Great little Japanese toy shop in Logan Square. They have a bunch of models of monsters, manga characters and super heroes. They have Japanese candies and other little odd things. My kids love to go in and browse. The owners are friendly and don't mind you just looking around (we sure do it often enough). It's definitely a specialty shop, and probably doesn't appeal to everyone, but if this is your thing you will be really happy you stopped in. Lastly, I have no idea what this stuff is supposed to cost, but the prices seem reasonable. read more

Fun Japanese toy store! It was definitely on the smaller side being a local business but the owner was super friendly! I just wish there was a bigger selection! It definitely seems to have a focus on popular series so lots of Demon Slayer, Pokemon, Evangelion, etc with a good selection of Gundam customization tools. While I'm personally not super into anything like that it is still worth taking a look and seeing if you can find anything you like! read more

This is single-handedly the best you store in Chicago. The owners are two of the nicest people ever and they've made it a real treat to be a regular. I have been into Gunpla for not even a full year but they made the entire process of getting kits fun. At first I was skeptical from reading other reviews about this place, but the husband and I decided to check it out anyway. I'm glad we did, because we had a great time and no problems at all. The guy working was super friendly and engaged us in small talk as we browsed around. He even gave some suggestions, and showed us some new stuff he had gotten in. The prices were very reasonable from what I've experienced in other Japanese figurine shops. We used to shop at a figurine store in Akihabara when we used to live in Japan, and we ran into prices similar to this shop. I was blown away when I found out a store like this was in our neighborhood. Owners are so nice - I always feel comfortable and safe while shopping. Inventory is great and rotates frequently. Pre-orders are easy and online selection is IMPRESSIVE. Don't see something on the website? ASK! I've special ordered several items. Prices are fair and some times less than big box stores/sites. Much cheeper than ordering individual items directly from overseas company websites. ON TOP OF ALL THAT I love supporting small business. read more

While the selection is a little small, the incredible dynamic duo running this shop are a delight to talk to. Prices are extremely reasonable and I was able to buy some collectibles less than what they were going at retail. This is a great specialty toy shop. It has a bunch of monster toys, super heroes and manga characters. The owners are very friendly and accommodating. Kids will love this toy shop and some adult collectors too can enjoy this. The prices of toys seem reasonable. It might be good if it has a bigger space, but overall, it's having nice selection of toys. Demon Slayer and Pokemon are some of the toys from anime and cartoons. Gundam toys are also the modern version of robots. I will definitely recommend this to my friends and relatives with kids. This place is a really cute and well-curated shop with a great variety of imported Japanese toys including anime and video game statues, little mystery boxes, and other collectibles. I met the owner when I was in from out of town, and she was super friendly and answered all of my questions and also suggested similar stores to check out. It is small, but it's still a nice place to browse instead of sitting at home on eBay. The prices are fair (think $3 keychains - $150 for special edition larger items) considering how difficult it would be to find these in the States, and it feels good to support an excellent local business like Nakama, which you can tell is a labor of true love for the stock. They also have little Japanese snacks up front. Overall, loved this little place and would definitely stop in if I was in town again. read more

I used to come here all the time for tokusatsu (Kamen Rider and Super Sentai) collectibles but they unfortunately don't stock them anymore. Those were really the only reason I ever went to this store, as I am not much into anime or any of the other stuff they stock. To be fair however, although it's been a long time since I've been in the store (though I pass by all the time), I am reviewing it based on the experiences I did have there and how much I loved shopping there when they did have merchandise that interested me. The staff is very friendly and helpful. If it's in the store, they will know about it. The store is clean and there is a colorful assortment of collectibles, figures, and toys from various aspects of Japanese culture. Since they no longer stock tokusatsu collectibles, the most salient of these to me would probably be the section in the middle which holds various gacha collectibles such as Pokemon and miscellaneous video game ones, though I'm sure that collection rotates out regularly. This is probably the most affordable section of the shop; when I did purchase bigger collectibles from here prices were a little expensive, but when you think about the fact that it's being imported from Japan and you don't have to pay or wait for shipping, it's a damn good deal. This isn't Toys R Us or one of those anime shops you find at the mall. These are mid-range to high-end collectibles being sold so expect to fork over a decent chunk of change if you want something from here. As long as you go in with the expectation that things won't be cheap, and you know what to expect from whatever collectible you're searching for, the prices are completely reasonable given what you're getting. Literally, my only star deduction is for the fact that they don't stock tokusatsu anymore. I personally don't see myself coming back here in the future unless I have time to kill in the area; I really wish they would stock Kamen Rider and Super Sentai again! Other than that, fantastic store with fantastic staff, and a great addition to the Logan Square collectors' community. read more

I came to Chicago looking for anime merch and manga for my collection , I was directed to this place due to its high ranking on google and alas I was deceived. I walked into a barren shack with absolutely zero manga and a wide variety of hentai action figures that I find highly controversial, the two sleaze-bags working didn't even grant me a single ounce of acknowledgement and continued their worthless conversation about their miserable lives. A really great stop if you wanna get some neat Japanese collectibles! The center of the store is dedicated to blind boxes, capsule figures, keychains and the like, which are all really reasonably priced and fun to look at 'n buy if you're on a budget. Fancier figures line the walls, with prices ranging all across the budget spectrum. All the products are really high quality and I've enjoyed my purchases so far. The prices of items are pretty comparable to what you'd pay if you ordered online anyway, and sometimes cheaper when you factor in that you're not paying shipping. ... Also you don't have to wait for shipping, AND you get to see stuff in person, soooooooo ... it's a pretty easy choice to buy from here just for convenience alone, and the fact that they don't price gouge is all the better. The space is open and items are displayed in a way where it's really easy to look at everything. Nothing's placed so high or low that it's inconvenient, basically. And it's not crammed together in a way where you're at risk of knocking things over - nicely spaced out. They get new shipments of stuff regularly, so it's fun to check in and see what they've got. You can also do preorders and stuff on the website I guess? I've never dealt with the online side of the business but I assume it's good. Their website's well organized if nothing else. There's even a smallish selection of Japanese snacks and candy which are difficult to find elsewhere in the 'hood (stuff you won't see at Joong Boo, either) so that's a plus. ALSO the owners of the store are super friendly and knowledgable about their product. They foster a really cozy community-minded atmosphere in the shop where you can hang out and chat about toys and whatever with them and other customers. Love it. A great collection of japanese collectible from toys to model kits. Staff is friendly and store is very clean. My only wish was that the store was a little bigger and had more Godzilla collectibles. But I'm just being nitpicky. I often pick up the toys and boxes to look at and I was never yelled at for doing so. As a matter in fact, plenty of people come in here and pick up figures and boxes to look at. Anyone claiming that they were yelled for pucking up a figure is lying or they were doing crazy things to figure. I sometimes come in here with my children after picking them up from school. My 9 year old son broke out in conversation with an employee talking about the japanese snacks on the counter. The employees have always been nice to my kids. So it's not a huge place, but it's really organized, has a solid selection, and the two running the place were very very helpful! They seem to have a solid online store cause I walked in and they had a stack of boxes ready to ship! Lots of throwback stuff, models and figures that brought back memories from growing up (modern twist - masterpiece transformers, macross, gundam) Lots of anime and some yummy treats from out east! I'm constantly on the hunt for Japanese collectibles, so when I heard about Nakama Toys I was very excited. The customer service was great, incredibly nice lady, but sadly I wasn't very impressed with their selection. It was very slim pickings, although for the size of the store it makes sense. I was hoping for more Japan exclusive stuff or harder to find collectibles, but it was mostly items you could easily find online from sites like entertainment earth.
