Lemme tell you a story... so there I was, drenched to the bone and covered in mud, sweat, and…read moreprobably a few tears after an 18 mile jaunt through an overly muddy 100-Mile Wilderness. My hiking buddy Sriracha and I had managed to lose the blazes in the middle of our hike and wound up in a bog, nearly fell from a man-made foot bridge, and possibly inhaled a bit too much DEET 100. I'd been reading up on various spots to stop and resupply in the wilderness for quite some time - White House Landing always popped up on the list, so we planned on making that the daily terminus of our trek. After spotting the "signs" and picking up the very well blazed trail, we wove through the forest as the sun began to set. The darkness and shadows surrounded us as we reached a lonely pier on an even more lonely lake. Attached to a nearby tree was an air-horn - with a sound akin to the trumpeting of 10,000 high school bands, the resonating blast emitted from the horn echoed across the still cold waters. We stood on the end of the pier and we waited. A few minutes passed and we heard the far off distant cry of a boat motor. There it was - salvation upon the mirrored lake, coming to carry us home... or at least to the camp! We were greeted by pizza. Not just any pizza, but massive pizza. It was like heaven in the middle of Maine - which is like heaven on Earth... so maybe it's like heaven's heaven? Perhaps that's too philosophical. Either way, the food was great and expectantly pricey (you're in the middle of nowhere kids...). The camp offered a variety of accommodations, from a massive bunkhouse (complete with fireplace) to small lake-side cabins. I explored them all and can attest that they were all very clean, well stocked with all you'd expect in a wilderness camp, and quite comfortable with fresh-linens and the ever-so-coveted plush camp towels. The shower room was large and had enough stalls to prevent hiker traffic-jams: as a side-note, be sure to head the warning to limit your shower-time. The water is drawn up from the lake (by hand when I visited) into a central cistern which takes a bit of time and effort - so be respectful with your showers. Aside from the basic amenities, the camp offers a great little store beside their kitchen/dining area for resupply. I say great because sometimes even a can of Vienna Sausages and a new toothbrush can make your day! Let me finalize by giving the reason for four instead of five stars. My experience here was great - most likely a 4.5 (which I normally round up). However, there have been a string of negative posts and self-relayed stories to me about how the service was bad, attitudes were bad, food was bad, etc. While I am not one to base my reviews on other's opinions, I feel that it is important to relay the long-standing feelings of other hikers and thus weight them within my review. The hosts did seem a bit impatient with getting us out of the camp in the morning but otherwise were very gracious. The food was exceptional and in some hiker's opinions, the burgers are legendary. Overall, I can summarize my review with a question - what do you expect from a place that's buried deep within the 100-Mile Wilderness? The answer is this - a bed, a warm greeting, and some basic supplies. I received all of these things, and as such I was satisfied. Give it a shot if you're hiking thru!

This was my very first rafting. The paradox is that I was in this place 5 years ago, but I could…read morenot get on the boat because of the weather. Exactly 5 years later, I come here, to the same place, with almost the same group of friends, and the next 6-7 hours pass incredibly. I want to mention one person without whom this trip would not have been so incredible - Sean. I know that everyone says this about their guide, but they just didn't raft with Sean. Then they wouldn't say that. I will not tell you how the briefing went, how we rode the bus, etc. Nothing was interesting about it (but the instruction is essential and clear). After getting into the boat and learning all the commands (it took about 5 minutes), we were immediately thrown onto the rapids of the 5th level. These were unforgettable emotions at the very beginning of our trip. I think this is what sparked us, and we wanted more "fire and flame." In general, we sailed the first part without losses. Then there was lunch. Very tasty! The steak and rice were free! The second part was more relaxed, except for a few thresholds. On one of them, we were thrown so hard that two people and a GUIDE!!!! flew out of the boat. The rescue mission was quite successful, and in a minute, everyone was already in the boat. In general, emotions overwhelm me so much that I was ready to repeat everything immediately the next day. Unfortunately, we had to drive back to Boston. But I promise we will come back to you next year. Sean, get ready. Next time we definitely need to turn the boat over. I was only annoyed because I lost one of my Rainbows and subsequently walked around sans one shoe the rest of the day. Sigh. I liked his style of teaching, which was more of a "Let's try it and learn along the way" rather than "Practice this, practice that." In the shadow of Mt. Katahdin, we drifted down the Penobscot River on nothing more than a giant balloon. The trip started off with class 2 and 3 rapids on the lower portion of the Penobscot River. It was complete with a stop by a huge natural water slide and more rapids before lunch. There's a couple hours of drifting and really taking in the beauty of wild Maine (which was a welcome and green relief from concrete NYC), so if you know all of your raft-mates, it's slightly more pleasant. We played games and riddles for a large portion of the drifting time. Poor James got stuck with playing our games too. A BBQ lunch is provided by Penobscot Adventures and it included all-you-can-eat steak or chicken or veggie burgers, pasta salad, an AMAZING rice dish that I would gladly consume again, bread rolls, cookies, sugary lemonade, and of course, water. After lunch, we piled back onto the buses for the best part of the whitewater rafting trip - the class 5 rapids. With names like Turkey Shooter, the Exterminator, and the Cribworks, can you really go wrong? The class 5 rapids were infinitely more fun than class 3 and 4. From now on, it's 5 all the way, baby! I wonder if I can convince my friends to make this an annual trip....

