Can I just say a huge thank you to Mother Clucker? These guys were my Sunday night Saviours on the…read moreweekend just gone... I should probably explain how a fast food joint saved the day. Sunday was the launch of XP at the Mockingbird Theatre. This is a geek themed event held once a night and is a bit of a mecca for all things board game, computer game, quiz and film orientated. Naturally we had to go. I am currently on a bootcamp scheme (see http://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/fit-body-bootcamp-birmingham for info), meaning I am on a strict diet of proteins, fats and No carbs. After consuming a smoothie for my breakfast and a salad for my lunch, I was starving hungry by 5pm. Everyone seemed to be either ordering pizza (a major no-no for me) or heading to Subway for their tea. I thought neither of these would be an option before a helpful person mentioned that Subway did salad bowls, problem solved... Or so I thought. Despite having all of the components of salad, Subway in Digbeth DON'T do salad bowls (and their staff are pretty unhelpful too). In a major grump, I left the store to see what else was on offer on the street. Right next door I came across Mother Clucker. Firstly, they scored a point for having a name that made me snigger, secondly... They couldn't have been more helpful if they tried. After a quick peruse of the menu I opted for lemon and herb chicken (which is served without skin). I asked if I could have some salad with this, after looking at me strangely for a minute - the guy said "Sure, we can do that. It'll be no extra charge". Winner. The chicken was cooked fresh for me as I waited and I requested some lettuce, onion and chillies (all I could have). I was even warned that the salad might be a bit rubbish as it's predominently meant for burgers, but I thought it was sweet that they warned me. My diet friendly feast was a budget busting £3.50. The guys that did end up going to Subway ended up pretty jealous of my dinner after all. This new kid on the block is sparkling clean, very friendly and super helpful. Will I be back? You can bet your bottom dollar I will.

This little place is even better because it's also called 'Chicken' so you know exactly what you're getting before you even walk in.....brilliant!! Most of the time I only buy my fried chicken from certain takeaway shops but when I visited this shop I was pleasantly surprised. It's not bad at all and they offer great value meals for those on a tight budget who can't afford to buy expensive lunches. They don't overdo the chicken coating as some places tend to overdo it and therefore the chicken ends up tasting horrible. Also, it's not as greasy as what I expected; which was a pleasant surprise as well. I paid about £2 for a chicken and chips meal and that totally filled me up for most of the day.

I requested some chicken, fries, ribs, a can of Fanta and a bottle of Coke. The chicken was horrible, it really was sodden with grease, the fries were soggy, the ribs were not made from pork at all (I dread to think what it was, I only ate one), it wasn't Fanta I received it was some cheap imitation called Mirinda and it wasn't Coke either it was Pepsi. It is safe to say NOTHING that I ordered was any good or correct. If you can't supply the exact item that someone has ordered you need to tell them, don't advertise Fanta if you mean Mirinda, i would not have ordered it. If you go to HMV to buy Despicable Me on DVD you don't expect to be given Shrek and told it's almost the same as they are both animated, do you? In bars and restaurants all places need to ask you if you are ok with Pepsi if you ask for Coke, for the full reason that it is not the same product. I don't really expect much when it comes to take away anyway but at the same time i don't think it takes much either to get simple things like an order right. I don't really expect much in the way of food quality either but there is food and then there is bin contents and quite frankly this was bin contents. Finally if you're going to call yourselves Chicken.com, why not obtain the web address that is Chicken.com? This only sums up how stupid the people who run this restaurant must be in the first place. AVOID!

Ideally situated near a school and 6th form college, there's a captive audience to make lunchtimes a real rush. Just in case you were in any doubts of its tuck-shop credentials, chocolate, crisps and pop are on sale for those who just can't face school dinners. Don't tell Jamie Oliver. I prefer to go on an evening when the customers become a little older. The Chicken Meat and Chips with lashings of salad and mayonnaise is particularly nice, and the handy trays means there's no washing up. At this time of night parking isn't too much of a problem, although it's restricted somewhat. There is a little car park round the back, although we prefer to pull up outside where there's a series of bays on the opposite side of the road. I don't fancy your chances of finding a space in the daytime though!

But that's the only complaint really - this is a large, traditional chip shop with a cracking menu and rave reviews. It also has the cutest single table and seat outside for anyone brave enough to open their wrapping in full gaze of passing motorists. I don't know what's the greatest praise I've heard for it: that a friend walks four miles there and back so Be My Chip's chips can be his chips, or that when seeking to extend its hours of operation, workers from the court, fire and police stations over the road wrote to the council offering letters of support. So what's the deal? Can't its batter be beaten? It's not so much that the food is spectacularly different or super-cheap, rather that it's rare these days to enter a chip shop of this size, slightly romantically stepping down from street level to go inside. Local businesses and students from the neighbouring college form a swathe of its customer base, which isn't too shabby given a main road location which doesn't encourage residential trade. Parking, then, becomes an issue outside of office hours as you'll likely be driving so that you can (was this the pun) be a guest. But you should be able to find a legitimate bay outside the police station and former court building on the opposite side of the street. It might be a scramble for that table though.

A typical High Street Peri-Peri Chicken place. I used to grab it for takeaway often during the pandemic as it was just around the corner from my home. I've never had issues with my order being messed up or anything like that. They only complaint I've ever had about this place is even though there is never more than a few people queued up, it can take some time before you get your order. I've come and ordered a chicken strip meal, and I waited almost ten minutes for it. But other than that, it's quick and easy - which I think is what you want when you come in here.

Special offers and deals are plastered all over the windows and behind the counter and there are a few chairs and there are tables inside for those who prefer not to take their food away. Unfortunately, the staff are a little haphazard and on two separate occasions now, I have visited Sam's Chicken for a quick snack and had my order messed up. Most recently, I ordered 2 tower chicken burgers for £4 and left the store only to find that the staff had forgotten the hash browns, causing me to have to return to the store and have my order corrected. The food here is tasty enough and very well priced, but I'd recommend eating elsewhere simply because the customer service here doesn't seem to be up to scratch.

Cooked perfectly. There were also some of the Asian style on the table. Which were equally as incredible. The fries, were topped with coleslaw, slightly spicy comeback sauce. Wonderfully done. The burgers got thumbs up all around. There was a buffalo and two hot head, I couldn't sing it's praises enough. My favourite chicken place to date, has been crackbird in Dublin. This has taken its crown. Bravo. (The beer was great)
