Salsa In the Suburbs - A great group after a dance workshop!

I love dancing! As I traveling nurse, I have experienced multiple schools across the country. The…read morequality of lessons I am receiving at Salsa in the Suburbs is second to none. Big dance schools like to hold you back & put everyone into a single curricular mold. I was always bored and wanting more. All the other staff members & students here are knowledgeable and welcoming as well. Socials and practice parties are an added bonus. I've always loved Salsa, but now my interest in Bachata has been piqued as well. Do yourself a favor and try Sensual Bachata! Julie is a particularly great coach! She is always pushing and challenging me. Even when I am not sure of my abilities, she strives to get more out of me. This personalization is what I've always wanted and that other schools are lacking. In addition to the dance instruction, Julie is a blast to work with and we laugh the entire lesson. I'm learning so much, getting in a great workout, and having a great time while doing it! I highly recommend Salsa in the Suburbs and all it has to offer for your dancing desires.

I'd been to classes at another venue before, and while I enjoyed those classes, I do appreciate the different levels they have at Salsa in the Suburbs. They structure the classes well so that you can put together a routine by the time you finish up a course. The instructors are very knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. We went to one of the later classes in the series, so we needed some clarification on a part of the routine that we had missed in prior classes. One of the instructors, Craig, was great about showing us what we had missed and helping us both get it right. He didn't just show us what we had asked about; he asked us to do the entire routine to make sure we understood it all, which was great. I'm looking forward to attending the rest of the classes in this series as well as the higher-level classes.

Sergei is the man!!!!!! We absolutely LOVED working with Sergei every week. It was so sad when our…read moretime was over and we didn't get to spend our weekly visits with him! I surprised my husband by getting a Groupon for Fred Astaire. I had been reading all of the brides saying how choreographing their first dance was one of the best decisions they made. I figured we could try out a lesson with the Groupon and decide if we wanted to fully commit or not. If worse came to worse, I figured we had fun taking a couple of lessons. Of course we loved our first appointment with Sergei and immediately booked our weekly sessions with him! We procrastinated a bit so we started about two months out from our wedding. When I called she kindly told me that we better get moving if we wanted to be ready for our wedding day. lol. We were looking to merge two songs together into one dance. We gave Sergei the time stamps of the songs and he arranged a beautiful dance for us with the perfect blend of both songs. We worked hard week after week and felt like contestants on dancing with the stars. Once Sergei suggested we video ourselves and watch it in between visits, it made a huge difference! It was very difficult remembering if we were doing the steps correctly just from our memory. We continued to add on new sections week after week until we finally put everything together. The week leading up to our wedding we did a practice run in front of everyone at the studio that night. It was very stressful with everyone watching us but fun. The whole idea is to get you used to people watching you perform the dance. I really wanted Sergei to be there on our wedding night like you would see your childhood dance instructor on the side of the stage at your dance recital. lol. He was there in spirit! My husband had a heart attack when he saw how ginormous my wedding gown was. He said, "how are we going to do this with this dress?!?!?!" I told him that I showed Sergei from the beginning and that we should be able to make it happen! lol I think we did Sergei proud! If it wasn't for COVID, we could have gone to show him our video by now! The studio itself is clean and spacious. There is TONS of parking. They have large open windows so you can see directly into the studio, which is fine. There are wall to wall mirrors where you are practicing. The bathrooms are clean. They have places for you to keep your things while you are dancing. You are practicing on the dance floor simultaneously with other dancers and their instructors. If you book the same time slot you are likely to see the same people week to week. That was our experience and we were able to meet new people that were all very kind and friendly. They even acknowledged both of our birthdays! They hug you hello and goodbye and it really feels like a family! We highly recommend Fred Astaire Dance Studio. They are all extremely professional and hard-working. Many of them (if not all of them) are still traveling for dance competitions themselves and have won many awards! They are excellent teachers! It's pretty easy to find a session that works with your schedule. They also work with you to pay for your lessons as you go versus having to pay one lump sum when you sign your contract. They put the music together for you and create a dance perfect for you and your dance partner. Sergei was kind, patient and professional as he worked with us to be the best dancers we could be. He is absolutely the best! Thank you so much, Sergei!

It's been about six months now since we started weekly lessons and we have a great foundation. We regularly social dance now. We're not Fred and Ginger but we get around well and are able to pick up more moves and dances much more easily. Thanks to the wonderful professional instruction and encouragement at FADS West Chester. Highly recommended!

disclosure: I vaguely know Scott the studio owner and am friends with one of the instructors and…read morethe studio manager. This is a smaller adult oriented studio that offers both group and private ballroom instruction for both social and competitive dancers (not so much standard though). I've seen group classes but not personally taken them and people look like they're having fun. They also do seasonal showcases for people interested in performing without the pressure of competition. The studio itself is L shaped with several walls of mirrors and is fine for latin and social dancing. It's not a great space if you need to practice full on ballroom routines on a normal sized competitive floor (this comment is geared mainly towards s/s dancers) because there isn't the square footage you might need. The studio instructors who I don't know already or am not taking lesson with usually ignore me- they're not unfriendly but they don't say hi either. Social dances are not crowded, and the last time I went there was a relatively high girl to guy ratio- but snacks and drinks were included, yay.

Dance Sport Academy is, hands down, the best dance instruction I have ever received. I have been…read moredancing swing for nearly ten years and ballroom for six years, I have taken lessons from national and international champions, I am a certified teacher in my own right, and let me say no one else has provided instruction of such high quality as I have received here. The instructors, in addition to being accomplished dancers themselves, have a phenomenal understanding of the teaching process and produce consistently outstanding results among their students. The past few months I have been at the Academy have produced some of the best growth I have ever experienced as a dancer. That said, there are three downsides. The first is that the lessons are the most expensive of any studio in Philadelphia (though they are well worth the price). Second, the group classes are often at inconvenient times and focus on a very narrow range of dances. Third, the parties are rarely attended by the school's better dancers and are seriously weighted towards inexperienced women, with very, very few unattached men in attendance. None of these downsides, however, has even remotely dissuaded me from taking lessons here, and I highly recommend you do the same.
