Weird Science is the order of the day in N2, and I am happy to say, the science is good! The queue of people waiting to place an order, and the enraptured line of people watching the liquid nitrogen cloud spill from the mixers onto the floor like some fabulous 80s dance club are testament to that fact. Once you have your gelato firmly in hand, chill out N2 style (pun intended) on the astro turf seats, and bon appétit!

Cool place!

Innovative flavor creations! Watching them make each individual gelato is so much fun. Delightful treat! I wanted to try all the flavors.

Checked up the location and it was only 5 blocks away from where i was staying in Melbourne so it was a definite sign that i needed to go here :D!! Found out it's Shane Delia's invention, he's a perfectionist when it comes to food, have heard plenty great things about his Restaurant Maha & have some friends who have gotten a call from him asking how the service and food was :D. Went there on a friday night, was pleasant busy but that's Melbourne for you, never really crazy busy like Sydney which you get bored off now and then :D!! My cousin ordered the Juicy which was Beef kebab & a Brooklyn lager :),  i went for the Dirty South which was fried Chicken kebab & got the Brooklyn shake :D.. bourbon, cherry, white chocolate!! Both Kebabs had the perfect insides with the meat check out the menu for details & they were wrapped in fluffy pita bread it was LOVE at first bite and then heart break at last bite but my hunger was satisfied :D!! Brooklyn lager was definitely a different tasting beer and as for the Brooklyn shake i ordered another one ;D!! I could sit down for hours, eating & drinking :)... just being mellow with the Biggie vibes :D!! Can't wait to come back.. cousin stayed in Melbourne, so got to listen to him each week about what I'm missing out on lol!!

As this is a busy place we had various people both sides of us throughout our brunch. They now know more about my life than I'd prefer. The dishes my companion and I had were mighty impressive. For a start, both dishes were visually stunning (see photos), impressively composed and very flavoursome. Mine was the Huevos Sucios or the Dirty Eggs. I cannot fault the dish particularly as the jalapeño flavour was so beautifully balanced that it gave a delightful length to the meal that lasted well after I finished it. It was never over hot either. The temperature was bang on. Plus, I thought it was good value for money. The Dirty Mary for $10 with this dish is a steal and it's a superb drink. This is better than any version of Mary I tried recently in Hawaii where they'd claim to make the drink better. They don't. My dining companion had the king salmon which he declared as delicious too. Our coffees to finish were lovely as well and topped off a pleasant and successful venture. I'd like to give the place a 4.5, but that option isn't available as has been canvassed here at length. On balance, mainly due to the squeezy tables for two, I'd round down to 4 this time not up to 5. Tough judgements these.

I was wondering why such a popular spot would be so isolated? But all is well worth the effort to get here. The venue is brimming with natural lighting, classic charm and warmth. For my breakfast, I ordered the Pixelated avocado (on a sourdough toast) because it just looked so darn intriguing. I didn't expect anything else to be honest, and turned out this was GOOD!! Every single element in this dish has complex flavors that compliments each other. The chili dried air kale, diced pixelated avocado and the soft shell crab was especially stunning. The dish certainly performs to its Instagram ability. For my drink, I ordered their matcha latte; it was strong tasting yet smooth. I could drink this all day! The Light Years is certainly not disappointing in any way, from the beautiful venue to the outstanding food, supported with service and ambiance for days. Recently opened at the bottom of a new apartment block just along from the Camberwell tram depot, it should not be confused with Lights in the Attic cafe which is a bit further down Camberwell Road. The fit out is the now common scandi/minimalist affair with a smattering of potted greenery. Coffee is from Dukes, but the star of the show here is the food. All the dishes I saw coming out looked great and were good sized portions. I had the bircher and it was a generous serve, looked pretty and tasted even better. Overall a good value and tasty option for brunch/lunch in the leafy inner east.
