I have never felt more relaxed and I now know what it's like to think of 'absolutely nothing'. Tomhegan Lodge gave me that wonderful experience.
Depending upon where you start from, the ride can take a while, but once you've travelled into the heart of Maine and driven on a well-maintained county dirt road and the four mileTomhegan road, you feel like the world you knew has been left behind. That ride is actually an important transition because when you arrive at Tomhegan, you'll know it's a very special refuge...both for you and for the deer and other animals that share the peaceful space with you.
My family from Maine and our friends from Brooklyn and Maine shared this spacious Lodge for an entire week. We each had our own bedroon and private bath with many of the amenities of life: clean comfortable rooms with a small balcony, a HUGE kitchen, immense living area with a wood stove, soft couches and unique rustic chairs, an outdoor grill, and a firepit by the lake. What it didn't have was TV and wi-fi. If those last two are important, you don't want Tomhegan Lodge. But if you want a quiet, relaxing, peaceful experience that connects you with nature, this is the place. It's also a chance to fish and swim in Moosehead lake (ice fish and snowmobile in the winter)
Oh, bring lots of extra carrots and celery...and some nuts. That's because the deer, ducks, and chipmunks will stroll by the lodge throughout the day. Since the deer live on the adjacent game preserve and are fed twice daily by the Tomhegan camp managers across the driveway, they feel very safe. A few will be willing to come right up to you and feed from your hand. I have a video of my wife on the porch, sitting on a rocking chair, feeding a stalk of celery to a deer who came right up to her. I also have one of my son-in-law sitting with a carrot in his mouth as a deer ate it.
If you're skiddish of animals, don't worry. They'll only come up to you if you offer them food. But you can sit on the porch with a book or some quiet conversation and watch the wildlife walk by only a few yards away. I really exjoyed Mama with her recently-born fawns relax on the grass nearby.
During the week I was privileged to have most unique and memorable experience Everyone else was doing something (Grandson and a friend fishing; son-in-law napping; others reading inside, granddaughter and friends playing foosball, etc.). I just happened to be the only one on the porch overlooking the lake that afternoon. It was like being in a life-size iMax theater observing nature in total peace and quiet, just in a totally relaxed state, totally thinking of 'nothing'. From the left corner of my eye I caught something dropping out of a tree. I turned and saw a duckling get up and run towards its mother. Then I saw a fur ball fall 60 feet from the lowest crotch on the tree. It bounced on the ground and got up to run to mom. This happened seven more times. They were wood ducks and the ducklings apprently are such a light mass of cartilege they don't get hurt falling like that.
The point of this is that I felt so privileged to be relaxing in this absolute quiet, overlooking the lawn leading to the lake AND witnessing this special moment in nature.
So if your family and/or friends want the true experience of nature with thr rustic comforts of home (minus tv & internet) Tomhegan Lodge is the way to go. Tho only caution is that when you leave, you'll feel a sadness that you'll probably have to wait till next year to come back. And trust me, the kids will love the swimming, fishing, foosball, games, bunk beds, etc....and all the deer..so much they'll ask on the way out, "Can we come here again next year?"
I know: "I'll be back". read more