For my 500th - I'd like to dedicate my review to my TRW family!…read more If you know me, you'd know that I've fallen in love with whitewater rafting, but not only that, but I also fell in love with Three Rivers' Penobscot Outpost in Millinocket! I'll review the rivers individually later. But for now, I'm going to focus on the facility here. If you've been to the Forks location, you'll find that this facility is a little different in that instead of an open field for camping, there are individual camp sites. Most of the sites you'll have an out-house instead of a bathing house that you can go to. Be sure to bring your own TP! If not, you'll have to continually walk back to the main bathroom with actual plumbing in their main building. OR if you're like me, I just use the wilderness that we have available, it's called the woods/trees! Each site has a fire ring along with a picnic table. And if you can afford it, they also have yurts, bunk houses, and platform cabin tents available. Yurts have plumbing in that you get a shower and a flushing toilet. I also believe the bunk houses have this option as well. I absolutely love this facility for some reason. Might be the atmosphere. Might be the fact that I'm in love with the P'nob. Might be the fact that the staff here are AMAZING folks! They are seriously the most accommodating people I've ever met. We had a group of 4 that came up for the first time. The second time, we had a group of 16. And let me tell you, getting 16 people into a camp site is not easy, when your facility is already booked to capacity, but Tony and his crew did it! They gave us an amazingly huge site to fit all our tents and cars! Seriously, always a great time! And even better if you hit up a theme night. They have Formal Friday Karaoke nights, Saturday Skirt Nights, and I believe Tuesday Taco, Wednesday Wing (?) nights. The bathrooms are immaculately clean, I know they clean it at least 3 times a day, I know this because I've seen this! The only thing I would have them change if they could, is probably put up a privacy wall between the stalls and the showers. If that door swings open, pretty much anyone that walks by can see you change after you get out of the shower. Other than that, I have to say I seriously like that their retail store is literally adjacent to the bar/restaurant, and that you have to enter through there in order to get to the restrooms and bar/restaurant. It kind of just brings all of it together. The best part of the Three Rivers experience though are the guides. The guides are what makes TRW the best company to raft with. I've been rafting with TRW for about 4 years now and have never been disappointed. If you get a chance, request for Cody or Rhino to guide you down the river. They have the most experience with the river and will give you the ride of your life! Additionally, for all you rafters, one quick tidbit if you thought you'd be getting your lunch/dinner after your trip like you normally would in the Forks, think again if you were planning on packing a snack/lunch! You actually pull over half way through the river trip to where the campsite is where the overnights stay, and the staff makes you your lunch along the river, which includes your choice of steak, haddock, chicken, burger or veggie burger, with rice pilaf, coleslaw, 4 bean salad, and a homemade chocolate chip cookie, served with lemonade and/or iced tea. Just be careful of eating too much because you will be rafting a few more hours to complete the rest of the river! And well you also need to be able to fit back into your life jacket! Trust me, I've been there and had to readjust my PFD! And don't forget, HAVE FUN!!! The P'nob is my favorite river by far! I heart it so much, I am doing it 3 times this year alone! And it made me think about becoming a river guide next season!

I find it a bit silly that a state park in rural Maine built around a 5,000+ peak would model its park rules after Denali National Park, centered around the tallest mountain in North America. I think rules this restrictive only serve to make our parks less accessible to people who aren't affluent white liberals but...enough of my soapboxing. We came here to climb Mt Katahdin. And, for once in my life, when I say "climb", I actually mean it! We did a technical rock climbing route on the peak called "The Armadillo": https://www.mountainproject.com/route/106020335/the-armadillo We stayed at a luxurious lean-to at Chimney Pond. The rangers there were very helpful and friendly. They made the drudgery of the various oppressive rules almost...fun? I highly recommend staying at Chimney Pond yourself, climber or not. The views here feel nothing like New England. They feel more like Alaska, north of the arctic circle. Katahdin is only a little over 5,000 feet but it has big granite walls of rock unlike an other mountain in New England. (yes, including Mt Washington) My only complaint is that I got an insane amount of insect/arachnid bites on this trip. If you're staying in a lean-to, it might be helpful to have some sort of bug net! so many rules, so magical
