We had high expectations when my child joined GradePower. Reviews and parent recommendations were…read moreexcellent. Unfortunately, for us, the experience was not great. The first few weeks, my child was provided a workbook that was two grades below him on accident. After they discovered this mistake, they quickly moved him to the correct book. However, GradePower did not notify me of this nor did they attempt to make amends for this error. My child never came home with any workbook or items to review once he left their facility. After several months, I asked that GradePower focus on more of the items that my child struggled with versus the items he was already good at. Alex, the owner, agreed, but then the teachers, I feel, still did what was easiest which was not to challenge my child on the difficult items. I never received any feedback from the teachers directly. Unless I asked my child, I did not know what they were working on at any given time. Alex was always available to discuss my child, which was great. He was professional at all times. The front office person was also always pleasant. I think this program does work for the many who reviewed GradePower with high marks. I also think a student who is eager for additional support, may benefit from this program. Unfortunately for us, overall it was a negative experience. As a last comment: I was also disappointed that GradePower continued to require masks after all mandates at businesses and schools had dropped this requirement. When asked about a timeline for them to be "optional", the response was that it would be a very long time. Alex said if it was up to him, they would never come off.

The stability and structure of the school gives my boys great comfort. The teachers are consistent, loving, and work very hard in the classroom to help each child. What have we accomplished with this school? - My 5-year-old is reading. Very well. He is also a proficient writer, budding speller, and excelling in math. His social skills have had a chance to flourish and he enjoys helping kids younger than him learn things he has already mastered. - My 3-year-old is becoming a writer, mastering letter sounds, learning practical life skills, working on social skills, and making friends. - Personally, I feel that I have been given tools to help my kids at home through meaningful conferences, I have made friends (difficult after a big move), back up and support for any of my kids' challenging behaviors, and peace of mind that that are in a loving environment during the school day. This is a school, not a daycare, so if you are looking for flexible hours, flexible tuition, or zero responsibility on your end this is not the place for you. It is a collaborative effort between home and school. That being said, the teaching staff/ owner have gone above and beyond for my kids more than once. We are in our second year here (Kindergarten year and 2nd-year Montessori) and we will keep attending for the foreseeable future. Maple Tree felt right from the second we went to visit. We looked at about a dozen montessori preschools and there wasn't a better one. We looked in Glen Ellyn, Downers, Lombard... The school itself is adorable. It is quiet and peaceful and clean. The student/teacher ratio is very low. We were made to feel very welcome from the first day. The directress Jean Gottlieb is such a sweet and caring woman. She clearly loves children and understands child developement. She has been willing to answer questions, give advice and simply listen to parenting and educational concerns. The school has organic lunch catered in for the children, with vegetarian options, and prides itself on being earth friendy and passing those values on to the children. They are nut free and don't allow sugary snacks...this is a huge change from what we were used to, but I love it! All this and we can already see learning in leaps and bounds. Our daughter has started reading and understanding concepts in math that she wasn't before. We are thrilled to have found Maple Tree. If only we could have been there from the beginning!

The transition (to his new school) has been challenging. Joseph is extremely intelligent, altho he's a left brain thinker. His brain filters and processes information from left to right. He performs exceedingly well in math, in some aspects, but struggles with math concepts presented in traditional school. He's an unbelievable narrative and conceptual thinker. Although he struggles, which is an understatement, with numbers transposition, letter transposition, phonics and short-term memory. His long term memory goes back to the womb. She certainly did not discern from the credentials in my email that newspaper folks write and interview with our noses - or least she doesn't care.
